On my way to my Best Buy in Buckhead again...I should be able to play the Wii U version this time around, they gave us "fast passes" on Wednesday when we couldn't play it after 9!

I'm trying Olimar first btw

Can someone here please confirm you're guaranteed a gold coin if you preorder today at the culver city location? It'd really help -- cause the drive is sort of long.

The Wii U pro controller is such piss. It wasn't fun to play Smash when the first two matches I was trying to get used to tiny little face buttons beneath the control stick. I'm definitely playing with a GameCube controller at launch. Just yuck.

was planning to go but my wife is sick so i'm staying home to take care of her...if anyone has some duplicate stickers or cute swag and is feeling generous please let me know....

I completely forgot about the event today and I just walked into BB to look at some Blu-rays. Bad bad bad idea. Good lawd the hype is real. There was about 1/4 of the store blocked off at one point, and this is a small town.

Also, using earphones on the 3DS demo, I can tell that Sonic's side taunt was ruined: The animation's the same, but it's not "You're too slow!" anymore! It's
"Sonic Speed!"
THIS IS THE MOST DISAPPOINTING NEWS SO FAR

I am genuinely heartbroken.

You drove all the way to the woodlands? I was not going to drive that far. <<

No. I'm not in Houston.

The 3DS version is amazing. Silky smooth with great 3D, very easy to pick up, doesn't feel limited by 3DS controls. I love it. Can't wait till October.

Villager reminds me of a mix of Snake and Dedede. Very unusual, unpredictable attacks that have to be set up. I love him.

After an hour and a 1/2 wait in Mira Mesa CA, I got to try both versions today, one match per platform.

It felt odd playing the 3DS one but adapted to the controls shortly. Framerate is very fluent and the 3d itself is great. Used Pikachu and it plays almost the same as Brawl, as far as I know, except for its revamped Thunder (Down B).

Moved onto Wii U and used Villager. Feeling how different he was as an actual fighter, it took some getting used to, which didn't help because of a two minute match. Interestingly enough, he can ride that gyroid thing (side B) when you hold B. Down B was weird though because you apparently have to do that a few times to make the tree grow and eventually cut it down.

Was actually patient and kept a safe distance, picking off my opponents, and managed to win both matches.

Pre ordered both versions but they ran out of the bundle one with the GC controller.

Short as they were, the demos were well worth the wait.

Why isn't it October yet? ;_;

EDIT: only swag they had left was a Disney Magical World calender.

Cross posting from the SSB thread:

Just played at Best Buy. I got to play both 3DS and Wii U.

I played 3DS first, I have to say GOT DAYUM, that frame rate. The 60 FPS was confirmed in the direct obviously, but man it was impressive to see. I played Mega Man and it was a timed match against an AI. It was on the NSMB stage, which was pretty cool, and there seems to be some coin collecting aspect to it. The game handled well. Circle Pad was easy to do Smash attacks with. October 3 can't come and sooner.

On Wii U I played Wii Fit Trainer. Doing the deep breathing took some getting used to, as I screwed it up on the first few attempts. Her arsenal is really cool though. Her Up+B gives more lift than I thought it did.

As for the physics, I thought it felt like a middle ground of Melee and Brawl. I actually killed the Brawl air dodges (despite that they prevent wave dashing).

They had everyone playing on Pro Controllers, and that felt great.

The game is great and I can't wait for both versions.
As for swag they had SSB buttons and SM3DW stickers.

Got back from Day 2 at the Buckhead Best Buy in Atlanta a while ago. Thank goodness they thought ahead and had the fast line!

I played two matches: One with Olimar and another with Samus.

Olimar: Unfortunately he's been nerfed a good bit mainly his up smash :( but there is some room to still be good with him imo. His recovery is MUCH better than just that shitty pikmin chain. Also it only took me a few seconds to get used to having three pikmin in a set order. It'll be easier to manage as well. He has a new uair which I'll have to get used to as well. When the game comes out I'll still give him a fair try and make him one of my mains again.

Samus: Ok, even though I was playing awkwardly with the Pro Controller Samus is actually decent in this build. A lot of her moves have some decent knockback and I actually like her grapple beam again lol. One thing I noticed about her fair when I did it to someone was that it brought the person down with the attack and they bounced off the ground a little bit so I follow up with a fsmash. Really nifty. Also her new nair makes her able to zone a bit better in FFA.

The game itself: We know, it's based on Brawl's engine. Yes, it is a modified, faster version of it with tripping gone and some hitstun at highter percentages. Only thing is the lag. Lag after using aerial moves and lag after performing grabs needs to be toned down a lot. I like that it's added back since being kinda absent in Brawl. Everything else to me is fine.

I feel overall this game can bring a lot of Smash players together to further the Smash community. It seems to be more competitive oriented than Brawl does. Each character does seem like they can bring some sort of playstyle that can be good. I'm looking forward to the remaining months until the game comes out!

I was at the Buckhead one too earlier today. Got there at maybe 10:30am so only one group was in front of my group, which was nice (they even fed us chocolate!). I played Bowser on my first match, and really like what was done to him. Sooooo much potential now, but too bad I was poopy with the controls. Second match, I chose random and ended up with villager. Can't say much on him because that was entirely new to me. Got 4th place twice, but glad I got the chance to play.

