Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

I think it's true that we won't just keep getting more and more, but we are by no means scraping the bottom of the barrel right now. I fully expect the roster of this game to be between 50 and 55.

The only thing people seem to underestimate is Sakurai's ambition. The man is a fuckin dynamo.

There are tons of great characters left to use, but we have 0 'mario/link' level of characters left. No main protagonist that has been in nintendo games since the NES or SNES and persisted through the years. Either the franchises died out in the 80s/90s or they're new. No more 'obvious' additions. Now it's just villains, or characters that are new/have only been in 1-2 titles.

Rosalina, if you could? I'm really curious to see how she works with Luma. Like, just how independent Luma is, the attack changes between solo Rosalina and Rosie/Luma together, stuff like that. She's the newcomer I'm looking forward to the most, and the most unique looking one as well.
Can do.

From MMX6?

I'm not really annoyed by your post. I just wanted an excuse to post this picture. He's from MMX 5 by the way.

Well, at the very least, the Assist Trophy pool is always there to pull from.

While I would like to have a bigger roster, I don't think the 3DS could handle having that many characters.

What would even make you say this? Do you think the cartridges are low on space? (Hint: They aren't)

Hoping for a Rhythm Heaven rep and especially Chibi-Robo as far as newcomers from more recent and successful Nintendo series. RH rep is probably happening (especially if the second gematsu leak is real) but I'm not too hopeful for Chibi Robo, as much as I want him playable. :(

We've gone to hell and back on this particular topic but to sum it up "no, the 3DS could probably handle any number of characters since the cartridges are much bigger than you'd think and roster size doesn't affect how it plays."

Just watch Chibi-Robo get announced as the Bamco rep.

I don't think people give the 3DS enough credit. I'm not a technical guy but isn't the 3DS stronger than the GC (at least in a lot of areas) and even the Wii in some? Some people don't think it can handle the Ice Climbers for some reason. Also, the 3DS can go up to 8GB even though this isn't likely and Brawl was only around that because of the cutscenes.

Correct. Roster size doesn't matter. What MIGHT matter is certain types of characters (like ice climbers) where the 3DS can't handle the A.I. for 4 Ice Climbers (8 on screen, 4 playable, 4 A.I. controlled) and retain the 60 fps framerate. I'm hoping sakurai and team are wizards and managed to keep them in, as they are. I'll be very sad if they're gone, or reduced to 'Ice Climber' where you pick one or the other :(

While I think it can, it's just worrying that they haven't been shown yet, so fear is getting the best of me. In some ways it's better than gamecube, in others, it's not. Gamecube didn't have an operating system working in the background at all times. 3DS does. :/

Damn. But I swear he was in 6. Like, after you beat Nightmare Zero and High Max, he'd be there in the alternate paths. And he'd always say that Japanese phrase for "later" but it always sounded like "Dinner" to me. So yeah. I SWEAR HE WAS IN BOTH. I just like 6 more. Oddly.

I thought he was in both too. But I get High Max and Dynamo mixed up completely, so I don't know. Doesn't help that it's been years since I played those games anyway.

He was in both, but X5 is where he was a major character actually involved in the plot.

I'm not too concerned. A lot of characters that are obviously returning haven't been shown yet.

Guys, pokémon xy has 600+ unique 3d models, I don't there's any need for concern in that department.

Heck look at Brawl, it's around 7 gb, the majority being audio and cutscene files. There are 8gb 3ds cartridges, so yeah

I know. I really hope they are back. The main reason they might not have been shown yet is the same reason it took yoshi and ike so long to be shown, that they're getting a visual overhaul. Maybe they're trying to master the fur on their parka. NEXT GEN FURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Wario and Meta Knight haven't been shown either and I doubt either is getting a major overhaul
meta knight will be beat with the nerf stick hard though

Oh no you're not wrong about that, he was in 6 also as a secret boss. It's just that the first game he was in was 5 which is the only game that really gave a shit about him.

Oops took too long to type this and was beaten.

We've seen the Ice Climber enemy Polar Bear as Smash Run enemy though.

In a worst case scenario, I guess they could be redesigned to be standalone characters (with Nana and Popo being available through different color/costume choices), rather than the usual double team. It'd kill their "unique feature", but they've already done that with Zelda and Sheik anyway.

So their overhaul might not be visual, it might be with actual gameplay. They were both newcomers in the last game, and most brawl newcomers have had modifications to their movsets already. Particularly ZSS, Charizard, Dedede, olimar, and pit, in particular, all have new or changed moves. Brawl was almost like a 'test' for them, and they got tweaked substantially for this one. Just like a lot of melee characters got changed quite a bit for brawl. I'd say Metaknight was definitely in need of huge changes (in addition to his gliding mechanic possibly being cut). I know a lot of people liked wario's movset, but I can see there being room for improvement there, too (especially his neutral special). Especially with new wario games having been released since then.

