Nintendo invites fans to the Super Smash Bros. Invitational

How many times can you say the same thing in the same thread? No one here cares.

Correction: YOU don't care. But everyone else who wants a real atmosphere at E3 do care. I don't understand that wasted opportunity, it could be such a great E3 show but instead they are doing a video for their announcements. They HAVE a stage, they HAVE a audience and they WASTE this on ONE game. Zelda U alone could make, when its good, such big emotions it would TOP the E3 2004, because there are 3000 NINTENDO FANS!

It WOULD be a goob job of Nintendo but the fact that they are not doing a live conference on such a big stage and instead promoting one game is such a mess.

It's not just one game, it's fucking Smash Bros. - what MK8 is to more casual players is Smash to the hardcore crowd. It's their biggest title if it releases this year, so they have to go all in

Besides, this is not what this thread is about and I won't derail it any further

Sooo, Do you want to see

3000 people in a huge room with 16 Tekken professional players, cosplays, and Pokken goodness and all that on the official Twitch E3 stream at 2015?!

It is still wierd to have 3000+ Nintendo fans miss the digital event because they are lining up for bands.

The event is at 9 and people will be lining up at 9:30 or am I reading it wrong?

E3 alwasy open right after the conference, so usually thousands of E3 attendees don't see the Nintendo conf

You think the room is empty when the event happens?

here=this thread, not GAF.
And it is rude to post the same thing over and over again, while the discussion is about another thing. But KEEP going, you obviously DON'T care about THAT.

Edit: better a SSB event with 3000 fans than a conference with 500 journalists.

The "real" atmosphere of E3?
Ok then. We go back to 2000 and before and the public never gets to see a single thing from the show.
That is the "real" atmosphere of E3 before it was turned into the Super Bowl halftime show.

That's what I was thinking, if they could have some giants screens with the Digital Event.

If they do that....

Damn...all those people who complained that a digital event lacks the reactions of yesteryears.. .

3000 Nintendo fans, at E3, just imagine reactions.

If Nintendo doesn't do this, and record it. just...wow

As cool as this is, I still can't help but get the feeling they're going to mess this up somehow. I hate to be a downer, but ugh.

There's going to be terrible players there. Or good players who didn't have any time with the game to actually know what they're doing. Or it'll be a timed battle with items. Or it'll have terrible commentators from the Nintendo Treehouse. Or something. There's just no way this will be as cool as it sounds.

If they pull this off though, I think it could be one of the best E3 moments ever. I'm really excited to see it. Just please, pluck your players, commentators, and rule set from the pre-established Smash community. Don't be stubborn on this.

Also, if the winner plays an extra battle against Sakurai that'd be hype as fuck.

Recall the "For Glory" mode Sakurai mentioned in the Direct?
  • Timed stock
  • No items
  • Final destination
I don't think that is one thing you need to worry about.

You think the room is empty when the event happens?

Yes, of course. The Digital Event is at 9 AM while the Tournament is at 4 PM. Just imagine if Nintendo would do the Tournament at 9 AM and the Digital Event at 15 PM they could right use the same audience and room for their big announcements, it would be 2004 all over again.

@Nibel okay, that made me laugh! But still for me, Smash Bros is just another fighting game. Its a big game for other people yes, but they should give Zelda U and X more attention.

If they do that....

Well thats what I meant. They are not use that opportunity to use that big audience and stage for their announcements, no, they just use it for one game. They just record a video

I don't understand why people get so emotional about this stuff.

You're still getting your announcements. Unless you are attending E3, I don't see why it even matters. And even then: Nintendo's still there, they are just announcing their stuff differently. It makes things easier and cheaper for everyone. Nothing goes wrong this way and the presentation goes exactly as Nintendo wants it too.

People make it seem like "emotionless" Iwata is such a bad thing, but I don't see why it is. The presenter was always the worst part anyway, and bringing third parties on stage, and live demonstrations...blech. Just give me the trailers and release dates and let me go about my day.

The Twilight Princess reveal was cool and all, but when was the last time we saw anything like that anyway? The crowd reaction really isn't that big of a deal, not enough to warrant all the other problems.

See it that way: it's like Christmas without a family. The reactions help us on how other people thinks about the announcements. The whole live thing and the stage itself with its lighting and images is already much better than Iwata standing on a white background.

And no, there were always a good audience reactions if the things were good. At E3 2011 for example, the Zelda orchestra intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0V_Wzxv_X4 or 399$ PS4 and used games for Sony. The whole atmosphere is completely different.

The informations are the same, but a live stage E3 is like a christmas dinner with your family while a recorded video only delivers informations(presents)

I always love how used games is a big deal for an E3 conference.
How lower gamers expectations must be.....

Real? Most strong crowd reactions at gaming conferences come from paid employees..with canned laughter/applause piped in on occasion.

It's rarely any more "real" than an infomercial.

