Michael Sam Becomes The First Openly Gay Player Drafted by the NFL

A roster spot is too valuable in the NFL to use it on someone who has no chance of playing. If things don't work out with the Rams he'll either get cut and go to another team or maybe end up on the Rams practice squad.

Will he be able to sign with another team as soon as he gets cut? What are his chances to get playing time on another team?

As I said in the other thread: Grats but he would have been better off not getting drafted IMO. The Rams have a very good defensive line, I really don't see him making the team. If he was undrafted he would have been able to choose which team to try out for, thus allowing him to find a better fit.

So if he won't get a spot on the Rams will they release him or will he just "rot" on their bench?

Most late round guys dont end up starting anyway.

He is lucky in the sense that he plays defensive end. If he ends up making the team despite the challenge that it will be, he will have the opportunity to rotate into games which is increasingly common with defensive lines in the NFL.

NFL teams are relegated to 53 spots during the active season so they would not waste one on a player who doesnt play or doesnt play a key backup position.

Like I said, if he doesnt make the team there is a very good chance he will make a practice squad or the roster of another team.

He wasn't going to start for any team, though (which is why it doesn't matter that the Rams D-linemen are already good). Not getting drafted would have been better for him being able to choose a team (for whatever reason he wanted to), but no matter where he went he was going to be a situational pass rusher at best.

He won't be a lineman in the pros anyway, they'll convert him to outside linebacker.

He's too slow to be a linebacker, can't play standing up. At least based on what I saw at the combine.

He's not going to make the Rams' roster, that's my point. Their line is solid and they'll have backups and situational players who make the cut over him. Whereas as a UDFA he could have found a team that had room for him, like the Detroit Lions perhaps.

aight, thanks for the infos everybody.

Congratulations to him. He's got a tough road ahead of him in terms of making the team but it's a great day for progress. Big ups to the Rams for making it possible.

It's fantastic he got drafted but its worrying to me, how the story for some people is about how he got drafted late for being gay instead of just not being that good.

It's only a small step in the right direction but until a gay player can go into the draft with out all the publicity and headlines that he's gay while it being public knowledge, and with out the NFL being in fear of a gay player being undrafted can we say that there has been some real change.

And he's too small to be a lineman. This is his dilemma. He'd probably work best as an edge-rushing linebacker in a 3-4. Gregg Williams mixed some 3-4 in with the base 4-3 when he was in charge of the Saints. If he does the same in St. Louis, then Sam might have a use.

I don't follow the Rams that much, but while their starters are pretty good, I've never seen anything about their backups/rotational players being that great. Teams like Seattle and San Francisco, you'll hear all the time about the depth they have along the line, but I don't hear that talk about St. Louis.

So the NFL is so progressive that being gay didn't make him the first SEC Defensive Player of the Year to go undrafted?

Will he actually make the team?

So proud of my Rams.

But he's going to have to win a roster spot on one of the best defensive fronts in football. Hope he can play special teams.

The worst player he'll have to beat out for a spot is probably Eugene Sims. Sims is the backup to Robert Quinn, the best DE in football.

That's what I was thinking, with some of these later picks they might just be making that stellar special teams even better. Tavon TD every time.

Eh, not likely. But you never know! Maybe he will improve because he did not look very good at the combine.

Nice. I didn't even think about it like that yet. Would be great to see Sam level someone and spring Tavon for a TD.

Did you watch the way his boyfriend caressed his bicep while on the phone?

Not gonna lie, that was pretty hot...

Yes!

That's probably the point where the old, conservative producer entered the control room and tried to pull out some wires. And then all the gay production assistants tackled him and dragged him out into the hall.

Or, it was just a weak signal from the remote location...

Actually after thinking about it, the Rams will find a spot for him and attempt to exploit his sexuality, and the fact he played college ball in Missouri, to sell tickets because there's more people standing in line at Ted Drewes down the street than there is at the Edward Jones dome on any given Sunday.

There are 57,000 people at Ted Drewes on Sunday?

And way to be cynical. Maybe the Rams identified a good value at that pick and pulled the trigger.

He has to be amazing value in the 7th. The day he came out I read articles of him going in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th round. After the combine he dropped to 6th-Undrafted.

He is the lowest drafted SEC DPLOY in history. Shouldn't have been the case.

looks exactly like him

St. Louis has had a good front seven for a few seasons now. The rest of the team is bad though, so they don't get much spotlight.

Hard to say. Will be difficult, but wouldn't be a craziest thing ever if he can find a niche.

I would think dumping Sam Bustford and their garbage OC for some people that can actually put points on the board would be a much easier way to sell tickets.

Does ESPN normally show hetero players kissing their girlfriends in this kind of situation? Or did they make an exception to showcase a completely normal attribute about his life?

Can't he still choose a team if/when he gets cut? The NFL would have been skewered if he didn't get drafted

They usually show player reactions to being drafted, yes. They don't have cameras at all 200+ players' houses, but the guys who were stars in college or are expected to be drafted highly will all have cameras.

The players will all have family/friends over for a party at someone's house and they all go nuts when the player gets the phone call from the team.

Yeah, it's normal for ESPN to show a drafted player kissing his girlfriend. Don't see it too often in the 7th round though.

ESPN will do or talk up anything that they think will get them ratings. Being an Eagles fan, I still have nightmares of the T.O. era, mostly because I used to watch ESPN so much. lol

They haven't shown it since Sam's after it first aired, but athletes kissing people is a pretty common occurrences on draft night. Look up Jan Vesely (probably the only reason anyone knows his name).

Cmon man, they fucking black out the games in St. Louis. Lol. When Green Bay comes and plays here its a home game for them because their fans outnumber the St. Louis fans.

This is true. :( There has been rumors for years that they want to move the team back to L.A.. Don't know if it will ever happen though.

There's been talk about expanding to Europe as well. If they do, the Rams are as good as gone. Kroenke already tried to give Europe two home games.

Well now you've proven you don't know what you're talking about. There hasn't been a blackout in at least 5 years.

I'm a season ticket holder. I go to every game. Sure there are empty seats, but there are a whole hell of a lot more filled ones.

There has never been a rumor the team wants to go to L.A.

L.A. wants a team and the Rams could move. But owner Stan Kroenke (Missouri native) only became an investor with the condition the team move here, and has said in recent years "I've stood up for football in St. Louis before and will continue to do so."

When I said "they" I meant the sports media, not the Rams, sorry.

Drink that Kool Aid man. Tell me how many games have been announced as blacked out only to have the NFL or the Rams buy the tickets back at the last second. It happens almost every home game. It's just a technicality you're arguing. No one goes to the games because everyone that's in a position to guide the team fucking sucks and no one wants to pay to see bullshit year after year anymore.

I know their front 7 is good (I'm a Bears fan, so I saw them play this year), what I meant is that they're known as being good because their starters are very good, and not necessarily because they have a lot of depth at those positions.
