Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

Man, how much sense would it be to remake Pirate Ship for 3DS?

The 3D and the art style would blend AMAZINGLY.

What number one stage do you guys want your platform of choice and why?

Green Greens is my all-time favorite stage, so I'd love to see that on the 3DS. It's just a well-designed stage: you've got a main platform with two jump-through platforms for good brawling, two side platforms for item chucking, walls of blocks for defense, bomb blocks that require some strategy to use properly, and Whispy Woods to drop some apples and blow people around. The stage hazards are perfect because they make things interesting without taking over the match.

It's a tradition!

It'll be more of a tradition when the remake is announced on Tuesday
I can dream ;_;

All the Smash stuff + Majora's Mask 3D would make this the best E3 ever.

So what do you all think about stickers, should they return or not? I personally loved collecting them and hope they return.

Stickers were a great collectible addition, because it was super easy for them to implement, I assume, since they were just promo art/assets from the nintendo library. That said, their primary function/purpose was to be used for subspace emissary, which is now gone. Who knows!?

I don't recall and haven't been following the Smash news in its entirety I don't think--do we already know what the SP modes of either version will be? If not, it's pretty safe to assume we'll find out on Tuesday, right?

Something tells me they'll just keep Melee stages to 3DS, but who knows?

Anyway, plz Onett. Either platform is fine.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple basic Brawl stages (what few there were, anyway) make it to 3DS. Smashville in particular. It's a perfect neutral stage and iirc one of the few stages usable for Japan's scene. Wii U has Town and City, so 3DS could get Smashville as a returning stage.

Plus it's based on Wild World, the DS entry, and that just makes way too much sense.

Pictochat and Hanenbow could work for similar reasons, though I don't necessarily want to see the latter.

Yep, we got Smashville II so it would make sense if 3DS get Smashville I

Pretty sure 3DS will only get Melee stages while Wii U gets Brawl.

Mostly because Melee stages only had two songs each, which all the 3DS stages have.

I was going to post this 2 days ago, but I got a bit lazy to do a write up and certain things distracted me lol. This is probably the last post about stuff from the Smash Direct, so here goes. Also, I may use ledge and edge interchangeably, so don't mind that.

Ledge Mechanics

Let's talk about simple things we know so far.

Backwards Ledge Grabbing
We know you can grab the ledge even if you're facing away from the ledge.
ibcIByGQJUqTGG.gif

Tether Recovery
We know more than one person can tether the ledge and it will be from a longer distance as well. It isn't clear whether one can tether the ledge even if someone is already there holding on to the ledge.
iEzF65nIyyPlM.jpg

"Pic of the day. Tether recovery? Yes, you can! And from even longer range than before. Multiple fighters can latch on--who actually grabs hold is determined by the same rules as the standard ledge grab."

And now let's go to the big kahuna.

Grabbing the Ledge and Invincibility
iRbzlegbprg6j.jpg

Pic of the day. There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing edges. In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario's grab.

Some other changes include:
-Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge.
-Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage.

Here is the Japanese version, if someone can translate it, it would be great. There could have been something lost in translation since this is a somewhat complicated PotD.

So this is my interpretation of what the pic is showing and what Sakurai means with "Link trumping Mario":
Mario did not have invincibility, so Link was able to take the ledge from him without attacking him. That's it. I think that's also the conclusion other people came to, but I don't remember.

The 100% damage thing is referring to how you would be able to hold on to the ledge for a lesser amount of time when you have 100%+ damage. It would also change your animation (slower ones) for when getting up from the ledge through various ways (attack, jump, & roll). So that's gone in SSB4.

And now onto invincibility.

Note: These are 30fps GIFs of 60fps games and I refer to the 30fps , so keep that in mind when I'm talking about frames. These are most likely inaccurate, but it gives a general idea.

Here is Brawl's ledge invincibility.
iO9jL6qPI4i2E.gif

Frame of the beginning of the ledge grab animation: 15
Frame of the last white flash: 36

So that's 21 frames of invincibility. I haven't looked at frame data extensively for Brawl (or Melee/PM), so I'm not sure about the variances depending on how you grab the ledge or which character you're using.

But that's not the important part. What's important is that we've seen some examples of how long ledge invincibility can last in Smash 4.

iOcuO5orQVtAC.gif

Frame of the beginning of the ledge grab animation: 13
Frame of the last white flash: 61

48 frames of ledge invincibility.

izg6dm1PLzeyS.gif

Frame of the beginning of the ledge grab animation: 31
Frame of the last white flash: 91

60 frames of ledge invincibility.

This is a pretty large difference and we know it has to do with amount of damage and air time. But that's not it. We've seen 0 invincibility as well.

I have no idea why they have no invincibility. Maybe it has something to do with whatever they're using to make the camera angle different and cause it to pan? But it does that in Little Mac's as well. I guess we'll find out eventually.

It is safe to say the edge game is now much more favorable to the player who is recovering and it seems that ledge stalling is going to be ineffective. It is going to be interesting seeing how this turns out.

Also, auto-sweetspot is back it seems. I don't think I've seen a character missing the ledge when using a recovery move and aiming for the ledge.

Phenomenal post. Interesting design choices here.

I've always had a great edge game, but it wasn't something I relied heavily on. I feel like being able to grab onto an edge interchangeably will provide more options though.

I imagine that both versions will have Classic Mode just because it's pretty much expected at this point. I'd also image we'd get Event Mode in both versions too, but with unique events in both versions. I hope that at least one of them (probably the Wii U version) will get an Adventure Mode similar to Melee, but Sakurai saying that there's no "story mode" this time has me worried that Adventure Mode as a whole is dead instead of just a Subspace Emissary style AdvMode.

