Saw this today with the wife and its awesome that they did such a great job with this movie. Went from being hyped when I first heard about it, to easily convinced it'd suck, for the majority of the time it was being made. Captain America 2 was also a lot better than I expected. Good to go see a movie and enjoy it the whole time.

Seems meaningless, but The Wolverine's director had no idea about Days of Future Past to tweak his script accordingly. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/29/the-wolverine-credits-scene_n_3659723.html

I think what's sweet is because, also, our film -- and this was completely unintended -- because I didn't know, honestly, what "Future Past" was, or is, or anything about it until I was well halfway through shooting. And I don't think Bryan was on it until I was well into shooting the movie.

Damn i wanted to really like this movie but it's not fit to shine the boots of X2. Not only that but like X3 it kinda hurt my enjoyment of the whole franchise in a way.

I loathed everything to do with mystique in this movie, that alone brings it so far down. She was so good in the X1 and X2, now.... ugh.

That probably sounds worse than it should. I enjoyed it but it didn't come close to matching expectations for me.

Why do people like like Mystique from X1 she barely had a personality in that movie X2 is another story she finally started to seem like an actual character but all that went to shit in X3 much like everything else she also didn't really seem to have any other motive besides being deathly loyal to Eric.I think FC and DoFP have done a great job of making her feel like an actual human character instead of just Magnet's shape shifting parrot.

Heh, and it really shows too in The Wolverine's mid-credits scene, which in retrospect makes no sense.

Singer's personal explanation though was that Magneto would have rebonded Logan's metal claws.

Where did he say that? edit found it: http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=39969

Director Bryan Singer explains that Magneto's ability to manipulate metal might have something to do with it. The Master Of Magnetism could, perhaps, "reconstitute the adamantium claws... [Wolverine] has a different relationship with Magneto, and perhaps Magneto could forge them."

Thanks!

Its pretty obvious they dropped that explanation in interviews because they were never going to address it in the film. Unless theres an extended version.

Speaking of chronology stuff and what happened in between movies I think in DoFP Wolverine says to past-Mags he
spent years trying to beat him
or something like that.

Given that X1-3 happen in 2005-6 he must be talking about what followed after X3's events (2006) and before The Wolverine (~2014).

Unless I misheard what he said lol.

I haven't watched The Wolverine, what was the point in having them removed in the first place? Seems like such a weird element.
they just get chopped off by an adamantium sword. It's not like he was like "gee I really kind of like the look of the bone claws this season"

edit: they should make a videogame of the early days of the war fighting against Mark 9 sentinels or something and like halfway through wolverine is struggling against them and gets magneto to help redo the claws or something and then you have them for the rest of the game.

One unfortunate thing they ignored, though, is that according to X-2, Wolverine didn't have claws until the Weapon X program. In DoFP, though, he has bone claws. They even show Wolverine screaming in the X-2 flashback as the claws come out for the first time. It would have been nice to at least address that.

DOFP can be considered as a soft reboot. Let's just say that X1-3 never occurred.

That would kind of ignore
the point of the whole ending though.

I don't remember Logan saying he never had claws prior to Weapon X, but if he did, that's probably just another of those little continuity blips that you'd have to ignore, time travel or not. Stuff like Xavier meeting Erik when he was 17, building Cerebro together, human Beast in X2, Moira and Trask in X3, etc.

Theres a reference that Strker says "You were always an animal, I just gave you claws". You can read it both ways; that Stryker literally gave him claws, or that he bonded his claws with metal and made them razor sharp. It doesn't necessarily negate Wolverine always having bone claws. And Wolverine screaming when he sees them could have just been the pain he's enduring. He's literally covered in blood just from popping them.

I don't really see it as an error, but I see why people do.

If you want an error. Wolverine Origins is actually set in 1973 as well (as well as 1979). And thats about Wolverine fighting in Vietnam. So that whole films literally fucked lol

Human Beast was explained in DoFP, though. He just took injections to make him look human. Presumably he stopped using them between X2 and X3. Trask could theoretically be a different Trask. What's wrong with Moira, though? I don't remember her dying in First Class.

She is too young to be the same character. But you can pretend it's her daughter or something.

Absolutely loved it. It was so refreshing that the end of the movie didn't involve an entire cities destruction or shit just blowing up everywhere. Very mature filmmaking that didn't pander the way so many other superhero movies do like keeping things light hearted, throwing in too much humor, and destruction porn. Quicksilver was spectacular and the 3D in "that" scene was amazing.

I'll be there day 1 for the next one.

The nice thing about multiple timelines means you can pretend Origins happened in another timeline. That's why there is Wolverine, Stryker and so on, but how the events played out doesn't completely match up with the other films.

