Somewhere in a town near you a secretly gay teen athlete saw Michael Sam and his boyfriend on TV and decided to stick around for awhile.

THIS is why everyone who wants to parade just how progressive and accepting they think they are by saying "So? this shouldn't be a big deal" just needs to stop talking for awhile.

This matters to a lot of people. And so it should.

Well, I heard the news he got drafted and great for him, but the kissing is incredibly unnecessary. Unprofessional even (in a league that gravely needs their players to act in a professional manner).

Normally you see these drafted guys hugging their families and friends and thats what he should have done. You can't be drawing attention like this because any controversy is bad PR regardless of what it is. I am almost at a loss that nobody gave him sound PR advice for getting drafted or simply ignored it.

Hug your mom/dad, be humble, say kind words about people who helped you, promise to put your best foot forward for the team who drafted you. Thats what he should have done. Every professional athlete does this. I don't see any reason for him to have do differently simply because he is openly gay and the first to be drafted (especially since he is the first one). Being gay has nothing to do on weather or not you can play the game.

The NHL has a way better support with their "If you can play, you can play" initiative. I fully support that and contributed to that initiative.

He shouldn't be kissing his SO because...why? Lots of players give their gf a kiss after getting drafted

This is fucking BS. Kissing is a basic human response when someone you love managed to achieve something. No one would have bat an eyelid if he was kissing a girl. But God forbid he kiss a guy. Get over it! They were at home and they can do whatever they want.

Actually fuck that. Kissing should be seen as normal whether it's a guy/girl, guy/guy, girl/girl.

What? Did you watch drafts. Usually first thing they do is kiss their so and hug their mom

Let me put it this way, if you didn't have a problem with the cameras constantly navel gazing Kathryn Webb just because she's the wife of AJ McCarron, you shouldn't have a problem with Michael Sam and his boyfriend kissing on screen.

Derrick Ward as well

I'm sorry but that Michael Sam is no bueno for doing that on national tv. I'm fine with it being a new day in age but for him to do that on National tv is disgusting. Gay or not.
Man U got little kids lookin at the draft. I can't believe ESPN even allowed that to happen.
Everyone who comments on my page saying what dude did was fine is getting blocked. So far I've blocked 10 people

My favorite one

But for real though most of u need to read the bible. It'll explain a lot in that book. #knowledge

Yep, Derrick Ward's using the ol cliche 'I-I-I Would have said it if it was a woman too!' Then he says people should read the bible. lol sure you would have said something.

I'm disappointed he was drafted so low because with his talent he should've been in the top 20 somewhere but congrats to him.

Top 20? Everything I've read said that people thought he'd go in one of the middle rounds before he came out and before his bad combine.

The bible clearly states not to kiss women in public. Read up man. #knowledge

I don't remember any controversy when the commissioner kissed a player at the draft either.

Jesus Christ the world can be terrifying....

He was projected mid round due to size and speed, then had a disastrous combine. Frankly, he was lucky he was drafted at all. He was never, ever, ever going in the first round.

Congrats on him getting drafted but from what I understand he's going to have a hard time staying on the team with that defensive line. Maybe he will drop weight and move to linebacker.

I think my favorite part of the Bible is where Jesus tells his disciples, "Don't kiss men, ever. Seriously you guys, kids could be watching. And besides, beards are hella scratchy."

#knowledge

No lie, a Jehovah's Witness friend of my grandmother's told me that homosexuality was wrong because Judas showed the roman soldiers who Jesus was by kissing him. So now men kissing each other is a sin.

srsly

What the hell are you talking about? He was never a 1st or 2nd round pick. He performed bad in the combine which put him in an even lower position.

New gm and we still have this kind of shit going on. Way to go dolphins.

Dolphins getting an early start. I wonder how many dollars their collective controversies brought in. "NO NO! We're not prejudiced against gay people, this is all just a slow burning marketing tactic. Come week 3, you'll be thanking me!"

I'm amazed that one of the clauses for the dolphin's contract this year isn't banning them from all social media.

Also, about the news, legit surprised. It'll be a lot more interesting if he actually makes the team but I didn't expect this level of progress from the NFL. I guess all we can do is see how this plays out going forward.

People are fucking hypocrites. If Derek Carr had kissed his wife 4 or 5 times after being drafted, at worst it would be a running joke, and not something people have to "explain to their kids". Listening to talk radio this morning that's all I hear "My kids were watching how am I supposed to explain that to them?" and all I could think about was that Louis CK bit:

I think the point should be made that Sam pretty much only had is boyfriend to celebrate with. No real family was with him. That kiss stood as it was probably most affectionate of the night where most players hugged friends and family. But if you had another setting where it was just a draft and his wife or girlfriend I think it would have been just as affectionate.

I hate to get into the TMZ aspect of it, but what was with that? I thought I read his parents were supportive.

The Rams need severe special teams tackling help. If he can find some fast shoes he'll get on that set.

Not sure about his mom but is father was not supportive of him coming out and actually made it known to a newspaper that his lifestyle is not something he agrees with.

He doesn't have anywhere near the speed or agility to play LB. Every half decent TE in the league would destroy him in coverage. His future is as a situational pass rusher at best. With his motor he should have a future as a special team/practice squad guy though.

Thought this was pretty neat:

Michael Sam Jerseys Outselling Those of NFL’s Top Pick

Orders for the jersey of the NFL’s first openly-gay player topped those for No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney this weekend, according to the NFL.

Michael Sam’s St. Louis Rams jersey was the second-best selling jersey on NFL.com, trailing only Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel. Sam was selected in the seventh-round of the draft with the 249th overall choice.

“This is unprecedented for a Day 3 pick, let alone a seventh round pick, to crack the top five rookies sold following Draft weekend,” NFL spokesperson Joanna Hunter told Outsports.com.

The defensive end out of Missouri will attempt to earn his way onto the team’s roster for Week 1 of the NFL season.

I don't know shit about NFL draft, but how he picked that low with DPOY achievement? wut.

Is his statement have that much of effect?

It was DPOTY for one conference. Hell, there have been Heisman trophy winners go completely undrafted.

If anything, his coming out might have helped him get selected for the attention and good buzz it would bring the team. Jackson Jeffcoat is an extremely similar player (with a better NFL frame too, like Sam, he needs to bulk up) and had arguably a better college career and went undrafted.

I'm happy for him that he got drafted, I hope it's inspiration and motivation for others in the position he was in. I don't know what kind of success he can have on the Rams though, they are stacked and in a position where they will need to play great in that division at all times and I don't imagine them being very dominant. He might have been better off going undrafted. Comparing him to Jeffcoat again, he went undrafted and got to pick his team and he picked the defending champion Seahawks. They also have a great line, but they rotate a ton and are ahead in many games and he can get some play time there. Sam will probably be a ST player if he makes the team.

It's, literally, the only question regarding this whole thing that people are, for some reason, treating with any sort of validity.
He was bitching to cowheard and said he had to lie and told his kids they were family. This is after he clarified he's a "progressive".

I don't understand the difficulty. Just say, "sometimes boys like boys and girls like girls and that's ok if they do"

I wish his combine had been stronger. I think it gave teams an excuse to pass on him to avoid the (real and imagined) baggage that would come with him. Oh well, he's still got his shot and I hope things work out for him.

Is there a team called Panthers? I liked them more..

Welcome to the team, Panthers-bro.
