Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

I didn't even really notice that the SSE had an icon. Looking at it, I think they based the SSE icon off of ROB's icon, rather than the other way around. Also, it's not exactly the same:
Subspace_Emissary_Logo.jpg

ROBSymbol.png
Yeah, I'd agree that it's probably the other way around. It's the top from a different angle basically, with maybe some shadows going on. I think the presence of that symbol, along with ROB's role in the game, makes it arguable that ROB IS the "Subspace Emmisary". Either way, ROB is basically the playable SSE original enemy, and his role as the main character of the story mode certainty puts him closer into "original character" territory than say, Pit.

Eh, I've always been pretty indifferent towards R.O.B., and this would accurately summarize my reaction towards his announcement. With friends, no one really picks him, and I don't find him fun to play as or against. I'm hoping for an overhaul to make him more viable, as all his attacks feel really "janky" unlike someone like Diddy, who feels more natural in comparison.
Dude, he's a robot.

Unfortunately, neither the GCN or GBA F-Zero games sold very well. I have no idea if the F-Zero TV show was popular either.

Nitnendo made a huge, huge, huge push on F-Zero during that era, and it just never panned out. I wouldn't be surprised if they never go back to it, as unfortunate as that is.

That show could have been something awesome. The actual racing animation was terrible with these 3D CGI things that moved so slowly. The action was terrible.

On the Ice Climbers topic. Now with Rosalina and Olimar I fully expect Ice Climbers as I always have. Luma has a much simpler model but it's animations are completely different that Rosalina's and it's controls seem much more complex the Ice Climbers. Now I do know about de-syncing but they still double up with the exact same animations so I think they will be in almost exactly as they were.

ROB is awesome! I didn't use him because I always felt he was a little too OP. He wasn't, just against the characters I used. But ROB hate burns my blood. It took 2 games for G&W to get some respect so hopefully the same can be said for ROB as well.

Earthbound as a whole sucks anyway, could never see the appeal. Ness is better then Lucas though.

If you're at all interested in being polite to your fellow human beings, it helps to state opinions like this "I never liked Earthbound anyway, but I prefer Lucas to Ness" instead of making it sound objective, which insults everyone who disagrees with you.

If you want to be uncivil though, just keep it up, you're doing great :)

don't we already have a "double" character with a separate AI?

We do, but i'd argue that luma (or pikmin's) A.I. is less than what nana has to do. On her own, nana tries to recover, whereas luma and pikmin don't. I'm sure nana does more than that, too, as far as AI goes, but i dunno. Her character model is also much more detailed, so that could be a factor, also. I'm 95% sure they'll be back, and intact, it's just worrying that it's been a year and we've had no sign, especially considering how early they were revealed for the last 2 games.

ROB >

ROB is the one character I consistently fail to remember when discussing who we think is gonna get in with my friends.
None of us remember him really.

Like, seeing the discussion over the last page or so has made me go "Oh yeah, ROB was in Brawl!"

Would be a shame to see him go though.

The only reason I could see ROB not showing up is if for some reason Sakurai considers him part of SSE and thinks he should remain exclusive to the game with SSE in it.

But that's really stupid, and the other SSE enemies show up in Smash Run anyway, so...

ROB is only an enemy in Smash Run confirmed.

Out of interest, who? I think PS All Stars struggled because many of the characters weren't recognisable, and I don't think I'd want the same thing to happen with Smash.

It struggled for more reasons than that.

Smash bros is also a success for more reasons than that.

I do agree, but had they put Lara, Crash and Spyro in I feel that would have helped a lot, especially for its commercial success.

Smash Bros (particularly Melee) has a much better fighting system with the %, far better controls and a far more charming cast, but I still think All Stars was competent. My issue with All Stars was that no matter how good you were at fighting, the characters with the best Supers (Cole) would win, because when you played it enough nearly even Super other than the ones like his could be dodged easily.

I prefer Smash by a long way, and I consider Smash a large part of my childhod (Melee was a game I played a lot when growing up), but I do still wish that All Stars 2 was being made, as they could have fixed the serious issues it had and the presentation, and then it could have been a great game.

The problem with that is that sony doesn't own those. In order to have recognizable characters, it would have to mainly be a 3rd party fest. They sold off crash and spyro to activision. Sony is known for it's great 3rd party support, not first party. They have a good amount of great first party, but when people think of their favorite games on PS1, PS2 and even PS3, 80% of them will be 3rd party (MGS, Final Fantasy, Crash bandicoot, Spyro, tomb raider, etc). Playstation's 'All stars' don't actually belong to sony.

That and the game's 'final smash only' mechanic was dumb. How bad would smash bros be if you could only KO with final smashes.

