Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

What'd you guys think of Nintendo's E3 last year?

I thought it was pretty solid---especially in retrospect.

During it, I was the most excited for Smash and Pokemon...Smash actually let me down a bit (since Brawl had like five new characters, Smash 4 seemed a bit tamer with just Villager, WFT, and Mega Man), and didn't have that oooomph! I got more hyped once the POTDs started getting good and we got Rosalina, Little Mac, and such, but here's hoping this year Smash goes all out.

Pokemon had some cool new Pokemon, and Fairy finally, and I was really hyped. XY weren't bad, but sort of didn't live up to how cool it seemed back at E3. But looking forward to ORAS.

But I found it interesting how their other big games, ALBW, 3D World, Tropical Freeze, and 3D World, all had rather small showings. I actually think it was clever of Nintendo to go with more basic trailers showing the early world areas as opposed to hyping them up, it really made the following Directs that focused on them that much better and in the end, I felt all four of those games easily turned into great titles.

Nintendo's one of the few game publishers I think where most of their games improve as we learn more about them, Twilight Princess non-withstanding (and even then I still like that game).

EDIT: And I saw this on /v/:

I'm so tempted to just blow off all my tuesday plans so I don't miss the digital event or the treehouse :o

E3's been pretty decent so far, so i'm hoping Ninty's contribution with be that juicy cherry to top it all off :3

By the way, any word yet if Pit will be voiced by the Uprising dude? That guy was AMAZING, and I can't see anyone else pulling it off.

Really hope they get Shulk's VA back too if he's in, although I wonder if that might be more difficult since I imagine Smash is localized in America.

I'm positive he did confirm it, but I don't remember when or where. I think it was in a YT video or something.

So you think Smash will be cancelled, existing footage deleted and we'll only get the "it's still in development" once a year even though that's CLEARLY a lie?

Man I can't imagine the meltdowns, but I wouldn't remember them anyways.

Since Nintendo aren't some pussies like Sony none of us would live to tell the story. Nintendo Ninjas would kill everyone who knows about SSB4 before cancelling it and then proceed to brainwash the public

I'm talking more about the general air of disappointment, defeat, depression and betrayal in that thread, but yeah, I could totally see something like this happening.
...no, no, I'm not that cynical.

If Nintendo plays their cards right, they've got this year's E3 in the bag. All they've got to do is:
1. Take notes from Microsoft and keep the unhype things short.
2. Blow everyone away with Zelda U and revive at least one of the franchises people are begging for
3. Smash... All day long.

Smash invitational alone will be pure hype.
Fill the whole theatre. That whole front row full of cosplayers. Oh man.

Hmm, random recollections about Nintendo's E3 2013, in no particular order:

- I remember being impressed by how crisp, clear, and nicely textured 3D World looked. Seeing the quartet from SMB2 playable once again got a fist-pump fro me, followed by a second fist-pump for the return of Chargin' Chuck.

- I remember being BLOWN AWAY by how amazing Mario Kart 8 looked. Btw, I still stand by my "poetry in motion," "Sistine Chapel of Avatar x Mona Lisa" assessment.

- Tropical Freeze was an extremely satisfying reveal, since I had just finished DKCR3D and was totally hankering for a second adventure. The Snowmads also looked like promising new villains.

- The theme song for X was really nice. And the colors... The colors!!

- Bayonetta 2 was amazing, starting with the spiffy new haircut and culminating in hot monster-on-monster action.

- Pokémon XY had some great reveals, like the Fairy type, of course, but also lovely new creatures like Noivern.

- Smash Bros. was kind of a downer, at first. Sure, Mega Man was extremely hype. And Villager and all the others looked good. But compared to the five unveiled at E3 2006, it was low-impact. Or so I thought. Then I log back on later that afternoon and see Wii Fit Trainer has been announced. Such a fresh and exciting reveal that rejuvenated my faith that Sakurai wasn't out of interesting character ideas and was still perfectly capable of exciting us.

Probably forgetting something, but yeah, it was a great E3. :-)
