Found the easiest one, lol.

I'm not outraged, but I'm not a huge fan of the change. I liked being able to get a good look at the backs of characters like Bowser to see his shell and stuff like that.

It's whatever though. That Greninja alt is amazing (shiny pls).

You know why mirroring also makes sense? Because the characters always face the camera in there 2D-games.

I agree, it seems to affect a lot of the cartoony sidescrolling characters; Like you'd expect.

It kinda adds an interesting flavor change/difference between the mirrored fighters and the non-mirrored ones as well.

I appreciate that they're only doing it for some characters. It was stupid in MvC3 how Spencer's bionic arm switched from the left to the right every time he turned around.

That and the fact that Smash is a 2D Arena Fighting Game.

Oh no, Smash is becoming a 2D Anime Fighter Abort. Abort. It's not Smash Bros. anymore. Ugh pre-order cancelled.
/sarcasm

Mirroring is new.

If you see the Smash Developer Direct, there's an instance in 3DS footage where Bowser stops for a second and he's not mirrored.

It is a 3D Fighting game on a 2D plane. It is more work to mirror the characters, then so simply turn them around. It would be interesting to research, if those characters change switch hand, if they carry an item.

No the fact that it's on a 2D plane still constitutes that it's a 2D Fighting game even with 3D models, much like Street Fighter and Guilty Gear. The only difference is that it's an arena fighter in that you aren't bound by the stage and falling off means a KO.

The minute Smash is on a 3D plane, it becomes a 3D fighter. 3D Fighting Games consist of Tekken, Dead or Alive, Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, etc.

I really like this, if (as it seems) it's not applied to all the characters. because it shows the dedication impemented to each model, imho.

Ah yes, i thought you tried to make a different point. Move on.

How did they handle Greninja's tongue-scarf, then? In that screenshot, it doesn't look like it changes which direction it's wrapped in, but in the old Greninja screenshots, it looks like it's wrapped in the other direction:

screen-1.jpg

Greninja magically rewraps his tongue in the opposite direction every time he changes direction. The tongue is clearly mirrored in the screenshot. It always comes out on the side opposite the camera.

I'm just making the point that Smash Bros takes inspiration and certain aspects from fighting games and that it is still considered a "fighting game", much to the chagrin of others.

Unlike the purist, Smash is unique stance that some people hold, Smash is more of a fighting game that people realize and it doesn't hurt to borrow or take more inspiration from it's fighting game roots.

Regardless, no matter what features that Sakurai and the development team adds to the gameplay or aesthetics, the core mechanics of Smash is still there and you just end up with a 2D Arena (Party) Fighting Game that is slightly different from it's predecessors, 64, Melee, and Brawl.

The Capcpom fighters mirror the models, and, if they can do it, surely Namco Bandai can.
But why do this to some characters and not all of them or none of them. That they chose to do this to some specific characters, gives it more of a point, then actually being lazy. The characters also switch the hand, which holds the item. I hope they created a small animation, which shows the characters change the holding hand. Otherwise why even bother, since it make it only look worse.

Pic of the day. The leg and arm positions of some characters will automatically be mirrored when facing left or right. Mario, for example, will have his chest shown in the foreground regardless of whether he's facing right or left. This was quite a tedious task, but thanks to it we can show the best features of each character even better.

Here's another example: in the previous games, you saw the back of Kirby's head when facing left. Now Kirby looks great from any angle.

Neat...and bowser's brown alt seriously reminds me of morton now lol.

My objection was only cause of the work, which is needed to create a character for a 2D or a 3D game. In a 2D game mirroring a character saves you time. Otherwise you have to draw all the character animation twice. One front side and one back side. You basically can create a complete new characters with the resources needed to put this much detail into an already finished one.
In 3D there is actually no need for this, since you can simply rotate the character. Even mirroring is a simple option. That's why i meant, that Smash is a "3D fighting game". Not because of its gameplay, but because of choice of technology. I simply used the term wrong at the this moment.

I'm not talking about you, I'm talking about other people.

Awesome change, I never liked looking at characters backs, especially with taunts.

Greninja's tongue is weird though, guess they decided it was minor enough to not be an issue.

That's not the case in the new screenshot, though.

Right. Both of the Greninjas on that screenshot have it wrapping clockwise, but every single screenshot on Greninja's profile page has it wrapping counter-clockwise. It's also wrapping counter-clockwise on Greninja's official render.

It's not clear if that's something that was changed in the 1 1/2 months since Greninja was revealed, or if Greninja somehow changes which direction its tongue is wrapped in.