Really like the effects like the dust kicking up under feet and the moths under the light.

The 3DS also gives some nice lighting too. This will surely be GOTY and the only game I buy this year...

I never seen Yoshi's Story. To YouTube!

^^^^^^^^^Not a good GIF to use at all. But it does look nice in the Smash Direct.

I want WWHD visuals for Toon Link's Wii U stage. Bonus points if it is Ganon's Tower.

They should add more villain related/location stages.

It pretty much captures everything good about the game in a single stage, and the cloud that rotates around can lead to some awesome moments. It's also one of the few tournament legal stages, so it's fun to see something with such a different visual style!

Yeah, two songs make sense.

What are some killer Melee stages? I never had the chance to play that.

Aside from those that returned in Brawl, my favorites were Princess Peach's Castle, Great Bay, Fountain of Dreams, Mute City, Kingdom II, and Poke Floats.

Most of the Melee stages in Brawl were really good picks, too. Big Blue and Jungle Japes are the only ones I'm not particularly fond of.

Thanks for the info! This is a really silly question but I haven't regularly played any Smash in like ten years, so...what is Classic Mode, again? If I remember correctly, at least from reading about Brawl, Event Mode is the one where you do individual stages with themed characters?

Kongo Jungle was great too, that's the first stage I remember seeing, and it played pretty differently because it was so vertical. Plus it had the best music.

Why yes I do:

Troll. Got many 3DS GIFs from the Direct? I've not seen many floating about.

I guess Spirit Train will be the 3DS equivalent of the Pirate Ship.

It has changing locomatives, passing bird carried platforms, front demon trains which assumingly cause some form of disruption to the train. It's extremely varied and looks to be my favourite 3DS stage thus far.

I wonder if the train will begin at full speed or if it departs a station and gradually speeds up?

So what do you all think about stickers, should they return or not? I personally loved collecting them and hope they return.

I hope they have a sticker battle option, where you can battle with your customized fighters. I mean, they've already added custom moves, so why not?

Classic Mode is pretty much Smash's equivalent of "Arcade" mode. Fight against opponents in their stages, also with some special conditions sometimes, like 3 Vs Giant or a large number of opponents lighter than usual, go through some bonus stages between them, and finally fight against Master Hand (with Crazy Hand as a hidden opponent). In Melee, the conditions of each match were set. So, you always fought a giant in the same spot and such. However, the opponent was random, with the stage based on the opponent chosen.

In Brawl, each match had one, or more, "game series" that it covered, and the opponent and stage was chosen based on that. The modifiers were random. For example, the first stage was always Zelda themed, which meant fighting in the Twilight Princess or Wind Waker stages, against Link, Toon Link, Zelda or Ganondorf. The conditions were random too, so, aside from a 1 vs 1 battle, you could get matches like player and Link vs Ganondorf and Zelda. The second stage could be either Yoshi or Donkey Kong themed, following the same pattern (in the case of team matches, characters from the available series in that spot fill the team), although the stage matches each series there (so, if you got a simple player vs Yoshi, you'd only fight in the Yoshi stage).

Event mode are preset matches with special conditions, some don't let you choose your character, others allow that. The special conditions aren't just opponent modifiers like in Classic Mode, and can involve things like time limits or only being able to hurt the opponent doing certain things (like with Pokeballs). Everything else is always predetermined there- stage, opponents, etc. Brawl also had Co-op events which was a separate list from the single player ones.

Not sure how it is trolling, I posted nicer GIFs. The ones I just posted don't look downgraded compared to the source like the Jungle Japes one. I should know, I'm the one who made them modifying the settings lol. :p

As for 3DS GIFs, there are these, but some are a bit grainy:

There aren't many for 3DS because there is very little footage and the Wii U version is the better looking version.

Sorry for the embedded GIFs to everyone else, I know some are very annoyed by too many GIFs on a page.
This may be the Mario main in me talking, but Mario's fireballs look fan-freaking-tastic in this game.
They definitely do. Dat black smoke.

We both :/

Speaking of 3DS, what do you think the Mother stage will be for this version? I am not sure if the 3DS can handle a stage like New Pork City.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write all this out! I really appreciate the info.

For the Wii U, I would like a Metroidvania mode where you can go by different zone srepresenting different games with their respective enemies and bosses. Would be so cool.

Those would count as old information, unless they said something about how they work

If the trophy deconfirms an important or popular character, I lose. "Important characters" would include major heroes, villains, and recurring characters such as Tingle and Anna (Fire Emblem). If the trophy deconfirms a possible item, I lose.

I'm scared. ;_; Since I know they are more likely to re-announce the items that are shown in press kits.

You still have a pretty good chance of winning if you take it. Keep in mind that you would win if the pic is:

A new mode or feature
Details on modes
A new stage
Details on how a stage plays
A new Item
Information on old Items
A new veteran
More details on a character
New details on a move
new mechanics
changes to old mechanics
Trophies that deconfirm an important/popular character or deconfirm an item or stage.

I would only win if the pic is.

A Character or group of characters standing around
A pointless picture of an old stage
It's a minor trophy.

New Pork City would work well on the 3DS, actually, I think. The city being made of billboards would make it look interesting in 3D.
I'd be upset, however, if the only large stage on the 3DS was a port.

I'm scared that Sakurai would screw me over so I think I'm going to bail out on this. Troubled_Bat , you are welcome to take this.