Smash already has every iconic Nintendo character except Mii, so it's not really in any danger of not having a good roster

Could be worse, look at Mario Kart 8's roster. At least an entire row of Smash's selection screen isn't baby versions of other characters.

My opinions tend to be belligerent because I put things bluntly. I'm sorry I offended people. If people told me they didn't like such and such game in the same way I wouldn't "politely" snap at them, I'd respect their opinion.

I think the main problem was that the game didn't feel right at all. God awful UI. There was no good/iconic music for the game to associate itself with. Gameplay felt like there was no consequence to getting hit. Super moves were an awful awful AWFUL way to gain points.

and then yeah, the characters weren't very good.

That is true, but they are characters that Sony are associated with, and in the case of Crash Sony own the people who actually made the game.

I do agree with a heavy reliance on third party being bad, to be honest Snake being in Smash is a little dodgy for me considering the fact that he is far from a Ninty character, even in terms of perception.

True, but I don't want filler. Filler won't make the line up any better, I want a big roster, but I don't want lots of characters I've never heard of.

I do agree, the presentation was beyond awful. And the only time there was a consequence to getting hit really was in 1 on 1's, outside of that there wasn't any.

I don't like the way Super's are in Smash (strongly luck based) but at least you can turn the item off!

It is written: every sword must have a Norse-sounding name

To be a jerk and ruin your joke, Ragnell and it's sister sword, Ettard, are both Arthurian references, which would make them English sounding. Falchion, the sword from FE1,3, and 13 is derived from French.

I use to pick up a lot of mythology by looking up FE weapon names when I first got into the series.

what a NERD

:P

Oh, a PSASBR discussion? I try not to pass up on opportunities to say that:

The reason this game failed is because it was a Smash ripoff without copying the core fundamentals of what makes Smash feel great as a fighting game. Not because of the character selection..

If they gave us a game that felt just like Smash, but with those characters, I can name you over 10 people (including myself) who would have played the shit out of that game, and I'm sure those people can name some friends of their own. Has nothing to do with no Spyro and no Crash. I mean, sure.. that would've helped, but at the end of the day the actual gameplay holds way more weight than its roster.

If you need further proof of that, check out DreamMix TV. That game had a pretty wild selection of characters, but the gameplay was buns.

You should point out that Ettard is called Alondite in the West, Ettard's the name of the Ike-only sword in Radiant Dawn.

Alondite's still an Arthurian reference though (it was the sword wielded by Lancelot).

I'm actually really excited! ROB is one of my favorite characters to use against friends, he's so annoying. If they keep his icon the same, and if by some chance alt costumes are more common than they were in Brawl (which I think is unlikely), I hope we get Ancient Minister with arms outfit.

The distinction between ROB and those characters is his heavy role in Smash's story mode. Those other characters are clearly meant to be Smash versions of their in-game counterparts (Pit lives in the sky and talks to Palutena, Ice Climbers climb, Sheik is Zelda, etc. Nothing about ROB has anything to do with the toy outside of the top move.
Were you banned a couple days ago?

To be fair, the reason that *I* personally did not pick up the game was because I didn't care about any of the fighters. My decision was justified once i later found out that the gameplay mechanics sucked, as well.

I *MIGHT* have picked up the game if people said it was really really fun though, so yeah, that is definitely the PRIMARY reason it bombed.

That's right. I always forget which is which because they never switched them for Ike's trophy in Brawl's Western release.

I kinda wish they had gone the opposite way too, with a more traditional 2D fighter. What they had was kind of a halfway house between Smash and traditional.

That's weird, I guess the Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn localisers didn't tell the Smash localisers about the mix-up.

I still think Alondite's the better name.

How can someone not like Earthbound?

While I like the premise of earthbound, and find it charming, I find the combat, UI, and inventory management to be incredibly tedious. I'm 'indifferent' towards it for that reason, but I can totally understand how some people would love it. (For some shallow reason, I don't like RPG combat where all you see is a picture of the enemy, and then random flashes that are supposed to represent attacks. Looking at you, dragon's quest).

Best Buy locations are up
Oh, hey, there's one at the Best Buy literally a few blocks away from where I work. I guess I know where I'm checking the game out, then.

Fire Emblem: Mars
But Marth's already in the game.

He's from MMX 5 by the way.
Pretty sure he's in X6 as well, though.

Would people ever accept if they tried to introduce a new character/brand in Smash Bros?

Sort of like Diddy Kong Racing
If you mean introduce an upcoming character in Smash, then it already has some precedent; Roy debuted in Smash Bros., after all. I don't just mean in the West, where Marth debuted in Smash Bros. as well; Roy's GBA Fire Emblem hadn't come out when Melee did, and his inclusion was basically just promotion for it.

If you mean make an all-new character for Smash, then while I might be a bit skeptical at first, I suppose I'd be okay with it.
