Destiny Alpha - This Thursday only on PS4

Speak to me about :

Competitive MP. How does it work? Is it 3 v 3? Load outs? Abilities in it? map size? How long to get into matches? Map voting ? Do you use your equipment/loot in competitive?

SPILL DA BEANS

the only mode available is 6v6/4v4, you have access to your supers and weapons, the map size varies (one mid-short range map on earth, another mid-long range map on the moon with vehicles). A nice thing is that all your weapons are available (and your sparrow/shrike), so if you're not stuck to using one loadout. If you're not doing well with a sniper rifle and scout rifle, try using a hand cannon and fusion rifle and play closer range. The downside is that secondary ammo is lost if you change your weapon, so you're going to be forced into looting it from the map, these places usually act as magnets for combat so it's a nice little system. The same goes for heavy weapons.

Supers are in it, but you dont start with your super, you have to build it up with objectives and kills, meaning the more team oriented you play the more you use the super and the better your score. The time to get into matches varies, the alpha is a small so it's not a great indication.

So I started the game like most everyone else who has seen Destiny media. Confused what the game is, how it works, what's the point. I've had the Alpha since last week and after maxing out the level cap in place (8) I've got a much better grasp on the game.

It is like Borderlands. That much is obvious from the trailers. This is not a bad thing. I played Old Russia, Crucible (MP) , and the Strike Mission.

Before all of this you create your character as we've seen and you're off to Old Russia. This is the starting point in the Alpha. From here you are free to start your mission. A way point is placed on your map and you can begin. Or you can explofe. This is what I did and in doing so met up with other players. None of us were in a party , but i saw them fighting enemies and I invited myself to join.

When you run into someone you CAN invite them to join your Fireteam or you can kill some guys with them and go about your business. I went about my business for the most part .

As you complete your missions you'll get XP and upgrades. These are pretty self explanatory. Every now and then a community event will be triggered and if you shoot the enemy on screen you'll participate. From here other players do the same and you join in to take down whatever is presented to you. I found these to be really fun and pretty tough in the beginning. These bring players together and work really well.

Once you've had your fill you can go to "orbit" and head to the town area to upgrade and get new missions. Here you'll see other players again running around doing whatever. This part felt PSOish. For the most part you upgrade what you like, get some missions, and head back to playing. Had no problem with this.

The Strike Mission (Devils Lair)forces you to go in as a party of 3 with a minimum level of 6. This was a lot more difficult than the Old Russia missions. I got matched up with 2 random people and had a good time. We used team work despite none of us having mics. We revived when others were down. Bounced our respective skill sets off of each other. It was great. I imagine it's even more fun with people you know. I found the AI to be tougher/better during this mission as well.

The shooting feels good to me. The gun sounds have some punch to them. The graphics, especially the lighting, are really well done. You can't really tell from the streams, but the game looks really good. it's definitely one of the better looking games on PS4.

Crucible (Competitive MP) is 6v6 Territories. Your supers and everything you've obtained from the SP is available here. For the most part OT was ok. Close quarter weapons are way too powerful at the moment, and I'm not sure having Supers available in this mode is the best idea. It had its moments, but I preferred the other modes in the Alpha.

So yeah...I feel like you guys need to play it. Once you do it'll click and I think people will generally like what they see. If you liked Borderlands then you'll probably like this. Same addictive formula but with Bungies touch and direction.

Just from watching the stream for 20 minutes I've learned a lot more about the game than from all the promo videos and whatever else. It now actually looks somewhat interesting to me, which is more than I could say half an hour ago.

old russia is BIG btw, like really big, if there are another 6 planets (rumored are moon, mars, venus, mercury, europa, earth) then there is going to be a massive amount of content to go through.

Gonna try to take a devil walker down on my own in my stream if you want to see me die over and over again.

Did you do the Devils Lair Strike Mission. That was pretty rough.

Thanks Smokey, sounds like what I was hoping it would shape up to be thus far. I know I have access to beta, just hope I get into the Alpha for the weekend.

From vids, it seems like it may "feel" (movement wise) like the old Halo games. This about right?

Just curious... install size on this?

I think it's 6GB?

About the feel ..it's weird since this the first Bungie game with a Dual Shock. After I got used to that it felt good. Maybe a little more "floaty"? That might be because I am a Warlock though and they have a good ability when you jump.

you can get to the devil walker space (of the strike mission) as part of open world old russia by yourself. If you want a challenge, taking out the walker on your own is a pain, I ran out of ammo twice.

Anyone who did the e3 experience, when you entered your code on the site did you get any sort of confirmation email?

Kinda worried I screwed up my email entry.

I'm assuming this thread will instantly go to the top of GAF when we get the theater codes and can download it?

Not an actual email. I believe they were sending those out tomorrow.

I really want to play this right now. Does anyone know how many people they're letting into the alpha? I'm afraid I signed up too late.

I didn't realize I was only registering for a chance to play the alpha. I think they kind of skipped over that part when they announced it on stage.

My theory is that because they gave it out to the people who came to the movie theater screenings, they put the word "chance" in so it would seem more valuable.

I have my fingers crossed everyone can get in for at least a day or so.

Is the registration closed or something? The page is still up, but I get an "PSN IDs entered do not match - please try again." error message even though my ID and password work perfectly fine for logging onto PSN and the PSN webstore..

Don't tell me this is US only?

Mmmm. Thank you for the impressions. That sounds super fun.

Looks infinitely more interesting than any other shooter in the past long while. Glad to see Bungie has really been working hard and getting a rich experience together.

Watching people play on twitch has made me far more interested in this game than any press so far has. Here's hoping I get in the Alpha.

Ok. That multiplayer gameplay trailer has single handedly stopped me from purchasing an Xbox one for the halo bundle.

It looks incredible.
