Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

Speaking of stages, which one are your favourites? My top ten:

  1. Hyrule Castle - More than the size, I love the asymmetry going on. It has a lot of verticality in the center with the tower, while the structure on the right can make for some really hectic matches.
  2. Big Blue - The sense of speed is unparalleled, and I also love how it gives you just the right amount of leeway to let you get back on the cars if you end up falling. My only complaint is that the cars are so close to each other that they end up clipping. It looks ridiculous.
  3. Sector Z - Corneria was TOO GODDAMN SMALL. Interesting geometry nonetheless.
  4. Fountain of Dreams - Battlefield for the conoisseurs. The music makes me biased, admittedly.
  5. Pirate Ship - I'm not usually a fan of stages full of hazards, but I can forgive the bombs in here because they come very slowly. The graphics are gorgeous, and I love how it captures the feeling of adventure from The Wind Waker.
  6. Poké Floats - It's like a side-scrolling stage, except the platforms are the ones that are zaping through instead of you. It's easier to focus on the fighting this way unlike, say, Mushroomy Kingdom.
  7. Shadow Moses Island - The walls make for a caged match feel that I adore. Also, no hazards! Yay!
  8. Great Bay - Hyrule Temple can be fun with the right people, but it eventually gets tedious to fight at very high percentages while no KOs are happening. Great Bay has the opposite feeling to me, with the small platforms forcing everyone to concentrate on the fighting.
  9. Luigi's Mansion - Tetris music. It's also one of the few static stages in Brawl all around, so maybe it stands out to me in comparison. The different floors make it look claustrophobic in a sense, but it is not restrictive when compared to Spear Pillar, for example.
  10. Fourside - It has the narrow pits from Saffron City, but it is still conducive to pure battling. Also, UFOs.
I dont have a particular order but:
1. Hyrule Temple
2. Corneria
3. Luigi's Mansion
4. Mushroom Kingdom 2
5. Green Greens
6. Princess Peach's Castle
7. Delfino Plaza
8. Saffron City
9. Onett
10. Pirate Ship

Those are my favorites but there are plenty of other stages that I love that give Smash its own unique flavor. I had a lot of fun with Wario Ware Inc. However in general I'm a fan of medium sized stages with one trademark event/gimmick and some unique layout/elevations. Not as keen on small plain stages, vertical scrolling stages or overly gimmicky/hazard stages where you fight the stage more than the players..

Looks like someone has a lot of bad memories of getting swept down that river :p

Great news if that leaked list is actually true, it's much better than I was expecting. There's a few people that I literally have no idea who there are and it's a bit weird not having M2K as I would expect him to be willing to clear entire schedule to make it to something like this but all things considered it's going to be a blast.

Wait, where's the tourney entrant list!?

So far the stages I'm most looking forward to are Dr. Wily's Castle, Pilot Wings, Windy Hill, and Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii U version, and Find Mii, Reset Bomb Forest, Prism Tower, and Spirit Train for the 3DS version.

As for stages I'd most like to see return... Frigate Orpheon, Spear Pillar (yes, really), Pirate Ship, and Silph Co. (SSB64) top my list.

On the other hand, if I never had to play 75m, Mario Bros., New Pork City, or Jungle Falls again, I'd be fine with that too!

For a moment, I read that you wanted those stages back as well. I was horrified.

Too many fun stages. I'll just list my top picks per game:

N64:
1. Saffron City
2. Hyrule Caste
3. Planet Zebes
4. Sector Z

Melee:
1. Mute City
2. Poke Floats
3. Rainbow Cruise
4. Kongo Jungle
5. Icicle Mountain
6. Pokemon Stadium
7. Onett

Brawl:
1. Delfino Plaza
2. Rumble Falls
3. Spear Pillar
4. Mushroomy Kingdom Surface
5. Pirate Ship
6. Mario Circuit
7. Bridge of Eldin
8. Port Town Aero Dive
9. Green Hill Zone
10. Pictochat

So apparently M2K's not going as of now because Nintendo/E3 production are afraid of his Asperger's. Kind of lame..

Anything you guys want to know specifically? About to go to sleep though but maybe I'll try finding out more later.

I think it's more of trying to sell good imagination to the public, which is unfortunate.

Aw Hugs is there too. He seems so cool, I'd love to see him play. I'd also love Wife's analysis, too bad he appears absent, even if he recently isn't big on playing anyway.

I was scared they'd be that way with him. Which is a serious fucking shame if true. The guy has plenty of experience at tournaments, he's the face of the game. He's earned it more than anyone.

Without money on the line I can see why Mango may not want to go, with the baby and all. I might not. But I think Mew2King would jump at the chance.

