This is my most anticipated game, like ever. I absolutely can't wait for Bloodborne. Only small request is that there is armor customization, that's like my favourite part of Dark Souls.

Servers are still up! I played the game recently while waiting for Project Beast, and I got invaded twice (Once at the Old Monk) while staying in human form the entire time. You could easily get some PvP going in the Shrine of Storms like the old days.

Latria left me so depressed that I just couldn't play that level anymore so I stopped playing DS for like 4 months. Then I understood...then I understood that the depression that place oozes is just another challenge of the game designed to make us give up. So I grew my beard, I manned up, I killed a fucking chicken and drank it's blood, then I came back to DS and beat that motherfucking level and the rest of the game.
Challenge accepted Miyazaki...challenge accepted.

Ambient sounds is one of my favs things about Dark Souls, and Oolacile Township is one of the best in that regards. As you said, not only the screams of the bloated heads going insane even at offscreen, but also the general ambient and ocassional screams you hear when you let your character standby and simply hear... its amazing. Its ads so much at the mood (and it seems like Latria has an excess of "mood" lol).
