It might unless they create a fake scarcity. Then people would buy the 'nfc dlc' just because it's rare, not because they actually want it.

To be honest, I never buy costume dlc for any game. I love smash bros enough that i'd likely buy all of it. I'll buy it no matter how they sell it to me.
I still think the game will use NFC, i'm just not sure for what. My current idea is that it's the way you'll transfer your 'custom moveset' from game to game (either 3ds to wii u, or your wii u game to a friend's wii u game). If it unlocks extra trophies, too, that's a bonus. Make it a fun, but unnecessary addition.
No reason they can't do both.
Think of it like having both digital and physical DLC, just like you have digital and physical versions of games. If digital, you download it from the eshop and it's usable on your own console exclusively. If physical, you can use it wherever you want if you carry the NFC figure along.
Best part would be if they're the same price, lol.
3.99 for costume dlc, 3.99 for nfc w/ dlc. People would flip their shit, lol.

I believe a total of 6 colors will be back in SSB4. Villager #1 and Villager #6 Felt that was a sign to that exactly.
This is the first time that we've seen alternate colors! ^^ And I believe there will be 3 different hair styles within the 6 colors. 2 of each, just as the Female Villager in the picture is using the same hairstyle. ... Or we have 3 of the same hair within 2 hairstyles.
I just felt like saying stuff. Lol.

No way Paper Mario would be an alt. If anything, it'll be a unique character.
Its pointless if the DLC exists.
Then you are buying a figure of a character. Something nintendo already sells, though multiple distributors for various prices way higher than that of a NFC figure.
Just do dlc, because they already sell physical items, and to add that too smash would be unnecessary complications to a system that does not need to be complicated and already makes nintendo money.
Pay your money, and buy your costumes. If you wanna toon link go they site and order a figure.

I don't know if it's been pointed out already, but the male and female Villagers are wearing the same bottoms, it's just the shirts / faces / heads that have been changed. So maybe there's only one "alt" (Female ver.), but both have a few colors that radically change the design like that?

Yes please! For guys like Yoshi, this would be the absolute best option. Dk's uniform is pretty awesome as well and I want it! Sakurai could really make it complete with the pissed as all hell expression that goes with it.

That's not how it works. Paper Mario would need a completely unique animation set, he can't just be a Mario costume. He could make it as a separate character, but a costume is pretty much impossible, since it'd be basically creating a full 2nd set of animations for Mario. his proportions are also different, so the hitboxes wouldn't match or he'd look very odd anyway...
Wireframe Mac also was originally bigger than Little Mac. That's why "Little Mac" was even created in the first place, because the original boxer was too big to be a NES sprite alongside his opponents, and his size became a defining characteristic. Yet, Smash Bros is ignoring the Wireframe boxer's original size here.
I think it'd be 4 to 6 colors per gender, otherwise you wouldn't be able to choose the Villager's gender in team matches.

Correct. On NES the only way to tell you got a suit upgrade was a palette swap. Metroid 2 was black and white, so it had to make shoulders bigger to indicate the suit upgrade. Both color change and shoulder size were added in all future metroids.

Exactly. Let's say they make a Dr. Mario alternate costume with six different palettes available as digital DLC for $2.99. You can buy it there, or alternately you can buy a little Dr. Mario trophy (exactly as it would appear ingame, trophy base and everything) for $5.99 that comes with the DLC in the form of an install for one Wii U (so permanent on that single Wii U) or a temporary install for any number of other Wii Us as long as you scan the figurine at the character select screen.
It would be a neat alternative that is definitely not mandatory. I know I personally would love to have some physical SSB collectables that come with DLC...

F.L.U.D.D. is pretty cool. It should be more thoroughly integrated though. Make it act somewhat like Jet Kirby from Super Star and Super Star Ultra.