We've seen the Ice Climber enemy Polar Bear as Smash Run enemy though.

The polar bear is my bastion of hope

Would people ever accept if they tried to introduce a new character/brand in Smash Bros?

Sort of like Diddy Kong Racing

Woah, didn't know that happened with banjo. Crazy.

I'd say if the delay was only a few months,, and the character and game both looked cool, people would get really, really hyped.

If they look anything like the reject Kingdom Hearts enemies that I kept seeing in the Subspace Emissary then no thank you.

But technically Roy could maybe count considering his game didn't come out until 2002.
Of course they only released the prequel to that game in the USA leaving us with a cliffhanger ending. Then they did that again with the DS Fire Emblem games by not releasing the second game with Marth in it. Nintendo is run by bastards.

I'd say that Pit is actually the closest thing to that idea, since he was completely redesigned for his Brawl appearance, and he's an heroic main character, not a boss or random grunts.

Maybe that'll happen for takamaru or something, where his redesign is used for sakurai's next game :p

I don't understand why we do not have any names for the Invitational at E3 yet

With the best buy stuff just now being announced, I wouldn't be surprised if we hear from nintendo this week. That said, maybe they're busy w/ mario kart 8 launch :p

Not really, he still uses many moves from his game, even though he looks different.

The only character in smash that is arguably an original character is ROB. While loosely based on the toy of the same name, ROB has nothing in common with the toy outside of general appearance, a few movements, and that one special move. The rest of him, like his attacks and abilities, are completely original. He's also arguably the main character of the Subspace emissary (along with DeDeDe I'd say, but a lot of his stuff got cut) and even has a series logo that incorporates the SSE logo into it, showing how he's just as much a SSE character as he is loosely based on the toy.

However, people still hated ROB even with the loose association, so I don't think Sakurai will ever add another original character, especially one without some sort of grounding.

ROB's new smash announcement will be interesting to see the reactions. Probably a mix of half hearted excitement, disappointment some random character who was never being added wasn't added, or outright indifference.

I don't see ROB being cut, but he's not really the world's most exciting character. He also might be one of the few Smash characters to get a major icon overhaul considering it's not relevant anymore.

Who do you think they will reveal this friday?!

I would imagine that we are getting Blue Shell on Thursday or Friday.

I don't understand why we do not have any names for the Invitational at E3 yet

Maybe this week or next week.

I think there are plenty of newcomers on the way. Roster size will be around 50.

I have a weird feeling that we might get more than 50 but I'm not expecting that tho.

Not really, he still uses many moves from his game, even though he looks different.

He has three specials based on the original game, but everything else was basically original, including the basis of his standard moveset, the split bow. And, of course, like you say there, his design was heavily changed.

If we're just looking at movesets completely made by Smash bros, there isn't only ROB, but also Fox, Captain Falcon, the Ice Climbers, Sheik...

don't we already have a "double" character with a separate AI?

I'm actually really excited! ROB is one of my favorite characters to use against friends, he's so annoying. If they keep his icon the same, and if by some chance alt costumes are more common than they were in Brawl (which I think is unlikely), I hope we get Ancient Minister with arms outfit.

The distinction between ROB and those characters is his heavy role in Smash's story mode. Those other characters are clearly meant to be Smash versions of their in-game counterparts (Pit lives in the sky and talks to Palutena, Ice Climbers climb, Sheik is Zelda, etc. Nothing about ROB has anything to do with the toy outside of the top move.

Blah. If anyone should have been an assist trophy it would have to be ROB.

Then we could have had a real super fighting robot instead.

I'd argue F-Zero is what it is because of Smash Bros also. During the GBA and GCN era, F-Zero was a pretty important series, and I think a lot of that is because of how popular Captain Falcon was as a Smash Bros fighter.

Unfortunately, neither the GCN or GBA F-Zero games sold very well. I have no idea if the F-Zero TV show was popular either.

Nitnendo made a huge, huge, huge push on F-Zero during that era, and it just never panned out. I wouldn't be surprised if they never go back to it, as unfortunate as that is.

Of course not.

Eh, I've always been pretty indifferent towards R.O.B., and this would accurately summarize my reaction towards his announcement. With friends, no one really picks him, and I don't find him fun to play as or against. I'm hoping for an overhaul to make him more viable, as all his attacks feel really "janky" unlike someone like Diddy, who feels more natural in comparison.