Whats the story behind this? Has it been a problem in the past? I thought Mew2King would be a lock for sure.

Speaking of stages, which one are your favourites? My top ten:
  1. Poké Floats
  2. Norfair
  3. Big Blue
  4. Pictochat
  5. Spear Pillar (Dialga version)
  6. Battlefield (Melee)
  7. Peach's Castle (64)
  8. Fourside
  9. Halberd
  10. Port Town Aero Dive (would probably be higher if the cars weren't killing machines; they're toned down to an acceptable level in Project M, though)

For someone who mostly plays on Battlefield, FD, Smashville because that's what most people prefer, I really seem to like the chaotic stages.

Honorable mention to Sample S: Hole. I feel like that stage hits all the right dynamics for some really fun matches--would probably be better without the spikes on the left side, though. There's a pretty notable lack of ledgeless stages throughout the series, but I think this level makes it work.

Barely know one competitive Smash player from the next but that sounds incredibly shit on Nintendo's part. M2K doesn't have a history of harassing people or whatever else they could possibly be going off, right?

Isn't this like straight up discrimination? Or do I have a critical misunderstanding of what Asperger's is or the severity of M2K's case? Granted I don't follow Smash pros but I've never heard anyone say anything bad about him or that he was especially difficult to work with.

He's had a few incidents in the past where he's given up in tournaments or put in a poor effort/had a very negative aura about him. He also had a bit of a mess in Japan a couple years back. I think he's done a good job turning his image around for the better recently, but I could see why Nintendo would still be cautious about inviting him despite his high skill level. I feel that's he changed enough to earn the right to go, but apparently Nintendo saw otherwise.

I think he's been somwhat negligent to instruction in the past, but only small things, and certainly not anytime in recent memory.

Wow, thats really, really shitty if true. Seriously, the guy is an Icon as far as smash bros goes :/

I don't know any specifics but I would assume it's Nintendo being afraid he might accidently swear/meltdown during the live broadcast.

Well, there's this:

Mew2King's well-publicized trip to Japan proved to be a disaster. Mew2King prepared poorly for the trip, bringing with him only US$200. He hoped that he would win considerable money from money matches, not realizing that such games were considered gambling and thus illegal in Japan. He was also criticized for failing to make a detailed travel plan, as well as learning little about the culture or language.[2] Within a day of arriving, he had reportedly spent all of his money and lost his cell phone. Additionally, while staying with professional Japanese smasher Nietono, he proceeded to vomit on his host's futon[3]. Mew2King's poor conduct at Nietono's residence was particularly criticized, as Nietono had previously traveled to the United States to take part in Apex 2012, which itself had multiple controversies relating to the treatment of the Japanese players; coupled with these previous incidents, some observers claimed that Mew2King's behavior could cause Japanese players to begin developing a negative image relating to American players, harming the possibility of their participation in further international tournaments

I don't follow the Smash scene whatsoever, but I definitely remember the vomiting on the futon story.

Yeah, they said "as of now" because not everyone on that list is 100% going. I heard Wizzrobe was denied because he's only 16 (17 is the cutoff) even though he was recommended.

Maybe they'll work it out with M2K somehow.
Why no Mango & PPMD?
PPDM is on the list, but not certain about Mango. Apparently he doesn't even want to play the next Smash lol

EDIT:

Yup, there's some history there with M2K at events, but who knows.. These are under different circumstances, after all.

If that's true, it certainly doesn't reflect well on Nintendo/E3 staff, but I can kinda see where they're coming from. This invitational is first and foremost a publicity event, which means they'll want it to go off without a hitch. If they think there's even a chance that a potential invitee will be anything other than a perfect gentleman, they'll think twice about him. As soon as they saw the word "Asperger's," they probably said, "he's an unknown quantity, can't have him" (I'm sure the vomiting-on-the-futon thing didn't help, either.) It's unfortunate, and it's certainly an indecent thing to do, but I'm sure they feel that, from a business standpoint, it's the only option.

As someone who has given M2K a ride cross country and whose friend housed him for a few days, I can tell you he can be extremely awkward, closed off, and self-entitled--especially in a non-tournament setting where he's around people he isn't very comfortable with. That was a few years ago, though, and as I understand he's come along a bit more since then. This is a guy who pretty much lives and breathes this one game, and it's understandable that Nintendo might not want to associate themselves with him. Still a bummer for him to not be in if that list is real.

So are the people on the invite list legit? Are they considered the best of the best? I don't have a clue of the competitive scene so please excuse my ignorance.

Da fuq? Having Asperger's myself, this hits a little close to home.

If true, given the vomit story/anecdote above I guess I could understand. Shame though since he's one of the biggest faces of the scene.
