Any ideas on the Venom Snake/Punished Snake thing?

How many nicknames can one guy have.

Don't forget Saladin.

Ugh, it never ends. And I swear if the whole Moby Dick motif is still a thing and Kiefer goes "Call me Ishmael" I'm gonna pop a blood vessel or something. Kojima just playing the long game on trolling at that point!

What makes you think that? During GZ she told Kaz that whatever needs to be done about Chico, she'd understand (walk to the rear of the outer fence of the old prison area, under the shack by the port-potties).

Because Venom looks surprised briefly when he sees the red scope on him, but upon looking up and at who is in the chopper it seems that he smiles/smirks/recognizes who it is aiming at him. That's my hunch anyway... (and pause it when it zooms in to the soldier aiming, and you can get a sense that the soldiers eyes are feminine; kinda like Meryl's in MGS1.

Dat shot.

Just... man... I'm not entirely convinced of the Fox Engine for everything; but no doubt it got lighting down wonderfully.

Did they give a release date today for The Phantom Pain?

Please don't say 2015, please don't say 2015 - everything good isn't coming till 2015... :(

I'll pause it there next time I'm on my PC. I should go through the trailer frame by frame.

This might be Kojima's last MGS game (again). But if he decides to run with this, he can easily remake Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 in Fox engine and possibly do as someone else mentioned by having an alternate universe where things played out differently, kind of like a clean slate.

But I think Kojima may be serious this time. He said he feels restricted in the story because of the previous baggage. I think he hinted at wanting to do something completely new. Konami putting to bed the cash cow that is Metal Gear doesn't seem likely though.

It would be interesting to see what a mix of Kojima having a brand new story without canon baggage along with the power of Fox engine can produce.

That dithering though.

Remember, this is still only a first gen PS4 title and probably took a graphical hit to ship on last gen consoles. Metal Gear games have a track record of being some of the best looking games especially a few years into a console cycle. MGS 3 Snake Eater comes to mind. I remember noticing the gfx being the best I've ever seen on a PS2 title.

As they tweak and update Fox engine throughout this console's life cyle and drop off the last-gen baggage, the dithering and other issues could go away. I'd really like to see what a Metal Gear game that is only current gen would look like in 2 or 3 years.

Kojima is such a genius. Who else could think of putting Venom and Snake together? He's really thinking outside the box on TPP.

new screens and trailer are incredible though. Day one, obviously

Looks like we have our box art. Nice! Seems like marketing didn't like it though haha. I wonder why he put Ocelot on the cover?

Ocelot is Chico, who is, in turn, Quiet, the heroine of MGSV!
I love the cover art, it's beautiful. Subtle, yet still packs a lot of style! You know?

I wonder if anyone has any idea on what the first actual mission/section of the game will actually be?

Ground Zeroes. >_>

No, but really - I'm hoping the game opens up with Big Boss coming out of the coma, followed up by the general confusion of just wtf is happening. Sure, we have the trailers to build some kind of timeline/plot out of - but we still don't really know what was up with the ones that gave us a glimpse into that facility being attacked while he struggles to move around.

I wonder if MGS on Xbox One will gain any improvements after the new June SDK update? Destiny apparently got better resolution so why not this too?

Forgive my ignorance, who's the person on the far right?

So I guess they will fix the retcon by saying Big Shell in MGS2 was not only a Solid Snake Simulator but also Mother Base Simulator? I don't know.

I think they say in MGS4 that the Patriot AI can't think of original ideas themselves as they are merely programmes, so when they set up situations they constantly recycle them. This was obviously a meta-dig at the series, but it was also an explicit plot point as MGS4 was meant to be about breaking the cycle. This is also a great narrative explanation as to why so many games in the series have similar milestones or motifs like the One Big Boss and One Snake thing.

I reckon this is going to be the entry where the AI proper are introduced (their precursors/prototypes are in introduced in PW), so this is a nifty bit of foreshadowing of the future. When the AI develop a testing ground for the SSS programme that is meant to recall the various places proclaimed Outer Heaven in the past, they reuse similar assets that Big Boss used for Mother Base because that's all the AI knows how to do.

That's my take on it.

Calling it. There will be MGS2 Deja Vu mission.

Good call. If the other map is really an African jungle, can we expect a MGS3 Deja Vu Mission....?

Was there talk about Skullface at the end with Big Boss/Punished Snake/Venom Snake, and with a big ol’ eyepatch as well? Man, nobody’s eyes are safe from Hideo Kojima.

I just don’t know what to expect anymore. There is just too much happening in everything I see about The Phantom Pain. I love it.

I gotta say it was weird hearing Kiefer Sutherland saying those almost poetic Kojima-isms about diamonds and ashes and Diamond Dogs. Almost too hard to take in. Somehow as the graphics get more real and the tone gets more serious, the more surreal it gets for me. I had no trouble taking it all in during Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3 with David Hayter laying down the philosophical bombs.

Or maybe Sutherland just isn’t doing it for me still. Oh well.
