Fighting Games Weekly | May 26-June 1 | Thank you, Keits

The new Mortal Kombat will definitely outsell Super Smash Bros for Wii U.
Maybe even Super Smash Bros for 3DS (probably not both) though).

Mortal Kombat 10 to signifcantly outpace Mortal Kombat 9 in sales, you heard it here first
(MK9 was at almost 3 million as of the most recent numbers I can find)

I just wanted to point out how cancellable low forward was considered "useless" for T. Hawk by some when it was first brought up in Combofiend's initial USF4 slideshow.

Even if you're keeping up with two games, SF4 might be taking one of those slots. :/

Well, without other buffs to spire, dp, and other combo buttons, cancelable cr mk isn't very important, it doesn't really get him much (except this shenanigan I guess, heh). And at the time, we only knew about cancelable cr mk and better walk speed as buffs. It's the changes to spire startup, spire recovery, lp dp range, and walk speed that, together, make the cr mk being cancelable relevant.

I still don't think he'll be that good. With how SF4 play, he won't ever be on the level of Akuma/Seth. He'll definitely be at his best iteration but top tier? Or top 10? Nah. Also, the video shows a very good T.Hawk player. Of course he'll bring out the best in him.

Unless Smash Wii U does a miracle for Wii u sales.. I think it will be definitely close. Might even edge MK in the long term.

Hah, point taken, but ultimately it wasn't the change in isolation but the change in a new context. Even if it's not the best example, it came to mind as another reason to reserve judgement on paper changes until you try it out in-game and see what tech can or can't be developed with it.

If you set it to 3000
you still don't get a Marvel patch.

I admit. I laughed.

My thoughts exactly.

He'll be above average is what I'm saying.

Last year, Mr. Boon said it was closer to a shipment of 4 million.

Mortal Kombat actually sold more than Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe.

Shipment doesn't mean sales though.

Yup, i remember that!
People love to "theory fight" without actually playing the game.

ie: I bitched about Yun being nerfed to hell. (The buffs werent announced then) V__V

I can see Hawk at the bottom of the top 10. His buffs will really help him with his worst matchups. If they become 4-6's instead of 3-7 or 2-8, then he's high tier at worst. I can see why he got every buff he did now.

He won't be Yun tier.

As for AE on Steam- I'd say right now it's not worth playing online, it's got more issues than PSN. At least I can play as Alstein, though I need my unlocker again.

Time for Love Max now.

Somebody pointed out to me that Makoto can now do over 50% off an oki axe kick. Might be why it's unsafe on block now.

So you really think Super Smash Bros will actually experience growth?
4 million on Wii U would be ridiculous, and it'll have higher sales on 3DS.

New Super Mario Bros U has barely shipped over 4 million, and it's bundled, was a launch game, and is from a bigger franchise.

A new MK game in 2015 would be great. Injustice is not really that similar to MK so I think both games would thrive in the US.

MK9 dying off when Injustice came out was somewhat due to the fact that MK9 is kinda janky in some ways, although it gets over that by being really fun.

4 million for Smash on just Wii U is very optimistic.

even assuming a rather pessimistic estimate of 12 million LTD for the Wii U, an attach rate similar to Melee's would put it at 4 million
unless you think the 3DS version is going to take a larger than expected bite out of the Wii U version

(also how the hell is 12 million->4 million "growth")

Most NRS players seem to realize dropping MK9 so quickly after IGAU was a mistake. I don't think it'll happen like that again. Personally I don't like playing two games but when one is much older I can auto pilot. I basically only play MK from major to major.

So similar attach rate of Melee puts it at 4 million... a game that came out a decade ago where the market was vastly different.

This does not account for two major things:

1) It does not account for the many people burnt by Brawl. This happens with just about every game series (even movie franchises) where a disappointing game in the series results in lowered sales for the next game.

2) It also does not account for the 3DS version which will take a good chunk of the sales from the Wii U version. This wouldn't' have been a big issue if the Wii U version was released first but in fact the opposite is happening.

