The film was shot in 3D so it's interesting to hear how well it worked out.

Saw it tonight. Loved it. Right up there with First Class but X2 is still my favourite.

Quicksilver was great. Needed more of him. Shitty costume aside.

The ending is to die for.
 
Just caught it.

Uneven, and focused too much on referencing and tying up the other movies rather than it's own story.

The secondary characters feel like cameos more than anything never feeling like they were needed or could have been replaced by anyone.

The plot conveniences are pretty abundant.

How would you compare it to Vaughn's First Class?
 
Just got out, first thoughts are I really enjoyed it but it had some pacing issues and the final act dragged a bit.

I also didn't like how neat the ending was. I'm sure some will disagree though.
 
Will be seeing it this weekend with the GF and her mom. Neither have really bothered with any of the X-films prior to this, so thankfully I managed to find this video - which I'll probably show them instead of forcing them to sit through 3-4 movies in preparation.

Are you sure about that ? No more convincing than 3D conversion if it's the case. Some shots are clearly made for 3D, but nothing special...

This is not a simple answer because Singer's X-men and X2 are such different beasts from Vaughn's First Class. I'll say that without bringing in feelings of preference between the two styles, DOFP is definitely a movie which is directed like X2, but shares sprinkles of the style and audaciousness of First Class, but none of its tone. The tone is all X2.
 
Saw it tonight and thought the pacing was actually really well done. The
mid way climax with Trask
was the perfect spot to slow it down a touch. Was generally very impressed with the movie - definitely surprised me as what will likely be the best comic book movie of the year.

What I didn't like was there was simply no explanation for Xavier coming back, or how he and Magneto appeared to Logan at the end of Wolverine. I thought this was going to be touched on... pretty stupid other than a 'lol Xmen 3 didn't happen'.

Seeing this with my friends tonight at 10 can't wait the X-men are my favorite superhero team and I'm so glad seeing Bryan Singer is back in true form for X-men.
 
Watched First Class last night. Completely caught the girlfriend up in preparation for tonight.

Got a big posse for the theater in Boston later.

As Sculli has pointed out, AoA will mark the return of Singer's X2 writers (Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty), so it definitely has the chance of being superior.

The best player in the whole thing is easily Patrick Stewart. J Law sucks noodles and everybody else is pretty good.

Great having John Ottman back. I immediately felt like I was right back in the Singerverse.

The script was better than I feared, there are some great nods, easter-eggs and references that aren't shoved down your throat, but this script can be very unsubtle and filled with stilted exposition/dialogue.

Remember that scene in X2 that I never shut the fuck up about? Pyro meeting Magneto on the X-Jet? That scene runs maybe half a page and tells you everything you need to know about each of the characters, Erik's charisma and how seductive he can be toward somebody like Pyro. And in that half-page, we know Pyro is being seduced. And that's all we need to see to know where it's going. It's great screenwriting because it doesn't betray any of the characters and moves the story forward in terms of each of their goals. Kinberg's idea of an arc seems to be a character stuck at point A, whilst pounding the same plea for growth throughout the entire film's runtime until they break through to B. It's less of an arc of changing degrees so much as 'This character was here and now they're here.' The script also leaves very little to subtext. Characters can very rarely understand each others motivations if they don't say them out loud to one another (the audience) again and again.

Don't get me wrong, the script has some really strong ideas and some really great plotting - it just doesn't feel nearly as organic as it should be. It also has some moments that it asks you to roll with - logical consistencies notwithstanding. But again, some of the ideas in the film that they come up with are very inventive and fun to see on screen.

Singer directs the shit out of the action scenes in this. There are going to be some very, very satisfying gifs made. The film also carries through his sense of humor from the other films.

The future is scary. That sense of dread is palpable. It's just wanted I wanted. Anybody complaining about the Future Sentinels not being menacing hasn't seen the film.

Overall, it's a really fun film that easily contains the best action of the X-films to date. It's also something that feels really satisfying if you're a fan of Singer's X-films.

You and I may not agree on all the super hero movies, but we share a common love for Singer X-Men stuff. Glad to hear the good news about this one.

the future scenes were incredible and the kudos to Jackman for standing in the background for this one

But that was already explained in X3 (in a post credit scene). Xavier transfered his mind to his comatosed brother's body.

Whoa I got scared for a spoiler for a sec, just finished X3 yesterday night and shut it off after the Mags scene (it was midnight, work in the morning). Had to go and rewatch this as for some reason I totally forgot this happened EIGHT years ago.

I am totally fine with them acting like X3 never ever happened. I don't even care at this point, the only part of that movie that I liked was "I'm the Juggernaut Bitch!!!".

Going to see this sometime this weekend, looking very forward to another Singer X-men movie. I have faith I won't be disappointed.
 
My brother just got back and said it was amazing. I won't be able to see it untill next week but as a long time X-men comic reader I'm hoping that its a significant step up from first class. What a truly awful X-men film, McAvoy and Fassbender aside.
 
The whole 'I was dead but transferred my mind in my comatose twin brother' nonsense is something you'd expect when a decision made in a previous movie has to be retconned. But Ratner actually did it in his own movie.

I don't think Singer wants us to get too specific on the details of Xavier's return. It's just too messy to waste screen time explaining.

In general terms, all we need to know (or all that we are meant to assume) is that he was able to put his consciousness into a new body after The Last Stand.

Majority of the movie just had the non Wolverine, Xavier, Magneto do awesome power displays with no character development?

Yeah.... read the reviews. A lot of the negative reviews cite the second reason as a fault.

No point in citing negative reviews as proof of your argument's validity when the film in question has received an overwhelmingly positive reception. If anything, you're just proving that your point of view is on the fringe. Talk about cherry picking...sheesh.

Actually the reviews are already down to 7.2 for all and 7.4 for top. So most of the reviews aren't positive but saying an average movie that appears better due to mediocre movies.

You know, actually reading what the reviews say which say nothing about the movie except best since X2...which isn't that hard.

Going to say the movie is going to start dropping heavily.

God damn it's good to have a review of a movie he actually cares about again. Not like Avengers where there was no enthusiasm at all leading up to the review.

Let's get this out of the way now - the quote about X-2 was the best part of the review. Even when talking about another movie the guy can't help but take up half space with how great a 10-year old movie is. Funny, if not a bit predictable.

Overall, it's a good summary of the film that highlights its strengths without leaving out the flaws and leaves this thread hyped for more.

It doesn't seem like you're interested in having a discussion about the actual merits or demerits of the movie, instead you just want to talk shit about something you haven't seen using sketchy assumptions and talking about "reviews" you've read. I have to agree. I was a big fan of the X-Men comics back in the day and other the MCU films over all other comic book movies, but to just crap on the X-Men movies and especially one you haven't seen yet is just stupid.

Huh? I am the one who is actually addressing issues with a team movie?

The fact that all the characters outside of the main four are just used as CG effects isn't a legitimate issue with the movie? That they are glorified cameos?

I know the Logan, Magneto, Xavier parts were going to be fantastic as was Trask.

That in itself should be talked about.
