Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

If you count all the other threads besides these mega threads, I think there's already more threads than there will be characters. There's around 60 threads right now by my count

I assume there would be a general bump in thread speed around E3, so we'd at least have double digits.

smaller than Melee's starting roster confirmed

Smash bros direct gave us about 100+ pages or so, I imagine E3 might give us 150-200. If we make double digits by 3DS release, i'll be surprised.

Trophy and assist trophy threads don't count! :p

I’m bored, so I have some newcomer trivia/factoids. Most of this is probably obvious, but I’m trying to hype myself up as much as possible until E3.

  • Even though Sakurai ruled the Villager out in Brawl for being too peaceful, he joked in a 2008 issue of Famitsu that a potential Animal Crossing character could fight with a shovel and a net. Villager, of course, uses both of those tools this time around.
  • The Punch-Out!! series emblem is taken from the title and victory screens of Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!
Didn't realize either of these, that's really cool! I thought Little Mac's emblem made sense in the first place, but that's cool to see that its basically directly from the NES game. And I guess that means that if Ridley makes it in, he really is going to be really slow.

We'll probably be a decent way through 8 by the time E3 happens, get another full thread from that, and then we'll have in-depth previews, game play videos, and eventually reviews all before the game finally comes out. I'd imagine that tiny stuff like examining how character's standard moves and costume colors have changed alone might be enough to at least get us started on Thread 10. Right before release is when the hype should really ramp up, even if literally everything is revealed at E3 like MK8, because then we can still do game play analysis.

Is that the same article? Lol. Anyone mind posting it in full?

Here's what Sakurai said in Famitsu:
What also proved troublesome was that in determining which characters to include from the GameCube, there were few choices. Looking back even now, there are surprisingly few titles which had a significant impact…

Other than Pikmin, Animal Crossing was also considered, but having an Animal Crossing character fight would stray too far from that series’ image. I suppose it would have been possible to make a character who uses a net and shovel (laughs).

Sorry if this has been asked before, but do you all expect a limited edition Smash Wii U? I don't have one yet, but I'm planning to get one, and I'm not sure whether to hold off for a sweet Smash Bros. themed one, or if I should just go ahead and buy one now.

That's interesting. Roy's case was weird. A character just to promote the game I guess.

Actually, Sakurai first wanted to put in somebody else as Marth's clone (it was either Leaf or Sigurd, I don't remember exactly). When he approached Intelligent Systems about the second character, they suggested Roy instead and gave him a look at the upcoming FE game, and Sakurai agreed that he would be a better fit, partly because the fire properties made him stand out more.

Promoting the new FE game surely was one motive behind his inclusion, but I don't think he was there "just to promote the game".

Well if the Wii U is still selling horribly when Smash on Wii U releases, then there could be one.

I would say probably not. The closest I'd expect is a bundle, and the Mario Kart bundle doesn't do anything fancy except give a red controller.

Here's what Sakurai said in Famitsu:

That significant impact portion really intrigues me as I had forgotten he even said that. It makes me think twice about Golden Sun and Sin and Punishment having reps. Makes me wonder about Joy Mech Fight and how it was received way back when in Japan.

Also whether or not the Ridley topic is legitimately over blown or not I'm just glad it's such a big topic in the Smash community. The constant bickering amongst the super hard core on either side can only mean good things some day. Ridley has made his own significant impact.

Ragnorok, excellent gif as usual! [laughs]

Sakurai is surely not that kind of person, so that sounded weird. I guess that's how it happened but still Roy was a weird addition.

Damn it, I need my Lucina already.

So how do you guys feel about Snake coming back? The talk about characteristics of his moves being put into other places (Sheik taking his grenade, steel diver replacing the nikita, Villager having his up smash, etc.) was starting to worry me, but I won't buy into all of that until we see moves that potentially work like his final smash, mine, and C4.

It's a little tough to say, but if I had to put money down right now one way or the other I'd still say he's returning. Various interviews with Sakurai make it seem like he really enjoyed the third-party inclusions in Brawl and Nintendo didn't mind either, and when you're dealing with such a popular character who had such a unique moveset I have trouble understanding why he wouldn't return or where the deal would fall apart. Kojima's said he wants him, Sakurai doesn't have any reason not to want him, and since MGS3D was only a couple years ago I don't think Nintendo has a reason to be upset with his inclusion either. I don't really get which party involved would object to his return.

Yeah, something on par with mario kart (game, system, maybe extra pro controller), only it includes some NFC figures for smash! :p

If you're lucky, it'll be like wind waker HD, where the gamepad has smash bros stuff on it. We also don't know what other Wii U games will be out this holiday, so we don't know what bundles it has to compete with (other than mario kart).

Yes, it was going to be Leaf but they decided to go with Roy.

I'd honestly be shocked if he came back. I don't know anything about his moves going to other characters, but that's way too many third parties, which Sakurai has seemed resistant to in the past. Sonic, Mega Man, Pacman, and Snake? That's a lot.

What are your E3 Plans everyone? Anyone going to try to go to best buy?

For me:
  1. Taking off work
  2. Waking up at 9 am EST
  3. Showering
  4. Going to Dunkin Donuts for some Ice Coffee and some smash balls (donut holes)
  5. Waiting on GAF (if it's up) for Noon EST
  6. Watching E3 Direct
  7. Eat lunch (no plans yet)
  8. Watching Treehouse/Tournaments (whenever they are)
  9. Eat small dinner
  10. *PRAYING* for a livestream of the roundtable, if not, i'll probably check gonintendo's liveblog (he tends to be the most verbose, in past years)
  11. Doing the same for the 3DS roundtable
  12. Going to bed, as it'll be 11:30 pm EST by the time it's all done.

I found out before that my boss had to change some of my vacation days this summer, so I can actually follow E3 on GAF in real time.

Keep telling yourself that, pretend there won't be 504.

Congratulations though! I got the days off too. Can't wait.

I'm wondering what RagnarokX is going to do when Ridley gets confirmed for the game as a stage hazard. No more gifs to look forward to when we get "meh" POTDs.

Also, 3 weeks! This month has gone fast already. I cannot wait. I'm going to bounce off the wall I'm sure.

The camera zooms out to reveal the whole GIFs were part of a "Space Pirate Cruiser" 3DS stage?

It'll be ridley starting back at ridley, doing the disappoint eye to ridley while ridley disappoints that ridley disappoints.

I have classes. So I could either avoid twitter and gaf until I get home or look at twitter every 5 minutes.