Yeah I don't agree that at all that stream monsters should be blamed so much for Cross Assault, but everything else Wiz said about /r/kappa is pretty solid. Sucks that it's the biggest FGC subreddit because it's a prety bad look.

3D World did 2 million+ on Wii U.

In the end I'd expect Smash and Kart to hit 3 million. They'll be the two best selling Wii U games for its entire
sad, pathetic
life.

eh. r/Kappa started off as a fun trolling sub like r/circlejerk, but then it quickly turned into a hate-subreddit after it grew bigger. And people just use it for venting now.

I could've seen Smash doing 4 million on Wii U easily if it wasn't for the fact that it also had the 3DS version AND it was releasing before the Wii U version. As it is... I feel like the Wii U version is really only for the hardcore crowd and the casuals interested in Smash (who drive the majority of the sales for the franchise) will buy it first on 3DS especially if they don't already have a Wii U.

Is it still too late to contribute to the Q fund? It's not much but I got $15 to spare.

(And my offer to sponsor your entry to the SG side tournament if you enter as "GAF | Professor Beef" still stands, Q.)

I've closed donations but we might need a little more if folks don't mind down the line. I'm waiting on the last few donations to get in. I also have to Register Q and his friend for Evo today and also do a bit more research on a powered wheelchair.

Yup, i remember that!

It still is useless as David pointed out. It was only made relevant with a few other things. =P

A better example of a buff that is much stronger in context would be the pushback on cl.mp because now it allows Hawks to combo it twice for more damage. They removed the activation range buff on it but that would've made cl.mp a more interesting AA as well.

You realize the effect of this is muted because the Wii U already eliminated most of these people by virtue of being the Wii U right?
As for the second one, I thought about that for a while, but I think the fact that the Wii U will have a higher attach ratio for most of its flagship games due to install base being smaller (compared to Gamecube) will effectively cancel that out.

(with this being said, it would be hilarious if the Wii U version did indeed somehow bomb)

Maybe. I think most people will prefer to play it on console. Smash is much more of a "sit down and play with your friends" kind of games.

Awesome! Congrats Smash!

I picked up Injustice because it was on sale for $7.50 and it's a lot better than I thought it'd be. If the animations were decent, I'd probably enjoy it a lot. It just blows my mind how bad the animations are when people block, though. It's almost like they designed every character independent of the others, so nothing looks right.
I got it for $7.50 as well this week, going to give it a try. The controls seem....not fluid to me, but whatever. See how it goes on the PC.

Especially as AE seems borked.

Then again, Hearthstone season is ending....

I wouldn't say it's muted... I would say it's amplified. Smash being on Wii U PLUS it following after Brawl would both work against it in terms of sales.

Somewhere in the 700s.

So are New Super Mario Bros and Mario Kart, but both did well on 3DS.
Yeah but I'm not sure if their presence on 3DS affected their console sales. I'm not sure who would buy Smash on 3DS and then NOT buy it on console. I will agree that releasing the 3ds version first is a stupid, stupid decision.

I think people may pick up Hawk specifically for the Yun matchup, if they're soft to him on their main.

I don't understand why the NRS community or the anime community jumps the bandwagon so easily. It's not like Namco players go "oh well a new Soul Calibur game is coming out, better quit Tekken to practice for the new SC".

SC and Tekken are older, well established franchises that came into popularity independently of each other. Still, it's not as if SC5 was unaffected by TTT2.

The issue basically is that the base of players who play these games are so small that there aren't enough people to go around and sustain every game. So it ends up being the newest.

Like we talk about anime fighters regarding this. But in Japan, Xrd, BBCP and P4U2 (and UNiB) are all getting played at the exact same time. It's not as if new games have zero effect on what people flock to. It's just they have enough players to where things don't dry up completely.

Hawk will probably really bop Yun with all of his buffs and being a grappler. It'll be really interesting to see if Yun becomes the top-tier but Hawk becomes his major counterpick.
