basically they act like sprites being mirrored now instead of seeing their backs facing another way.explain this for my old tired self
Why would you think that?So...Link is both left and right in this game.
They're applying the Mickey Mouse's ears technique! Neato!
No.So...Link is both left and right in this game.
explain this for my old tired self
"Pic of the day. The leg and arm positions of some characters will automatically be mirrored when facing left or right. Mario, for example, will have his chest shown in the foreground regardless of whether he's facing right or left. This was quite a tedious task, but thanks to it we can show the best features of each character even better."
"Here's another example: in the previous games, you saw the back of Kirby's head when facing left. Now Kirby looks great from any angle."
Wow... didn't even notice! Impressive, though.
My head hurts trying to imagine how this works or how it used to work lol.
Wait, not being mirrored wasn't bad...was it?
Awesome detail, I like it. Wonder what characters won't get this detail, though.
Yeah it's dumbDoes anyone else not like the fact that they are mirrored now? I liked how they kept the same stance no matter what way they faced before.

That flat ass...For anyone who doesn't get it:
Here's Little Mac. It doesn't apply to him.
When he is facing right, you see this chest. When he is facing left, you see his ass. Now look at the pic of the day. You see Mario's chest facing right and left. That's what it all means.
Why doesn't it apply to Mac?
Why doesn't it apply to Mac?
So previously, were all the characters shown from the back when facing left?
Isn't it going to look weird if one minute you have Kirby, Mario, Bowser and Mac faxing right, and then they all turn at the same time and only Mac's back is showing? Or will it not even really be noticeable?

Maybe one can look through the previous pics to see when this change happened. Quick gander at the Developer Direct from E3 and they were as they were as they used to be but the more recent Smash Direct shows the mirroring. So clearly it's one of those details that no one noticed until Sakurai pointed it out.
Will this affect hit boxes and stuff like that?
Palutena right in the middle. What a troll.
Ah yes, sometimes I was looking at the 3DS footage. Maybe due to his reasoning of wanting to admire them he is more concerned of the big screen version rather than the small screen version.Looking at the Developer Direct, I think the 3DS version had no mirroring while the Wii U version did. I'm not sure if this has changed.
I did notice that there was mirroring when I made my comparisons, but at the time I did not understand why.
For example I had to make Bowser attack to the right in this comparison because attempting to recreate the original image would have Bowser's back facing us. These pictures go all the way back to E3 2013, so I think mirroring was always part of the game, at least the Wii U version. Personally I don't think it'll be too noticeable.
One really stupid question because I'm not that good at imagining 3D shapes. So why is it that Mario faces the camera when fighting to the left but Little Mac doesn't? I don't mean to ask why Sakurai chose this, I mean.. can it be explained in a way that would make sense to a real life example? If two people were fighting on a stage, would one ever be facing forwards one way but backwards the other?I feel dumb.

Villager is not mirrored.

Neither is Zero Suit Samus.

For Little Mac it's because he is a boxer, and he uses certain sides for attacks. Like, for a right hook, you would have to use the right fist, not the left. If he were just mirrored, then he would use the left.
So for example Mario's meteor smash in the air can now be used by either fast depending on which side you are facing?
I'm guessing this is because it wasn't implemented yet.
