They likely attempted to verify this with Sony, but got no response as it's a fucking Saturday night. Naturally in this era on the internet, where being first is what's most important, they ran with it.

Basically, should they have put a rumor/report tag on it? Absolutely. But folks in here gotta chill. Honestly, it still would not surprise me to see The Last Guardian either cancelled or damn near cancellation. Bullocks to what Rohdes says.
