I just saw it, and sadly I was underwhelmed. Not sure what I was expecting, maybe I was over hyped based on early impressions. To me it felt like they tried to do too much, and the end result seemed like everything was spread too thin. Seemed like they invented a weird time travel storyline just so they could reunite so many different cast members, but at the same time I didn't find the story all that interesting (not sure if the story is from a comic or whatever, but regardless I wasn't a big fan). And maybe my memory is a bit off because it's been a while since I saw First Class, but I felt like Fassbender/McAvoy delivered stronger performances in that film. I felt like Fassbender was phoning it in during this one.
The Quicksilver stuff for me was the peak action wise, and unfortunately that happened pretty early in the movie, so everything after that didn't really do much for me.
I realize I'm definitely in the minority opinion on this one, but I just thought I'd give my 2 cents.
I also enjoyed Godzilla a bit more :P
.
It wasn't bad by any means, but it was more of a 7/10 type deal for me.

i thought some of the dialog between Logan and young Xavier could of been briefer or made more visually interesting. I think the script lost some of it's crispness that i thought first class had in the dialog department. JLaw seemed to be phoning it in, I thought she was great in first class but this film her acting took me out of the film completely.

They didn't say anything about Bishop story wise! i wanted more of that future shit
I want some bishop deleted scenes most of all. explain how they first came up with the premise a little more. kudos to them for fitting it all in but it would be nice to explain his role in the resistance a bit more

wow this movie was amazing! Everything I wanted it to be and it really tied up a lot of messy stuff from some of the weaker Xmen movies

2nd best movie I've seen in a long time, just a smidge behind Winter Soldier which is still my #1

Holy crap!

This and Winter Soldier make this easily the best comic movie year ever.

I cannot believe how good this movie was. I had pretty lofty expectations because aside from the drabness of the costumes I absolutely love Singer's X-Men, but it was even better than I expected. I'll likely see at least once more in theaters, but damn am I on an X-Men high right now.

I'm not eating crow. I still think it looks stupid and I have little interest in seeing it past a Redbox rental. People had super positive reactions to First Class, but it actually isn't good at all.

Bryan Singer didn't direct First Class. That's the difference. If you even remotely liked the first two movies, ask yourself what potential there could be when Singer gets a bigger budget and better tools to use. Then go watch to find out.

I'm pretty confident he got lucky with X2. He's not really a good director.

Where was
Apocalypse
during the Days of Future past storyline in the comics?

He hadn't been created yet, but I guess if you want to get technical he was sleeping. He was meant to be in hibernation for hundreds of more years waiting until the right time to wake up and conquer the world but Cable traveling back in time woke him up early in the late 80s..

So in other words, you liked X2, and that is the movie this one is being most favorably compared to, therefore FINGERS IN EARS IT CANT BE GOOD basically?

I guess if that's how you want to take it. I was one of the many quoted saying it didn't look good and I still don't think it looks good. Go look at the first few pages after Godzilla opened and people were calling it movie of the year, 9/10, and so on. Then look at reactions 2 days later.

That sounds like a very well-educated analogy. It's like when people said Mass Effect 3 was good and then it wasn't, and then when they said The Last of Us was good and it was. Shit's crazy yo!

If you don't want to go see the movie nobody is going to make you, but coming in here going "HAH! I'M NOT EATING CROW BECAUSE I CANNOT PUT MYSELF INTO A POSITION WHERE MY STATEMENT CAN BE INVALIDATED!" is pointless. Don't see it then, but your opinion on a movie that we can now all VERIFY the quality of, by seeing it, is no longer particularly relevant. We're past the phase where "I think the trailer is dumb" has any meaning in the face of a ton of "I saw it and it blew me away" posts.

I was only responding to say that because I was quoted from something at least 2-3 weeks ago, along with a bunch of other people, who were now said to be eating crow because we thought it looked bad and now people are saying it's awesome. Had I not been quoted over it, I wouldn't be popping in just to shit on it.

Be wary of noticing pacing issues on second viewing.

Still superb though.

At least watch the movie. Your speculation is a poor discussion point.

Oh, I noticed that on first viewing. The past can get a bit boring at times and I was rather frustrated with
Magneto and Mystique running around like idiots on their own and wanted the past off my screen so I can see the fate of the more interesting X-Men from the future. It's not until Magneto started lifting the stadium that the past became interesting again for me. Although by that point, the future was even more interesting so at times I kept thinking "Get me back to the FYUCAH! Fuck Magneto and fuck Mystique!"

I think that is a fair assessment the more I think about it.
Best since TDK.

Too many little niggling things in Kinberg's script to undo Begins and TDK. But Singer is still in top form.

With Dougherty and Harris back, Apocalypse ought to be one of the GOAT.

Loved the post-credits scene too, especially because
the kids in front of me had no idea who he was. "He's not part of the X-Men series!" "Must be an alien or something!"
Same here! A guy walked out after talking to his friends and
he was trying so hard to figure out who he was. The funny part is his theory was that was "the guy from after the Avengers. The thing that Loki talked to".
I just smiled. He'll figure it out soon enough.

