No, not fighting is always the best strategy for 4 player free for alls in smash. If you're not fighting you're not taking damage while other people are.

She actively avoided fighting the entire match and was not fun to see.

It's up to the players to be aware and go after people who are trying to avoid combat. That's part of the strategy. It's not a problem if they're not smart enough to notice it. 3 people rushing down someone trying to sit out = Hilarity ensues.
