Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

They're applying the Mickey Mouse's ears technique! Neato!

So...Link is both left and right in this game.
No.
explain this for my old tired self

They made unique animations for some characters so that they face towards the camera whether they are facing left or right. In previous games characters only had animations for 1 direction so when they faced the other direction their backs were turned to the camera.

And yeah, do they still punch with the right hand? Will link be both handed?

He said it was difficult so I think Link will be one handed....maybe.

Someone watch old trailers to see if this existed.

Edit:
Oh....

"Pic of the day. The leg and arm positions of some characters will automatically be mirrored when facing left or right. Mario, for example, will have his chest shown in the foreground regardless of whether he's facing right or left. This was quite a tedious task, but thanks to it we can show the best features of each character even better."

"Here's another example: in the previous games, you saw the back of Kirby's head when facing left. Now Kirby looks great from any angle."

Wow... didn't even notice! Impressive, though.

I always hated the mirroring of character sprites/poses in fighting games, so I loved that Smash didn't do that. This just feels like a huge step back.

Awesome detail, I like it. Wonder what characters won't get this detail, though.

I've noticed this ages ago when working on stuff like my size chart.

It's pretty simple, character designs that are assymetrical by nature won't get this. (minor edit: assymetry that influences their hands/weapons specifically)

This means:

1. Link
2. Marth
3. Toon Link
4. Zero Suit
5. Samus
6. Dedede

Edit: (by confirmation below)
7. Little Mac

Possibly some others like Pit/Fox, but I haven't found real evidence of this for either.

Here's another example: in the previous games, you saw the back of Kirby's head when facing left. Now Kirby looks great from any angle.

Liking Greninja's alt there, also good to know taunts will always face the player

For anyone who doesn't get it:

Here's Little Mac. It doesn't apply to him.

When he is facing right, you see this chest. When he is facing left, you see his ass. Now look at the pic of the day. You see Mario's chest facing right and left. That's what it all means.

That flat ass...

Maybe one can look through the previous pics to see when this change happened. Quick gander at the Developer Direct from E3 and they were as they were as they used to be but the more recent Smash Direct shows the mirroring. So clearly it's one of those details that no one noticed until Sakurai pointed it out.

So previously, were all the characters shown from the back when facing left?

Isn't it going to look weird if one minute you have Kirby, Mario, Bowser and Mac facing right, and then they all turn at the same time and only Mac's back is showing? Or will it not even really be noticeable?

Edit: Also, why isn't it possible for Mac to be facing backwards to the camera when facing right but forwards when facing left? (My head now hurts trying to imagine this lol). Do all other characters have to be forward when facing right but backwards when facing left?

It's been like this since last E3, it took this long for people to complain about it.

You tell me if it's noticeable.

I'm going with this.

Nobody really noticed this until it was pointed out.

Looking at the Developer Direct, I think the 3DS version had no mirroring while the Wii U version did. I'm not sure if this has changed.

I did notice that there was mirroring when I made my comparisons, but at the time I did not understand why.

For example I had to make Bowser attack to the right in this comparison because attempting to recreate the original image would have Bowser's back facing us. These pictures go all the way back to E3 2013, so I think mirroring was always part of the game, at least the Wii U version. Personally I don't think it'll be too noticeable.

Huh. Seems like it'll look good on some characters and weird on others, like Greninja.

Bowser, though. It's crazy how much better he looks than in Melee and Brawl. His old stance and run animation were just bad, I'm so glad to see those gone.

...that's...uh...really weird. Especially to apply it to some characters and not all.

Will this affect hit boxes and stuff like that?

One really stupid question because I'm not that good at imagining 3D shapes. So why is it that Mario faces the camera when fighting to the left but Little Mac doesn't? I don't mean to ask why Sakurai chose this, I mean.. can it be explained in a way that would make sense to a real life example? If two people were fighting on a stage, would one ever be facing forwards one way but backwards the other?
I feel dumb.

Ah yes, sometimes I was looking at the 3DS footage. Maybe due to his reasoning of wanting to admire them he is more concerned of the big screen version rather than the small screen version.

For Little Mac it's because he is a boxer, and he uses certain sides for attacks. Like, for a right hook, you would have to use the right fist, not the left. If he were just mirrored, then he would use the left.

Characters like Mario can just be ambidextrous. Mac is a boxer and his handedness is important. It would look bad if he changed dominant hands based on the direction he faced.

So for example Mario's meteor smash in the air can now be used by either fast depending on which side you are facing?
