Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

To be fair, the reason that *I* personally did not pick up the game was because I didn't care about any of the fighters. My decision was justified once i later found out that the gameplay mechanics sucked, as well.

I *MIGHT* have picked up the game if people said it was really really fun though, so yeah, that is definitely the PRIMARY reason it bombed.
Damn, I usually put "main reason" in those posts but I forgot this time lol. You're right though, there are certainly other reasons why people overlooked this game, but I think if the gameplay felt excellent, more people would have been far more forgiving towards its roster and gave it a legitimate chance.

It just sucks that it probably won't see a sequel any time soon when it had so much potential as a franchise ;\

While I like the premise of earthbound, and find it charming, I find the combat, UI, and inventory management to be incredibly tedious. I'm 'indifferent' towards it for that reason, but I can totally understand how some people would love it.

Yeah, inventory is pretty terrible. And people are definitely way too obsessed with it which can be annoying. It's also hard to care about the characters (like Poo and Paula) which sort of brings you out of it. Things like Moonside and fighting dinosaurs made me like it though.

How can someone not like Earthbound?

Its humor/satire can be very hit or miss for me, combine that with really weak gameplay mechanics and really boring slogs through overly long dungeons and that just kills it for me. I haven't played Mother 3 yet but I have finished Mother and Earthbound

FWIW Ness is one of my favorite smash characters and Earthbound was a game I wanted for a very long time...'and then I played it :/

PSASBR's success depended on a lot on which and how third parties got on board with the game. Nintendo's success with Smash was helped partially because they owned all their most famous characters and the third parties that were historically significant have been slowly trickling in or have been long since lost.

Sony's nostalgic weapons were all in third party sheaths. Cloud, Lara Croft, Solid Snake, Dante, Chris Redfield, GTA characters, Heihachi (though they got this one), Spyro, Crash, Silent Hill things, etc.

They either didn't get the characters or failed to get the right characters (Rising Raiden instead of Snake or even MGS2 Raiden, NuDante instead of Dante). Can you imagine if Smash were trying to get Mega Man but only got Starforce instead? Or wanted Pikachu but the Pokemon Company would only allow Dedenne?

Out of interest, who? I think PS All Stars struggled because many of the characters weren't recognisable, and I don't think I'd want the same thing to happen with Smash.

That's my point, I don't think worthwhile equals recognizable, that's especially true now that the game has plenty of stars already. I'd say that at this point any addition to Smash should mostly be based on striking a balance between a character being famous and having a unique playstyle. If you want a list, these are characters somehow relevant, either because they're the main characters, antagonists or just famous sidekicks, that I think could be added in future iterations:

Dixie Kong
Ridley
Isaac
Heracles
Captain Rainbow
Black Shadow
Takamaru
Roy
Lyn
Chrom
Robin
Shulk
King K. Rool
Paper Mario
Fawful
Daisy
Waluigi
Dark Samus
Medusa
Hades
Palutena
Toad
Sukapon
Mewtwo
Andy
Tingle
Impa
Ghirahim
Dillon
Tempo
Jill
Mach Rider
Ashley
Captain Syrup
Wonder Red
Krystal
King Boo
Bowser Jr.
Sheriff
Professor E.Gadd
Saki Amamiya
*cough*Geno*cough*
Someone from Rhythm Heaven
Someone from Pilotwings 64
Agent J

I count 45. Some of those could appear like crazy talk now, but we've seen other totally unexpected newcomers already. I think given time Sakurai could easily think up a nice playstyle and moveset for each and everyone of those.

Stupid smash brothers. It has the uncanny ability to alter space-time and make the E3 wait seem longer than I can ever remember. Last year it came and went, this year, every minute takes an hour.

It's not just Smash for me, I'm actually looking forward to all of the big 3 this year, unlike the last few years. I'm also insanely hyped to see Zelda U.

Jesus, this is one of the slowest E3 waits I've ever had. Most years it just comes up for me but this one is slugging along to the start date.

I know :(:(:(:(:(:(:(

  • Smash newcomer reveals
  • Smash release date
  • Smash veteran reveals
  • Smash feature reveals
  • Smash NFC reveals
  • Playable smash at best buy
  • More Hyrule Warriors details and trailer
  • Zelda U reveal
  • NFC game reveal
  • The possibility of a revival for a beloved franchise (to be fair this is possible every E3)

I just heard the mii voice in MK8, if it is playable and has the same voice in Smash it will dethrone Sonic in terms of audible annoyance.

I finally made my submission for the People's Challenger Contest. What do you all think? Be honest with me. Personally, I think my poor speaking ability hurts it, especilally since I was racing to get it under 15 seconds, and I had done about a dozen takes at this point and just wanted it to be over already, but, beyond that, it turned out pretty well.

I understood it on the first go. Only thing bad was the "EH" in the middle. Should of gone with a majestic "ECH!" but thats just me. :P Good job though, was better then I expected.

Also....there are more Puerto Ricans here then I thought ._.

@georly We get games on time now. Your probably way older then me cause I dont remember a time where we got games late.

And lastly, there was a junior member whos birthday was today.....happy birthday? :D (forgot your name ;-;)

So we're already an 8th through this thread, I wonder how long it will take to get to thread 9. I'm going to say a day or two after Nintendo's E3 event.

That is actually a super impressive list, and some of those I hadn't thought of, but I still think many of those wouldn't be quite well known enough to warrant a place.
I want Waluigi now though, that would be great!

Well, back in the 90's, release dates weren't always concrete anyway. All I had to go by was what was in magazines, so if stuff came out after the magazine said it was supposed to, my friends and I just blamed it on the fact that we were in PR. I left in 97.

I'm sorry that I'm going to do something to you!

Wow, Brawl's reveal trailer was really lackluster compared to what we get now. They've put so much more effort into making the character reveals count this time - I mean, what was with Brawl's Wario reveal? He drives in, crashes, and... farts. Atomically. Yep, if that doesn't scream Wario, I don't know what does!
It doesn't scream Wario at all, who thought the Waft was a good idea, again?

The Snake part at the end kinda made up for it, though, I'm not gonna lie. There will never be a Smash Bros. reveal as insanely amazing (or out of left field) as Snake was.

its weird cause nintendo has SO MANY franchises that they could do wonders with.

instead they shit out more smash, more mario, more zelda.

i mean, its great, and i love it

but at this stage theyre just enhanced versions of the last games. where as if they did a new ice climbers, adventures of lolo, startropics, wrecking crew, stunt race.

the list goes on.

So I must say that I've really taken a liking to the visual appearance of the recently "leaked" roster, so I decided to recreate it with all of the confirmed characters so far:

I think it came out quite well, and the three row arrangement would certainly be a unique set-up for the new games in the Smash series.

bottom right 4: sonic, megaman, snake, pac man :)

too bad it's probably fake

Will anyone else be shocked and disappointed if Dixie Kong turns out to not be playable? She along with Ridley, Krystal, King K. Rool seem to be the remaining core characters from the established franchises with more than one rep who've appeared in many Brawl and now SSB4 wishlists.

Out of all the four, I wonder how insane Sakurai would be not to include Dixie Kong especially after the Donkey Kong Country resurgence...

I would shit my pants if we got 51 characters.

Dixie Kong is definitely the most likely DK character if there was another one. I'd be very happy if she's included. Another female fighter would be good too.

I don't expect Dixie. Considering Sakurai's talked about her being considered for Smash Bros., it seems like they cut her for a reason. I don't think he liked how she was turning out.
