Watch_Dogs PC performance thread [Read post #1215 before posting]

Currently on my Macbook, but hopefully this will be evidence enough of my purchase.

Anyways, after about 15 hours I've finished the main campaign (and done zero online or side missions), so that will give you an idea of average longevity (not the 30 hours purported by Morin before release). Story is pretty generic but fun enough (maybe not for the full $60/£45). Past this, take things with a pinch of pre-day-1-patch salt.

My PC's specs:
i5-4670k overclocked to 4GHz
16GB 1600MHz RAM
NVIDIA GTX 770 2GB

Graphics: The game certainly has its moments, mainly in the cutscenes - soft shadows, good AA, IQ, etc. etc. As has been said many a time, the game's best moments are during the nighttime and raining. As much as it's beating a dead horse, daytime really doesn't make the game shine, and it feels very....last gen. It's here that the PS3/360 cancer spreads through.

Pop-in is terrible. Seriously, terrible. The main offender is traffic, where Ubisoft have some standard "headlights" animation in the background, and 2 or 3 cars popping in about 30 metres away from your location. It without a doubt breaks the immersion.

Performance: When it's behaving, on my rig the game averages a very playable 40-50 FPS, going higher when looking at the sky or in low population areas, lower when driving into parts of Chicago you haven't visited in a while and more intense firefights. I've set everything on max apart from textures which are on High. High textures recommend 2GB of VRAM (Ultra recommend 3GB), but it's safe to say until Ubisoft patch in some performance, you'll need much more.

I think we can say Ubisoft have fucked up again* with some sort of memory leak, because if you play for too long, gameplay stutters down to 5fps every 20 seconds, making the game unplayable. Turning textures down to Medium sometimes fixed the issue, but you really shouldn't have to do that with a 4th Gen Intel CPU and the 3rd best gaming GPU NVIDIA released last year.

seriously, Battlefield 4 is one of the buggiest pieces of shit out there, but on that game I get a flawless 60fps on Ultra. This era of dissapointing PC ports needs to stop.

Thats not even installed...

Well its more of a pirate hunt really.
With a short drop and a sudden stop

You should raise that point with Ubisoft and other publishers/developers. It is ridiculous that paying customers are worse off than those who pirate the game.

It is likely that a similar thing would have happened if reviews weren't embargoed until release day.

The early pirate impressions actually pushed me towards the game. I don't know if I would have bought it had I not seen some of it since Ubi seemed to get sketchier the closer to release with embargoed reviews and calling anyone who broke the review liars. Then again, if whatever version is floating around is not the final product maybe the reviews are wrong. Regardless, actually seeing gamers play and enjoy the game I have no doubt that I want to buy and I am about to order through GMG.

It will be interesting to see whether the leak wasn't final and all the technical issues vanish which would be great.

Do we consider using a crack to play games before release the same as torrenting, because if it turns out you can't play the retail game till launch thats the only other way short of a review code

Exactly. I wouldn't consider that pirating though since you purchased it.

I miss the days of being able to simply install your physical copy of a game pre-release in case you happen to get it early. Now you have to wait for big brother just for you to play the legal copy you own.

A
As for Watch_Dogs, I have a physical copy coming (FedEx Tracking number in my inbox as I type) from Best Buy because I blew all my lingering Reward Zone points and I already pre-purchased the Season Pass.
Then posting proof of purchase should be fairly easy.

I must say that I probably wouldn't have purchased the game before launch if not for the performance / gameplay reviews that have come to light no doubt due to piracy. I would have waited a bit, perhaps until a price cut on Steam. That said, I am a professional and dropping $60 on a game is like buying a loaf of bread at the store. I'm not wealthy, but it's no big deal. I haven't pirated a game since I loaded Steam back in 2008. Of course, I also haven't played 45% of the games I've bought. Of course, 75 % of the 45 % of games I haven't played cost me less than $7.

Using a VPN to unlock the game early is the same thing, when it comes down to it. One way or another, you're breaking the "rules" given by publishers to play your game early.

This is something that should be brought up to publishers en-masse. I expect it's because with the advent of digital distribution, they don't want retail stores bemoaning that there are other places to buy from that release earlier.

To get back on track, the performance issues seen thus far are expected, given the situation that there usually isn't a patch for performance on multiplat releases until day of release or weeks to months later, and should be judged as such.

proof of purchase for uplay is tricky, do i need to post reciept, my driver's license, and my inked tat with my gaf handle, and a newspaper for time and date?

Yep. Especially annoying that most of the time you can't even install it from disk before release. So instead you have to install your 4 odd disks when it unlocks. Alternatively you could pre-load if possible, but that defeats the point of having the disks...

Two things.

1. That's more of a soft rule from publishers to play a game a day beforehand. If you paid for it they definitely don't want you penalized too much for it...

2. The game should be running fine currently....it had 6 extra months of dev time. A patch shouldn't be needed to make the performance good...

Installation is complete. Clicking the icon in my start menu loaded uPlay, which did nothing. From within uPlay, when I click Watch Dogs (I registered the key that came in the box earlier) I'm instructed to patch the gaming. Doing that now.

That and some releases having no preload. For some us with poor internet this blows.
Same applies on PS4 and Xbox One.

I'll just wait till I make my new PC build to play this now.

Those pics were more than enough to make me compelted forget even thinkin about a PS4 version.

Wonder if this is the same as PS4 patch... does it give a file size?

I assume that's why he said "currently on my macbook pro." Implying that he owned the game and had it installed on another computer, but was showing its existence in his library, on another computer that he had on him.

Maybe to the publisher it is the same thing because they are stupid, but ethically and morally it is nowhere near actual pirating.

the email receipt says this at the bottom for my WD purchase from uplay.

I'm just gonna say I don't like this, nothing else cuz I'll probably get burned at the stake with all the other witches.

Happy hunting! GO GET EM!

Edit: And people will probably assume this is an admittance to piracy....well all i have to say is....HAHAHAHAHA NOPE! I consider steam sales stealing, which I take full advantage of.

Put origin cant evev dl till tomorrow @9pm

I thought i remember reading earlier that it wasn't just Physical copy users who could access the game early but also anyone who got the Nvidia Key from their giveaway as they could redeem the key from uplay and then load into offline mode to play?

Might be wrong but still clear that most people here lost their receipts.
