Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

After watching the Giant Bomb unfinished video, I got more excited than I was before. It looks real good.
Same here. It seems that PR lately for many games have been stepping on their own feet. That Giant Bomb podcast did more to make me interested in this game than all the the presentations I've seen.

The odd thing about that is that they were showing basically the same content and information. I think that might be because it is harder to view yourself playing when you are presented with a highly scripted demo rather than real gameplay. Watching them figure this out, and mess up made the game feel real for the first time.

I'm surprised how badly a job Bungie have done marketing this game cause 18 minutes of the Giantbomb demo has sold me.

EDIT: ^^ God damnit, Horizon lol

I got that too! A real feeling of being a new player and messing things up. Also checking out the menu stuff and asking odd questions about the world. Between the overworld stuff and the strike stuff, they did a much better job at showing off what Destiny is all about without really scratching the surface.

I pre-ordered so I'll get the beta eventually but I really really hope I get alpha access. This is a title I can't wait to get my hands on.

Maybe they are busy trying to under-promise and over-deliver.
Or perhaps parts of it are still being solved as they go along. Its extremely ambitious what they are trying to do having spent some time with it. It does feel like a big mixture of games, it does feel familiar and fresh at the same time.

I'd say the presentation of everything is possibly the best I've ever seen. Its very thought out. Some things will confuse and turn off some people, but I see alot there to like. It is hitting on a slightly different audience then their usual I think.

I'm actually finding it more relaxing and enjoyable then balls to the walls pulse-pounding. Hard to describe.

Oh have a couple minutes to kill till officially off. I wanted to warn possible future alpha players. Right now there is a bug you will want to watch out for on strikes. At the defend part where your ghost has to shut down the lasers you can lose voice in your fireteam in game. They can hear you but you can't hear them. As a result when doing a strike I'd suggest using party chat. Bungie are aware of this bug.

Huh? Under promise over deliver? Their first vidoc was like them jizzing about how sweet the game. I'm with the dude you quoted. This new footage has me sold, but before I was skeptical about it all. Hope I get into alpha.

A few questions for those in the know/Alpha:

1) How do the weapons feel? I'm super excited about Destiny but.. none of the weapons seem to be doing it for me from what I can see in videos. They don't seem to have the same character or satisfaction -looking at videos of course- as Halo weapons did.

2) Any footage/pictures out there of different spaceships ships/vehicle mounts? I see they're purchasable in the store but I'm not sure if that means the content is even in the alpha. Unlockable/purchasable spaceships has been something that got leaked/revealed a long time ago and we've heard pretty much nothing since. I would just like some photographic evidence!

3) Do we have a definitive answer on transferring 360 saves to PS4 yet? Last I heard it's something they were looking into and.. if you can via bungie.net it would save me a shit ton of money in the fall before I feel there are enough games to justify an X1/PS4 purchase.

It really depends on the weapon, some weapons which may be the exact same, like both are scout weapons, will have different stats. One of the starts makes the enemy stagger more when they're shot, other starts like like recoil, rate of fire, damage ect all change how the weapon functions. So you really need to find what works for you.

sadly the spaceships as of right now are usually just seen from space, they do look different, some look awesome, and i wish i could buy action figures of them, other are a bit more generic, but they're all really cool looking. They're mostly their to show off, the shrikes/sparrows are different, some have more durability, some have sweet little juking maneuvers they can do, some stop better or have higher boost.

from what we know, bungie has the infrastructure set up, it'll be up to microsoft and sony to allow the save transferring to happen.

How important is ADS ? From the videos it looks more like CoD, so it is a must to ADS. I wanted it to be more like Halo, where you can railshoot more :(

What are your impressions `?

How many weapons do you cary ? Can you change loadout or do you pick up weapons ?

Yeah I think that's fair. But we are still a ways out, I don't really see the urgency other then typical gamer, me me me stuff

You can inventory a ton of weapons, but you only have 3 equipped at a time (Primary / Secondary / Heavy). You'll have to go back into the menu and swap them around which you can't really do while actively in combat.

ADS is important for the semi auto rifles, not so much for the shotguns and charge rifles. It's second nature. That aspect feels like some hybrid of COD and Halo. People will need to let some of their Halo tendencies go for sure.

ADS you don't have to do. It's there but I never find myself forced to use it. Is it helpful? Hell yea but I could see someone playing without it if they wanted to.

It's hard to explain. You can carry 3 weapon types actively. However the way loot storage it handled you could have 9 other of each weapon in your storage. I tend to roll for example with a pulse rfile and an auto rifle for my main. A shotgun and a fusion rifle for my special and a chaingun and a rocket launcher for my heavy. Now keep in mind you have to go into the start menu to equip a different weapon of that slot type so there is a huge penalty for that if you are surrounded by AI or in multiplayer. Now off to home to play and stream.

Character creation video please. Also, how close to Cortana can you make your character?

Everytime I see this it gets me excited for customization.

I must say, watching Ninja's stream and seeing the custom characters roaming around is piquing my interest.

Thanks for this thread. Will keep an eye on it.

I'm watching the GB video right now, and I'm not exactly impressed with the graphics or the gameplay. Hmmm.

The graphics are stunning. The art direction here is top-notch. It's not going to best a corridor shooter with 10 or less characters on screen, but its shooting for typical bungie scale and succeeding

Are you sure? I was watching Ninja's stream earlier and when he was using the sniper rifle, I noticed the reticle stayed bloomed all the time.

thank you guys. So you all think it is a Halo CoD hybrid ? On which site is it leaning more ? Or do you not want to make these comparisions ?

I'm predicting plenty, because there really isn't much they can do with the other planets in the Solar System.

I think you are very wrong about that. All planets have been terraformed and colonized.

The shooting is probably more Halo all in all. I think since it takes more hits to take down the enemies and the movement is still very Halo it will strike more chords there.

so health is more Haloish ? eurogamer said you cant react at all and die instantly ? (CoD)

All of the habitable planets, like Mars, Venus and a few of the moons, including Lunar. They would need to do Space Station like locations for Jupiter and Saturn, and I don't know how the outer planets could be considered colonizable.

Not seeing it. I am into the wide scope of the game though. Hopefully I get in the alpha and it sways me.

And it has that Bungie FOV.

I'm sure there will be more earth all said and done since the tower is there, but the way the whole game centers around traveling around in your space ship, you'll start to get the feeling earth is only a small part of this one. It's very hard to explain

I wouldn't say you die instant in MP at all. Maybe if someone does there super but that's about it.

Yeah I'm finding dying to super's to feel very cheap to me. Though they aren't as frequent, yet.

Titan smash thing feels like the win-button. Not a fan at all.

it depends on your class i find. Titans have a higher armor and base health, hunters rely on their agility to avoid damage, and warlocks recover health faster. If you have better armor you dont die as fast, and right now things aren't fully balanced, but after playing for a while it's a nice mix.
