Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

I remember being antsy and eager as all hell... for Melee's release. That was 13 years ago. Feels like it was yesterday. :/

I remember that too - that year I bought the game early, but couldn't play it until Xmas. It was excruciating, all I could do was look through the manual. I was only 11/12 and we didn't have internet yet, so when I got the game I genuinely didn't know about all the secret stuff.

Characters like G&W and Marth intrigued me because I had no idea who they were (Marth moreso than G&W) and look at us now, discussing which FE characters we want to see playable in Smash thanks to Melee.

Do you guys think it might only be the symmetrical characters that are mirrored ingame? I figure it makes the most sense because the symmetrical ones would have a single "good side" in the first place, while the asymmetrical ones like Samus would probably try and show off both their different sides when moving around.

100% yes. Neorice pointed it out because he had to look at poses and stuff for his size comparison and drawing sprites. Anyone who holds a sword isn't mirrored because the hand they hold it in is important. Little mac isn't mirrored because he's a boxer and there is a big difference between his right and left punches.

Characters like greninja, however, are mirrored. Even though the tongue is always on one side, it gets mirrored because his tongue doesn't affect his attacks (afaik).

It's already been confirmed that swordsmen like Marth won't be mirrored, so yes, it's mainly the symmetrical characters that are getting mirrored. I believe that Mega Man is mirrored too, and his gun will switch hands, so I guess the only characters who won't be mirrored are ones for whom it would be too much work to switch the arms around.

Mega Man is mirrored. In fact, I could see him being the whole reason for this feature. The extremely faithfully recreated Mega Man for this game, complete with the Mega Buster coming out of each of his arms depending on which way he's facing. I could believe that they coded in that feature for him, and then decided to add in on to the other symmetrical characters.

Edit: Nevermind. Guess I can't link to the site. So blah.

On Wii U Daily there's an article about Sakurai and the Bandai team mentioning they're thinking about mewtwo for Smash4.

... Considering it's got a name like "Wii U Daily" for a site, I'm pretty sure it's fake.

I'd like to think Mewtwo has as much a chance of returning as any other vet, but I'm not that confident.

But man I'd love to have Mewtwo make his return.

Roy too, but I think that's not happening.

New Stages I'm looking forward to.

The Little Mac Boxing Ring

The Galaxy Stage

Wii Fit Exercise Room

Gerudo Valley

Fire Emblem Stage (3DS)

Wily's Tower

I think I'll hate Paulatena's Temple.

Palutena's Temple may become one of my all time favorites, really looking forward to it

Pit's old recovery would've been amazing for flying around and avoiding everyone, too bad

I want to believe Palutena's Temple will be a return to form for big stages, I just can't see how with only 4 players the battle will be fun

So far, I like the looks of the 3DS stages better than the Wii U ones. I'm excited for Prism Tower, Rainbow Road, Spirit Train, and Gerudo Valley; Tortimer Island looks more interesting than Town and City (which doesn't look much different from Smashville); and Jungle Japes is a better retro stage than Halberd, I think.

So far the stages I'm most looking forward to are Dr. Wily's Castle, Pilot Wings, Windy Hill, and Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii U version, and Find Mii, Reset Bomb Forest, Prism Tower, and Spirit Train for the 3DS version.

As for stages I'd most like to see return... Frigate Orpheon, Spear Pillar (yes, really), Pirate Ship, and Silph Co. (SSB64) top my list.

On the other hand, if I never had to play 75m, Mario Bros., New Pork City, or Jungle Falls again, I'd be fine with that too!

Speaking of stages, which one are your favourites? My top ten:

  1. Hyrule Castle - More than the size, I love the asymmetry going on. It has a lot of verticality in the center with the tower, while the structure on the right can make for some really hectic matches.
  2. Big Blue - The sense of speed is unparalleled, and I also love how it gives you just the right amount of leeway to let you get back on the cars if you end up falling. My only complaint is that the cars are so close to each other that they end up clipping. It looks ridiculous.
  3. Sector Z - Corneria was TOO GODDAMN SMALL. Interesting geometry nonetheless.
  4. Fountain of Dreams - Battlefield for the conoisseurs. The music makes me biased, admittedly.
  5. Pirate Ship - I'm not usually a fan of stages full of hazards, but I can forgive the bombs in here because they come very slowly. The graphics are gorgeous, and I love how it captures the feeling of adventure from The Wind Waker.
  6. Poké Floats - It's like a side-scrolling stage, except the platforms are the ones that are zaping through instead of you. It's easier to focus on the fighting this way unlike, say, Mushroomy Kingdom.
  7. Shadow Moses Island - The walls make for a caged match feel that I adore. Also, no hazards! Yay!
  8. Great Bay - Hyrule Temple can be fun with the right people, but it eventually gets tedious to fight at very high percentages while no KOs are happening. Great Bay has the opposite feeling to me, with the small platforms forcing everyone to concentrate on the fighting.
  9. Luigi's Mansion - Tetris music. It's also one of the few static stages in Brawl all around, so maybe it stands out to me in comparison. The different floors make it look claustrophobic in a sense, but it is not restrictive when compared to Spear Pillar, for example.
  10. Fourside - It has the narrow pits from Saffron City, but it is still conducive to pure battling. Also, UFOs.

Does anyone have that gif or webm from the reveal trailer where all of the core characters are shown off after each of their franchise names pop up? Can't seem to find it.

All I really have to say about stages is that Brawl's Battlefield is awesome while the ledges on Melee's Battlefield can go burn in hell.

I refuse to blame my horrible recovery skills on that stage on my lack of skill. It's the stage's fault!111!!!!1!111!1!!

Mallo from Pushmo would be really interesting.

I can't think of a proper moveset.

And that makes me excited.

What could possibly be done?

the same goes in reverse for Final Destination ;)

So many pages. Took me a while to catch up. I have been thinking of taking a day off work for some E3 fun, but now that I see that the demo for Smash will be like 30 miles away from my house, I think I'll be taking a Wednesday off instead of a Tuesday. I can't wait to get my hands on the new game. I'm going to be picking up brawl in the next week or two to share with my son. The fact that it can be played with a Wii mote is probably the biggest selling point. It'll be full circle, because I traded in my old copy of brawl to help pay for formula when he was very little.