I will see it once it is out on Redbox. If I think it is good-great after that, then I'll come back and eat crow.

Where's the fun in you eating crow in 6 months? Everyone will have moved on to other stuff, stro.

Go have your crow while it's hot so everyone can sit back in smug amusement.

I already saw one movie that I WANTED to see this month and was disappointed. Why would I want to go see a movie I don't even really want to see so I can be disappointed twice in one month?

Thought the movie was pretty good. Though I do feel pretty disappointed based on the impressions in this thread.

Future scenes were great... but really thin plot wise. Basically it's
Faces of Death: X-men edition
.

I also give them credit for using Wolverine appropriately. I did expect Wolverine 6 and I was really surprise how it all played out.

I probably missed a lot from not watching First Class, but the whole
Charles, Erick, Raven thing just dragged way to long for my liking
. DoFP gets hyped up like some long comic epic but it's just a two-part story. Felt like there was a lot of padding going on with that aspect.

I did dig all the character interactions and nods at previous movies. Definitely felt like a movie for the fans.

Great movie! The only issue with it is the pacing. But the story and the action scenes were great.

Anyone else got a chuckle out of Raven/Mystique saying "Get out of my head Charles"? It reminded me of the Juggernaut Bitch video.

I loved the movie. What an awesome ending. Why does Wolverine have
adamantium
in the future? How far into the future does it take place after The Wolverine?

Because the future is based on the events that happened in all of the previous movies. The ending is awesome.
It is great to have the whole crew back.

Yeah but at the end of The Wolverine,
Logan is recruited by the professor and Magneto because they need his help for what I assume is the events of this movie. He has bone claws at the end of The Wolverine.

I think Magneto probably stretched the adamantium to make new claws for him.

Saw it. Was pretty o.k.
Definitely one of the better comic book movies out in years.

Quicksilver scene kicked ass!

People need to resurrect the thread where people bashed the new Quicksilver & said that was one of the reasons why Marvel should get the franchise back.

This is Heath Ledger type of pwnage.

The teaser happened 2 years after the movie ended. DoFP takes place in 2020 which is several years after that scene. It's not hard to imagine that he somehow got them back during those years.

Honestly why does this bug people? He doesn't even fight in the future IIRC. I don't even know if he was in the deleted future footage.

It was definitely awesome. I still wish though we had more action and more time in the future dark timeline.

ALL OF MY YES DUDE. I wanted to know so much more about the characters from future timeline, enough of the overrated Jennifer Lawrence fanservice

It didn't bother me. I was just confused because I didn't know about that two year skip. Or maybe o forgot.

Some of my favorite scenes (probably my favorite) are the Past Prof X scenes. McAvoy was killing it. Loved him in this movie.

this movie wipes the fucking floor with first class.

I'm watching the entire X-Men series as a lead-in to Days of Future Past (excluding Origins because fuck that movie)

In X-Men: The Last Stand, it shows Xavier and Magneto circa 1990 going to meet Jean Grey for the first time. Xavier is walking and the two are still working together to find mutants.

In X-Men: First Class, Xavier gets injured and breaks up with Magneto in 1962.

I take it for DoFP, First Class takes precedent? Or was First Class a full reboot and no one told me? I thought DoFP was both a sequel to First Class and to the original series?

It is, there are some plot holes (almost entirely created by flashback type stuff from Last Stand) but it doesn't much matter. If you go with 1 + 2 + First Class, and then keep in mind the major elements of Last Stand but ignore the miniutae you'll be fine.

we don't really know what went down during the 1980s in the original timeline. a very on-again, off-again partnership/philosophical rivalry characterizes most depictions of X/Magneto throughout their lives. So far as the walking I dunno, I totally forgot about that. Does he use his powers in that scene?

Yeah, he does. He communicates with Jean telepathically. It's very much during a time when he and Magneto are still partners. They've started the school and were scouting for students. He walks and everything

Is anything from "The Wolverine" needed? I was going to watch that, too

Gotta sacrifice that one then, there's no explanation. Oh well, I wouldn't worry about it too much :D

essentially all of the events of the entire movie are meaningless except for the post credits scene which is quite light as well. Happy to spoil it if you prefer. The movie is acceptable (beats the shit out of Origins) but nothing special either.

Naw, I'll still watch it. Thanks for the help though! Will probably actually watch DoFP tomorrow, I'm really looking forward to it!

My girlfriend is interested in seeing this but has never really been into X-Men.
If we just watch First Class before this will she understand it all or will she need to watch X1-3 as well?

First Class is more important.

If she's interested in seeing the whole picture and what the OT cast did, she can check that out later.

She'll understand it all, but there will be lots of references she'll miss. Actually, watching them afterward will be pretty rewarding except for a few plot holes you'll spot in X3.
