New DriveClub gameplay videos (IGN)

sorry for the bump, i hope we'll get it today...

If a game is outputting at 1080p, you set the capture device to the desired output format then basically play and upload. I can't stress how confusing it is for me to see them suggesting there's some arcane process to getting the ideal blend of spices for their capture. If they're doing post-processing, that's not in the spirit of a gameplay video. This is promotion for a multi-million dollar release. I'd rather it not become a narrative about how the people behind it haven't been able to provide promised content for a waiting audience of potential buyers.
It is not about hitting record and playing the game.

If they did that you'd end up with ridiculous file size.

Not everyone has Google Fib(re|er). They need to get the right balance of video bitrate and audio bitrate to both do the game justice and be easily streamable for the masses.

It might be Sony said 'no, it is too big (that's what she said)' and they're adjusting accordingly.

They uploaded a reasonably decent quality version of the re-reveal trailer to mediafire a few days ago... I don't see why they can't do that again. I mean how many times do you have to re-encode something to get it right? There are high quality presets in all the popular video editing software packages that would be suitable. They are either trolling, or very busy doing more important things.

I genuinely believe they know that it looks Jaggy etc, and will get ripped apart. So they are just hoping people forget about the videos.

This can't be the same footage. It has to be something completely different because if it was the same footage from ign, youtube etc. it would have already come from a high quality source.

Edit: if the above statement is true then all they would need to do is upload said video. But no, they must be putting together something else.

Or it could be that everyone is crunching.

it didn;t look jaggy in the direct feed footage from before the delay. they'd changed the AA solution and it looked silky smooth, same for the channel 4 clips they released around the launch of the PS4. i don't see why it would suddenly be a jaggy mess?

Maybe those weren't really real-time? I don't know what other direct feed you're talking about, but it would be no surprise if the Channel 4 ads were cleaned up. They certainly weren't raw gameplay in any case (with variable DoF playing out more like a cinematic).

Would you like to expand on that? In the IGN video Rushy said "Evolution believe they have made the most beautiful driving game available", so what do you mean by ripped apart for "etc"?

It's not nearly as hard as you're making it sound. Assuming they do things properly, the initial capture is done to a lossless format, whether that's DPX, HuffYUV, lossless x264, whatever. This is your master or archive copy.

Then, all they need to do is encode a compressed version at the desired quality setting. I'll even write the commands for them to feed into the free and open source x264 utility:

Retail Blu-ray disc quality and compatibility:
Code:
x264 --bluray-compat --bitrate X --preset veryslow --weightp 0 --bframes 3 --nal-hrd vbr --vbv-maxrate 40000 \
    --vbv-bufsize 30000 --level 4.1 --keyint X --b-pyramid strict --slices 4 --fake-interlaced \
    --aud --colorprim "bt709" --transfer "bt709" --colormatrix "bt709" --sar 1:1 \
    --pass 1 -o output.file input.file

Smaller but still high quality and better for web distribution:
Code:
x264.exe --level 4.1 --crf 18 --ref 4 --me umh

See? Pretty damn easy.

If it looks jaggy, just release it and say 'we know it looks jaggy, we haven't put in our AA on this build yet' - like they did last year. It's several months off, it is reasonable for them to not have final tweaks in yet

I think it wont be easy to get rid of the jaggies we saw on the last videos.
My bet is that we are gonna see them on the final release.

Plus the night footage they released of Chile before was pretty clean except for aliasing on the car.

So a heads up, IGN Finally has 1080p downloads available on the site for the videos. Not gamersyde quality by anymeans but better than the youtube versions at least.

Size comparison:

Driving By Your Headlights - Youtube - 95.6MB
Driving By Your Headlights - IGN - 133MB

Racing From Dusk Till Dark -Youtube - 82.8MB
Racing From Dusk Till Dark - IGN - 101MB

You need IGN Prime to download these?

Yep, these vids aren't going on DCs website, if IGN want you to pay to access, that guy on Twitter spoke out of turn.

Yeah, the DC uploads are gonna be downloadable for everyone, this was just IGN being slow to put up the 1080p version on their site, they had the 720p version there for the longest time, leading people to speculate that they captured at 720p and upscaled it to 1080p for the youtube videos.

Also, I found some alternative mediafire links to the IGN version of the videos not touched by youtube, but not sure if it's against the rules to post em here.

They know a lot of people just want to see the high res vids so they can biyptch about jaggies, yes.
Having said that, i do hope the game will look as clean as the earlier vid.
Looks Great. Can't wait to try it.

Also, My first post. looking forward to be a part of this awesome community :)
Welcome.

Welcome! I recommend finding a chair, since you'll be doing a lot of waiting in here.

You've been able to grab those files from the first day they've been uploaded to IGN. Well, if you knew how :P

I think that after seeing some of the responses, mine included, that I could see jaggies even on the horribly compressed footage. I havea feeling that they know what the internet is like. If they release direct footage that the game will be examined with a fine tooth comb, Like everything nowadays.

there's lots of great things in the source :)

all you need to do is find the source .mp4
then search for 1920, replace the data-width
then change the data-id

here, just take them. It's not like they're hiding them. They're terrible quality anyways.

These companies really need to create they own portal for new game footage, as youtube and the like do nothing but harm their game's visuals.

Hah
Pretty pointless for IGN to stream the video in fragments if they have the entire video's path in the source.
