Hollywood Reporter: Edgar Wright just left Ant-Man

This is really disappointing news. I like the sense of fun you get in Wright's movies and he would have been great here. Wish he was going to use the guy who choreographs all his actions scenes. Wonder what the differences were that they had to part ways so close to principal photography. No one from either party saw this coming like six months ago?

Never really liked the news that Lang was going to be the focus though.

For me, it's more a matter of being a lot more discerning regarding what hills you're going to fight on, and who you're going to engage. :)
True. It's why I post less in general nowadays. But every time I try to jump back in, someone inevitably pisses in the pool.

It's nuts that 'consumer's; and 'fans' put so much interest in box office numbers, who really gives a shit about all that

tapdance around topics like this rei. keep your sanity by avoiding sales numbers

It's not the sales numbers themselves that bother me - even I get a kick out of seeing a movie I like do well; we're all susceptible to sports team mentality - but using them as some justification for why Wright being off the project doesn't matter or why no one should care? Shit's dumb.

not much difference from the other extremists saying "they just want another marvel movie" basically shitting on every other director that's worked a marvel film just because Wright is one of their favorites. Not saying your one of them i couldn't be bothered to look back.
Oh I'm not pointing fingers at any one group of extremists. It's all stupid and it all makes me want to just wipe my hands of these threads and really, any talk of any of this shit online because the same attitudes persists no matter the topic (games, movies, comics, etc).

Have you seen any of Wright's films?

The dream is dead, people. :( I never realized how much I was anticipating this film 'till today.

Seen all of them. He's a great director and I would have loved to see his take on a superhero...but this isn't the end.

This is offtopic, but stuff like this has me thinking maybe I need to just exit "nerd culture" (as in, online discussion of games, movies, etc) altogether. I just don't enjoy talking about this stuff anymore because everything gets reduced down to some binary extremist bullshit where everyone's rushing to cape for big faceless companies. Bleh.

While i totally get what you are saying i think this

For me, it's more a matter of being a lot more discerning regarding what hills you're going to fight on, and who you're going to engage. :)

is sound advice.

I love nerding out over comic books and movies but knowing when to bail out when the discussion is getting poisoned is a skill i've only recently acquired.

Only seen Scott Pilgrim and I'd watch Cap 2, Avengers, and Iron Man over that movie any day. Granted its better than Iron Man 2 and 3 and Thor.

It does matter and people should care but this news is hours old, we no nothing of the story and we will never know what his version of this film would have been like and have no way of knowing that its automatically a turd not worth pursuing now that hes off it like a great number of people in this thread are saying.

These threads are running bags of insanity. People are also writing off the movie without knowing anything as well. Just keep calm, and bs your way through it

My over-reaction was dick-tier...and you're probably right. In all likelihood, he/she is a smarter person than me.

I think Hulk tends to babble too, but after reading an article about his personal life, it seems like his writing's lack of brevity could be from how little sleep he gets. I'm the same way when I'm tired.

I completely disagreed with your calling it "pseudo"-anything, though. He truly is able to articulate his thoughts well about many facets of filmmaking... to the point of being over-articulate. I can see where that might rub some people the wrong way, but I don't see it as grandstanding.

Same. Honestly this is the longest I've stayed in one of these threads for a while and it's mainly because I was really looking forward to Ant-Man.

Exactly. Which is why the rush to point fingers in either direction is dumb. But at the same token, if someone's only reason (or at least the main reason) for looking forward to Ant-Man was Wright's involvement, I can understand why they'd lose interest or not want to see it anymore following this news. Box office shouldn't even enter into the equation when engaging with someone like that; it doesn't matter for what they're talking about and just makes you look like a fanboy.

We are only 14% done with the 21st century so why don't we wait a few decades before we start naming names like that.

You guys are really making this guy out to be Movie Jesus when all he did was direct a bunch of British drinking movies. You guys are making me sick. Literally NOBODY is talking about Ant-Man yesterday now all of a sudden he is the fucking crown jewel to the Marvel Kingdom. As if, they have PAUL RUDD as the lead in this shitfest yeah? The only thing that would make that movie watchable is and always will be Michael Douglas.

damn dude you seem to have a stick up your ass about wright. you should stop worrying so much about what other people think. do you have nothing better to do?

If you haven't seen the Cornetto Trilogy, you really can't speak to Edgar Wright's film making chops.

His directing isn't the reason those movies are good. He is a much better writer than he is director (but even then he needs Simon Pegg to be good at that).

I still can't believe this happened. I can't wait for the tell-all book to come out in a few years, or the details of the dispute that will surely come out over the following weeks.

Ughhhhhh.....

"Marvel is zeroing in on a new filmmaker, but is not yet in negotiations with one yet, Variety can confirm."

Sounds like.... we're getting a director for hire. Yup. :(

Well, obviously. Movie could still be good! It's not yet time to post the Simpsons pig gif.

This thread in general...

It's definitely both. The writing is solid but the directing work and how he fits all the shots together is what makes them great.

The box office stuff is just one guy in one or two posts as far as i can see. People who were interested in an Ant Man film because it is an Ant Man film have every reason to call out the dozens of people calling for the film to be immediately axed imo.

Terrible news. Ant-Man was my most anticipated movie just because of Wright's involvement. Now, it's more or less off the list completely.

By the way, don't get me wrong - it can end up being good, and there's a chance I'll watch it when it comes out, but the only reason I ever cared about that movie was Wright.

MOTHERFUCKER! Wright is probably one of my favorite working directors and this was a passion project of his for yeeeaarrsss and right up his damn alley. I can't imagine anyone replacing him at this point that wouldn't be disappointing.......motherfucker.

Marvel just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about comic book film culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in other films where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in the comic book film culture, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the comic book film audience, after hearing about this, is not going to want to watch Ant-Man, nor will they watch any more of Marvel's films. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Marvel has alienated an entire market with this move.

Marvel, publicly apologize and cancel Ant-Man or you can kiss your business goodbye.

BEAUTIFUL

The word from people on the crew is Wright got booted for being REALLY behind schedule and being ineffective at righting the ship and getting it back on track. Production has been bleeding money for a month and Marvel got fed up with him and they lost their confidence in his ability to manage a production of this size.

From the thread about this on reddit. Grain of salt of course, but it's plausible.

DAMN. If this is true he's gonna have a hard time.

How does that even works? The relation between mass and force doesn't seems right.
Yeah I know is a comic book movie

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!
Even if he keeps his "normal human strength" at that size ... you should NOT be able to punch someone with that amount of force with that tiny area of impact and not slice through them.

It's like wearing brass knux ... that have a long rod sticking out that's about as wide as the head of a pin. A human "punch" would be more like stabbing at that size.
