Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

who is this Captain Flacon fellow you speak of

Oh didn't you hear? A new F-Zero is in the works staring Captain Falcon's sinister twin Captain Flacon. I just assumed Sakurai would choose him since he's more relevant.

About the list I just posted, a big reason why it feels incomplete to me is that their is no retro revival. Yes we could certainly argue Little Mac but he did get revived in a very legit sequel for Wii. It is only 1 game since the SNES era but where do you draw the line? He got his revival outside of Smash and is now one of the current crew. Even if Tropical Freeze didn't exist I would never say Donkey Kong wasn't revived.

That list without someone like Takamaru or Sukapon does not sit well with me. Even Dixie and Mewtwo just seem like no brainers to me.

I think the leak is just incomplete is all.

Why assume that the roster is going to be a rectangle?

even Melee's is almost a rectangle, so...

unless you think SSB4 character selection screen is gonna go anime with some random shape

The one that has me the most skeptical is Shulk of all characters. A one off character from a game that is very niche, wasn't internally developed, doesn't have a very unique playstyle (we have plenty of sword users) and likely won't get any sequels strikes me as odd. Then again Ness and Lucas got in Smash so who's to say Shulk won't; after all the developers do have history with Namco and it is a spiritual successor of a Namco franchise.

Shulk would play absolutely nothing like other sword characters, not to mention this whole "too many sword users" thing is BS to begin with

Well, Melee didn't.

Looks like someone didn't unlock Sonic and Tails!!

Shulk is definitely the weak link for me -- had anyone but Gematsu "leaked" him I'd have written the leak off -- but I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to suspect that he might be in the game. He certainly has more going for him than someone like Isaac or Saki.

  1. Nintendo owns Monolith Soft, so in that sense Shulk is a pure Nintendo character.
  2. Xenoblade is one of the most acclaimed games of the last generation. Famitsu readers ranked it as their sixth favorite Nintendo game of all time.
  3. As you mentioned, Xenoblade is comparable to Mother. The original SSB had a tiny roster consisting of 12 characters, and somehow Ness made the cut. Shulk being in this game would be less of a shock than Ness being in the original.
  4. Shulk might be in X.

Okay, I haven't even played the game and I know that isn't right. Marth who is all about his sword, Link with many handy little weapons. Etc. Shulk would have so much to pull from, because of what he can do. Plus his sword has a nice trait to it.

Too many swords, isn't really a thing. With many of the characters who are without such.

Don't people get tired of parroting this shit?

Nintendo obviously values it somewhat if they are going to make a spiritual sequel and have in the puzzle section of their 3DS app.

So no more transformations i realize, but are squirttle and bulby not going to make it? I wouldn't really miss em that much but I'm taking headcount.

When I said that I meant in conjunction with the other facts about him. Ness made it in despite being from a niche franchise but he had a pretty unique style and design to him that seperates him from the rest of the cast. Im sure Sakurai would design a unique moveset representative of Shulk of he were to be in Smash. However, given that this character will likely be a one off character in a niche game coupled with the fact that I'm not sure if he has an interesting enough aesthetic and unique design to justify making the roster.

All things said for Shulk fans, Id be happy if he made it in. I personally kinda grouped Shulk's likelihood in the same ranking as Wonder Red, Isaac, Chibi Robo, etc. But I'm not claiming to be some all knowing person and Sakurai has been known to surprise people on more than one occasion. Shulk does have one major thing working for him and that is that his game was so well received.

Yep.

Got a fuckload of them. Gotta go through em' first. I'm researching more methods.

Is For Fun going to be 1v1 or FFA?
If it's the former I have an idea.

Shulk has various Monado Arts that would make him very unique, it's not like Sakurai has to invent things out of thin air for him.

I've never once read this posted anywhere and this is my first time expressing my thoughts on the character. For fans of him I hope he makes it in, I just dont see it as likely. As stated I'd be happy to be wrong.

I'm up for some For Fun matches. Don't think I'll play For Glory till a bit after release. Pumped for Smash Run doe.

In my experience, the best time to play is right after release, because all the bad players are playing then. After a while, they get frustrated and quit, so you're stuck against good players who still play the mode. At least that's how every fighting game i've played is. If anything trophy/sticker/unlock related is tied to for glory, playing at launch is the best time to rack up a decent amount of wins with average skill.

I'll probably stick with 'for fun' or strictly play with friends in the future. Unless I find the time to learn and get good at the game (I say I will every new fighting game, and I never do).

Can you guys talk me into doing this please? I need benefits why!

Because Wii U is the 'real' smash bros for me (big screen, better graphics, couch multiplayer, probably more features), and the 3DS is the practice. Also, 3DS will be great anytime i'm out of the house w/ people who also own it. Good for road trips, vacations, family get togethers, etc. It's also why i'm going digital on 3DS, so that I never leave the house without smash bros. Same w/ Monster hunter and animal crossing. Never know when you might need them. I would have done mario kart digital, too, but it wasn't digital at launch and I don't care to double dip.

Actually never thought of it as being practice and some smash on a vacation or while laying in bed would be nice. I guess the controls on the 3ds is just throwing me off. It also comes out way earlier than the "real" version correct? If so, yeah I might just double dip.

As for answering the question, I do plan on double dipping, but debating on digital vs physical, might get digital for both and some cheap physical later down the line for the sake of having the case
