Three games added to the list this week, as I spent some time working/revising the layout for the new monthly threads which will start next week, for June.
Anyway, on to the recaps for these three games. First up,
FRACT OSC, which was previously on hold waiting for some more impressions that it now has. It definitely seems to have more of a targeted audience than your typical game, but it's not overly long, people have very positive impressions of the integration of the music and puzzles, and the visuals of the game are a really strong point. So if you're looking for a puzzle game that is a little different, or like music focused games, definitely give this a look. It even has a studio portion to it, if you want to start making your own music from the sounds of it.
Blackwell Epiphany is next, another game previously mentioned needing more impressions no longer. Turns out to be the strongest entry of the series, which is nice since it is also the conclusion. Dave Gilbert really impresses people with the writing in the game as well. It's not a series you'd play out of order, so you'd want to pick up the Blackwell Bundle if you're interested now that the series is complete. While being a well-liked series, there's still occasionally some people with reservations about it, as the final quote above highlights. Overall though, if you like adventure games, this is one series that should be on your short-list.
The third entry is an older title, and very much a classic,
Riven: The Sequel to Myst. Perhaps the best adventure game ever made? Certainly up there either way, Riven takes Myst's formula and expands/improves it with better puzzles that are even more a part of the (better) world you're exploring, and I think there's not a single person who didn't find the game amazing. Of course, it's not exactly the gaming experience we're accustomed to these days, and you'll definitely want to avoid the temptation to look up a FAQ when stuck, because none of the puzzles are at all unfair and everything is immensely rewarding when you do solve it (spare for the occasional overlooked path/door, maybe there's a spoiler-free FAQ). That most likely means getting a notepad and a pencil, and immersing yourself in the world.
Lastly, the games that didn't make the cut (Bad Mojo Redux still needs to be checked, otherwise all caught up again):
-
The Last Federation (almost made it but not quite enough impressions)
-
Sir, You Are Being Hunted (almost made it but not quite enough impressions)
-
Chronology (didn't make the cut, not enough impressions)
-
Vertical Drop Heroes HD (didn't make the cut, not enough impressions)
-
Always Sometimes Monsters (not enough impressions, revisit in a few weeks)
-
Last Door: Collector's Edition (not enough impressions, revisit in a few weeks)
One more week until the monthly thread transition! The new OP will be a bit lighter (less scrolling) and nicer. I'm looking forward to the new monthly format now that I have things in order more or less.