Walked out with DK tropical freeze for $30, too. Sorry if I really did get the last one to anyone who came out to Buckhead! :(

Yeah! the controller is really awkward and even with two 2 minute matches I really didn't get accustomed to them. I felt the Samus buffs, but couldn't execute them well.

Ah well! When's "Holiday 2014" so the Wii U version can come out already?!?!

I went to Best Buy after they had stopped letting people get in line (around 5:00), but the last group to play on Wii U only had three players, so they let me in. :)

I used Marth on 3DS against a Level 3 Samus (forgot to change her level, whoops. Marth's Fair has been super nerfed. I dunno what people are saying about his Dair, though. Easy as crap to spike with and pretty powerful. I got like three on Samus in a 2 minute match (low level AI, granted. On Wii U, I played Villager and Little Mac. Villager's Down B is so cute. I thought it was just a really long attack, but it takes multiple steps to plant, water, and chop the tree - neat! Little Mac is mostly what I expected. Giga Mac rules. I was very satisfied overall. It doesn't seem to have much control clunk at all. A potential problem I see is moves don't really flow into each other, but I'm sure we'll figure combos out when we have it in our hands.

So Montreal-resident here. Our demo was in french and the Wii Fit Trainer was called Entraineuse Wii Fit even when using the male costume. I'll be interested in seeing if that gets fixed lol.

Just got back from Best Buy in Farmers Branch, TX at 635 and Midway. Got to play two 2 minute rounds with 4-players. Lost the first match as the Male Wii Fit Trainer on the Pilot Wings Resort Stage, but won the 2nd match with Link on the New Super Mario Bros U stage. Everyone was playing with the Pro controller. They also had a Wii set up in the back of the line with Wavebirds that has Project M installed. Two or three guys were walking around the line with two 3DS attached to their belt that had Smash Bros on them.

Kudos to everyone who took the time to write up detailed impressions of Super Smash Bros. 4 in this thread. They've been great to read.

I'll have to wait until October for my Smash fix, but overall I like what I've seen and read about both versions.

damn, i really wish the Nintendo Store in Melbourne, Australia would get in a Smash demo :/ they've got heaps of demo units set up, but no Smash.

I played some smash bros wiiu at the best buy in the North side of Edmonton alberta that was holding the event. There were a lot more people in the line compared to the mario kart 8 demo. There were about 60-70 people in the line when I got there. Someone actually got killed once in sudden death in the demo by not even touching the controller. They thought the game was over, but the other person who was playing as greninja moved behind him and killed him while the person he was using was standing still. I did okay, but not amazing because I suck at using the wiiu pro controller for this game.People picked mega man, greninja and little mac a lot. A couple of people went crazy when mega man got his final smash and etc.

The demo actually crashed once to. I don't know how.

I also preordered the game.

I went to the Smash Fest at the Buckhead Atlanta, GA Best Buy and it was awesome. We got there around 3PM on Wednesday and started playing the WiiU version at 7PM. The line was out the door at that time, so I know most people didn't get to play. While in-line, I got to play a couple matches on the 3DS version. Overall, I had a blast. Got 80ish street passes, exchanged information with fellow gamers, talked about games, etc. Got to play the game and get some cool swag. I tried Mega Man, Lil Mac, and Greninja. I sucked with Greninja but did great with Mega Man. I went to the Best Buy Nintendo event last year as well... hopefully they keep this going every year.

I'm in that pano shot, haha.
Got my coupons and was able to buy Donkey Kong TF and Mario 3D World for $56 total.

Was all I wanted.

Thanks for the impressions that y'all have been typing for this thread. Hopefully we would get more videos and impressions from people tomorrow.

Nice! You need to come over to the DFW Topic in the OT side. We're trying to organize a get together at D&B on a weekend this month to play Mario Kart Arcade GP DX!

As for my own impressions on Smash Bros, I found the Pro Controller very difficult to use. It really felt like the buttons were not mapped to to locations the instructions said they were. I would be pressing A to jump or hit, but something else would happen instead. I was also not a fan of the duel joystick combo controllers. I mean, I won at least one of the two matches, but I think it was pure luck rather than skills on my part. I know I'm going to be playing with the GameCube controller when I get it, but hopefully it was just a combination of the demo, the lack of playing around with the controls, and excitement that made this difficult and not an indication of the game's actual difficulty to control.

Only one Best Buy in my area, and dat line.....NOPE.

Oh well. I'll settle for some detailed impressions here.

Samus: Ok, even though I was playing awkwardly with the Pro Controller Samus is actually decent in this build. A lot of her moves have some decent knockback and I actually like her grapple beam again lol. Nice, nice. A possible non-shitty Samus is music to my ears.

A shame to see so many negative impressions about the Pro Controller though. I only have one fully functioning GameCube controller left after playing Melee so much with friends and family. Was planning on using the Pro, but I might just have to get more Gcube ones instead.

waited four hours!

would've high-tailed it if I'd been alone, but there were three of us there... the unspoken consensus was we're enduring this. :lol

as for impressions, the Wii U game was awesome. 3DS version was... weird. the controls were kind of unresponsive and it just didn't feel that great overall. I'm sure the problems will be gone by release, and it'll take some getting used to playing Smash Bros. on a handheld with a circle pad.