No, no and no

I'll do this once and hopefully never again; I'll put this down for you and other irrational Nintendo fans to understand the current situation (not implying that you are irrational but that you seem do miss a few details):

Nintendo fucked up big time with the Wii U - big time. Underpowered, unpopular, undeath - that's what the U is actually standing for. The system itself is alright but misses too many things for a modern console in 2014, the games are spectacular but are not enough for many people to buy a Wii U - because a console has to be so much more than just a dedicated gaming device. Too many people fear for its future, think it's too pricey, bla bla bla

And hey, guess what: Nintendo realizes this. They know that better than anyone, and why do you expect them to waste a huge amount of money on a show that many people either a) don't care about or b) use to point the finger at them? There will never be a E3 2004 period, not only because the press is glued to their tablets and laptops during the show but also because they showed the right games for the right platforms at the right time - Wii U era is just not worth it, and all that Digital Event stuff is the best considering the current situation. Everybody saying "Nintendo doesn't even show up in the battle of press conference" would also never acknowledge them doing anything good either - why waste money/energy?

I expect them to return when they have some new hardware to show, and people will give them more attention for doing a live press conference alone - so: relax and enjoy the ride, Smash tournament + Treehouse stream + Digital Event is MUCH better than what we've got last year

Used games c'mon son' and king snake is right. You are rude, complaining over and over in place where we could discuss the actual thread meaning is pretty selfish.

Shit, this is really going to be interesting. I was already planning to miss work on Tuesday to watch the stream, but now I have the option to drive into L.A. and party in the Nokia theater.

The hype man, is building fast, I really really hope they announce a newcomer at this event, like a megaton third party one, just to see the reactions live.

The most interesting part of this year's E3, for me. Should be one hell of an atmosphere, if nothing else.

Just give me the trailers and release dates and let me go about my day.

They'll be uploaded to Nintendo's Youtube account afterwards anyway. Why even bother with any sort of show? Hell, E3 could be replaced by a press release and a couple of links- presentation's clearly got nothing to do with it.

I honestly expect this to be more exciting than any e3 conference since 2006. All subsequent press conferences from all companies I've watched have been kind of disappointing. Even the 3ds announcement one didn't get me hyped- I didn't buy the console til 2013.

This is how E3 was for years, actually. And the only way we saw anything was from sanctioned recordings like GameStop use to do or leaks.
The big spectacle of a show is very recent and mostly painful outside of a couple of moments.

I can hardly think of any character announcements that would hype me at this point. They've got the good ones in already. Maybe Andy (Advance Wars) or Professor Layton

Captain Falcon

should be treated like Pokemon final four, as soon as the champ is decided, Sakurai comes out of no where to challenge the champ

but Sakurai wins though B^)

expect lots of genos :p

Because that's just a pain in the ass way of doing it. If they wanted to make one video that was literally just trailer after trailer- yeah, I'd be totally cool with that. I enjoy some Nintendo personality, when Bill or Miyamoto or whoever does a little skit and sets the stage. But that's not necessary, and if it is done it's usually much more well put together if part of one of their directs anyway.

The only positive to an E3 presentation for 99% of people is "fan reaction," and I can only recall a few times over all of these years when that's made the slightest bit of difference for me. It's usually just polite clapping. It doesn't really matter.

I think the Smash tournament is a bit different, because a positive emotional response and Fan investment is guaranteed. At E3, on the other hand...just look at their Nintendo Land reveal. The reaction just completely took the wind out of their sails. Besides TP, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and the PS4 "No Used Games" reveal, I don't remember fan reaction ever really being a benefit. Again, at least not enough to warrant all the other problems associated with the presentation. People need to get over this.

What I don't understand is how the 16 contestants were chosen. Was it through the fighting game tournament (that Nintendo forbid, then allowed) that happened last year? Was it through some Japan-only tournament (probably more likely)? What can regular people like us DO to get in to the top 16?

This is great nonetheless. It should be an exciting show. I'll be livestreaming it of course since I don't have the time nor the money to fly out to Los Angeles and stand in line for a chance to be a part of the audience.

Go back in time and play Melee competitively at a high level constantly for the last 13 years.

Wasn't that purely a time battle in For Glory? I didn't think it was Timed stock.

Yeah it hasn't been confirmed if you can do time with stocks for For Glory and that's what makes me skeptical about it being any good for people who are competitive players. Timed KO fest would be horrible for determining skill, especially with how Brawl counted KOs (if you shot a laser with Fox as someone got knocked offstage by somebody else and they die, the Fox would get the KO not the person who actually hit them off of the stage. Or even sometime after Fox hit them with the laser, if they jump off on their own it would still count as Fox's KO and not a SD -- which isn't how it worked in the previous games).

I would lose my mind if the "challenger approaching" theme played when Sakurai is introduced for a final match after someone wins the tournament.

I assume it would be 1v1 so kill stealing wouldn't be a huge deal, and SD's counting for the other player wouldn't make a big difference. I don't think that alone would be enough to ruin anything, even if it's less than ideal from a competitive standpoint. But I just worry in general about their unfamiliarity with this style of Smash. They could do bad stages, or timed battles, or items on, or Free for All, or have terrible commentators, or whatever and probably still get away with it because, hey, at least it'd still be entertaining. But if they make a habit out of doing two or more of those things...well. The tournament's kinda shot.