Having said that later films incorporated elements from it, such as the bone claws, Wolverine fighting in a bunch of wars, having a nightmare of Kayla..

Well, Beast can control his mutation through medicine in DoFP. So seeing him as human in X2 isn't really a continuity blip.

Any 3D impressions?

Noticeable here and there, but nothing really special.
Thankfully, there weren't any scenes where the 3D was forced (stuff flying towards you in in slow-motion).

Saw it today, enjoyed it.

As for how it compares with the others Id put it above the wolverines and 3. About as good as 1, 2 and first class.

Honestly Blink was probably my favorite new character in this film.

I felt bad for Colossus though,
he only got wrecked
. Who was that guy with the daggers that worked with Blink though?

Also, postcredits scene and possible story spoiler:
who are the 4 knights of the apocalypse? I know Gambit is one of them but who are the others?

The 4 horsemen don't really make sense because of the time period unless they are new.

Any 3D impressions?

- Future scenes were darker than I wanted them to be and unfortunately didn't completely understood few of those action bits. They might look better in other theater's though.

+ Rest of the movie looked nice, bright and easy for your eyes.

Three particularly noticeable effects ranked in terms of noteworthiness:
Quicksilver scene (the highlight of the movie for many)
Some parts of the Magneto action scene towards the end of the movie; let's keep this spoiler free.
The attack future Sentinels do with their face.

Gimmicks: None. As Mr_Zombie said there are no "stuff flying towards you in in slow-motion".

Overall the movie had "natural" 3D cinematography, instead of a "showy" one and you won't be missing anything if you watch the 2D version (although I don't regret watching it in 3D either!)

edit on the other hand, for example, I couldn't follow shit during the Edge of Tomorrow 3D trailer. I didn't understand more than half of the shots of it. Too fast, too shakey, etc.

Really enjoyed it. It was inches away from topping X2 for me, but didn't quite make it. I think it was partially because of the lack of the Singer + Dougherty + Harris magic combo, but hopefully with Apocalypse we'll finally surpass X2. But hot damn does Singer have mutants fighting down to a science - I loved seeing the teamwork on display throughout the film. Blink and Quicksilver were my personal favorite new additions. Overall, there is some serious crow being eaten by many-a-GAFer. So much for the "train-wreck" this movie was going to be.

As of now I'd rank them as follows:

X2 >> DoFP >>> X1 >>>>> The Wolverine (I enjoyed this more than most, I think) >> First Class >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> X3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> X-Men Orgins: Wolverine

Ranked and rated:

X2 (~10) > DoFP ? FC (?9?) >> X1 (7.5) >> X3 (6) > The Wolverine (5) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Origins (~1)

Or in other words, X2/FC/DoFP are excellent, X1 is good but dated, X3 is misguided but serviceable, The Wolverine is goofy but ok for what it is (spin-off), and Origins is crap.

Explanations:

"?" because I am not really sure which of the two I enjoyed the most, I'd like to answer that question months later once I rewatch DoFP at home..
"~10" doesn't mean it's a perfect film, it means it's the best of the franchise.
"~1" doesn't mean it's the worst film ever (although it certainly is one of the worst blockbusters I've ever seen), it means they did the absolute worst they could do with an X-Men movie.

Not to mention Emma Frost in Origins. I don't recall the claws line either, but he could have been referring to the metal ones. The bone claws were always part of his mutation.

She is not called Emma Frost though. She is called Emma, and her sister is called Kayla Silverfox, meaning her full name is likely Emma Silverfox. Lastly in the credits she is listed as "Kayla's sister", again not Emma Frost.

"You were always an animal. We just gave you claws." Stryker said that in X2.

Saw it yesterday, caught the last screening of the day, why is the movie so good (for a comic movie). I and the friends i went with were all blown away. Tied with X2, but X2 is better i guess, it flows? better. I don't know, it's not the pacing it's just how everything falls together.

So pissed off, ten minutes into the movie the theater (and the entire surrounding area) loses power for some reason. Power company saying online it looks like a malfunctioning transformer - 10k customers affected.

Have to keep track of my ticket stub to get a ticket to another showing later (probably tomorrow since who knows when shitty Dominion will get power back on), but really not looking forward to sitting through another half hour of the same trailers again.

Still, I was grinning from ear to ear hearing Ottman's X-Men theme again.

This movie was pretty sweet, definitely the best X-Men movie since X2.

I have to give a particular nod to
all the future fight scenes with the Sentinels. Those Sentinels were badass as hell, as were all the X-Men fighting them.
Definitely the highlights of the movie outside of Quicksilver.
