I was ready to hate this movie but I cannot. It is truly great. X-Men is back. Tears of joy.
X2 > DoFP >>>>>>>> X1 = FC >>> X3 > XOW = TW
Nothing like getting out of the theater giddy thinking of all the possibilities to come. Only for making me feel like this again after 10 years, this movie was already worth it. (2 years until Apocalypse. =|).
I'm glad I watched this right after Godzilla. Nothing like an amazing movie such as DoFP to cleanse the rain of disappointing shit that other thing was.
What I write below is spoiler free as far as plot and surprises go, but it goes on more in depth about the movie. So if you want to be completely in the black, don't read it (but what are you even doing in this thread, then? =P)
JLaw was a huge mistake. Too bad we're stuck with her for the time being. No matter how hard she tries (or not tries) to put on a bad guy(girl) face, she still looks like a baby about to cry. It just makes all her scenes seem silly. I don't know if Rebecca would have been better (she was amazing saying nothing), but a good Mystique on par with Magneto/Xavier/Wolverine would have put this movie on another level.
Yes, many characters are there for special effects, but it doesn't really matter. They fulfill their roles in the movie and I consider their lack of development not a slight against it whatsoever at all. They're glorified extras to build up the main characters. Heck, I'm not sure if Blink said a word at all, but boy was she amazing. Storm has like one line, but her character has finally been made justice! The one thing I missed from the future cast having little presence is the pedantic one liners from Magneto (but it is understandable given the situation he's in). Fassbender tries, but he cannot pull it off like McKellen.
The pacing is faulty, it's been said already here and I agree. The movie gets a little boring right after the initial action. Exposition after exposition, it felt like it was never going to end. Then, gasp, comes Quicksilver to save the day and break away from the monotony. After that there's another brief down moment, but it felt like the ball started to roll again. But that's all in the first 30 minutes I think, so just the beginning.
As you see, if you want to be negative, you can dwell on all the flaws of the movie, but all the rest is so good it makes them seem irrelevant. The story makes sense. I can't think of a glaring plot hole. I don't see all the plot conveniences someone said it has (feel free to exemplify, maybe I ignored them). The characters of Charles, Magneto and Xavier are very well developed. Mystique would have been too, I mean, on paper, she's great, but JLaw (see above). The Future is well depicted, makes me want an entire movie set in it. The way they interconnect both universes is mostly well done, being the only glaring thing how Charles and Mystique relationship was rectonned, but they can't change that now until a total franchise reboot. Although, the connection has a lot of references that will probably go unnoticed to the average viewer. Future Sentinels looked good. Past Sentinels looked silly, but they were animated well. Magneto gets to be badass in both past and future, in all timelines -- forever badass. The team cooperation action in the future is great.
To conclude, I cannot (at least right now) think of a highlight from this movie, like this is the scene everyone will remember (well except for Quicksilver...). The movie is a sum of a many good little things, without anything terrible to the point it destroys the entire experience. I'm happy. It has restored my faith in Fox. I no longer desperately want Marvel to have the rights back. My opinion is biased, but I liked this better than The Winter Soldier.
I can only hope they don't the same shit again and fuck up the next one.
