DRIVECLUB gets actual weather effects, screenshots inside

LOL

I was gonna say it looks like NFS but the colors do look very Ridge Racer. I do give the game props for being open world but that's about the only thing it has over Driveclub (which is not what Evolution was going for anyway).

The thing with Driveclub is that unlike a lot of other track or circuit based racers, the environment is 100% 3D modeled by Evolution. They didn't just throw in a 2D backdrop, a skybox, and some trackside detail and call it a day. The care and attention they've shown to things outside of the cars really impresses me, and I hope this engine and all this work doesn't just end with Driveclub. It would be a great shame if this engine isn't used in other games.

Agreed, which is why I'll never understand the "60fps or die" arguments. The game looks so good, and it's probably going to be the first racing game I'll enjoy in a long time.

I'm with you on the sound, too. Sony just needs to say "Yo, Evo, be a nice guy and give PD your sound files"

Apparently, their sound recordings were so accurate that some of the car manufacturers asked for copies to replace their existing library.

They actually hinted that it will form the basis for their next games during the GameSpot interview, I think.

Agreed.

The engine should be even further optimized for their next game. I watched an interview yesterday, can't remember if it was during the GameSpot stream, but Rushy was talking about it. With the obsessive detail they've been able to pull off in Driveclub, I can't see them starting over.

Also...

Well it's different to say it doesn't belong in the same generation, that's just hyperbole.

Don't know what people get out of coming into every Driveclub thread to make comparison to Forza (vice versa as well), but if you insist.

The games do not look comparable. Forza Horizon 2 is an incredible looking game, and having played through the first, I have no doubt that the game will be amazing when it comes out. But people need to stop denying what is quite evident to the eyes.

This comparison really does prove how far apart the two games are. Not even in the same league, honestly.

Both look good to me but I would say that there is a generational gap between the two of them technically. The way that Forza handles things like lighting, weather, textures, environment, etc feels much like it did in the older games whereas Evolution are doing it in a way that just wasn't possible previously and it creates a genuine sense of being in a real place that is all to often missing in driving games. There's a certain honesty about the atmosphere of this game on a technical level, almost like you're driving in places rather than just levels.

Can't comment on the handling model though,

I wonder how long the "shortly after" weather patch will be released? As much as I want this game I'm half tempted to wait for the weather before I start playing it.

I will wait to see it with my eyes because people were raving about forza 5 and posting good looking gifs, then I played the game. Talk about disappointment. It really just looked like Forza 4 at 1080p with some minor changes. They didn't even bother with AA. What I've seen from fh2 leaves me unimpressed. It's not surprising though because the devs said they are using the same engine as Forza 5 which is the same engine they used for forza 4.

It looks like the next gen Cruisn USA I always wanted.

The difference is night and day and if someone can't see it, its probably denial. One looks like a good looking game, the other looks like a real life video footage. Its that good.

It really does... people who say otherwise... well i don't know what to tell you. One looks like a videogame... the other one borderline real.

I'm not really sure how or why a game that allows you to drive everywhere is being compared to a closed course game.

It's like comparing a game that only allows you to walk down a single street to grand theft auto. Yes, the game with the single street will look REALLY good compared to the game that lets you go everywhere.

That being said, they both look fun as hell, so why not just join together and enjoy the amazing racing goodness we're being treated to this year!

Honestly, this is a Project Gotham name in everything but name. The Kudos, the weather, the low-ish in number but broad selection of cars and tracks/locales, the aesthetic (not to mention some of the staff!) just reeks of it. I'm glad it's getting people enthusiastic about driving games again. I can only hope the social aspect catches on... I think clubs of 6 members is basically perfect for this sort of title. Don't want any bigger than that.

PS. We're totally joining the same club, TJ ;)
The car selection isn't PGR in the slightest from what I've seen.

I'm sitting here thirsting for a new PGR, but I'm not getting that feel from this game watching videos of the handling, implementation of the points system and all. The only thing that gives me a PGR feel is the eclectic choice of locales.

Seems like a lot of PGR heads feel like it's a spiritual successor of sorts but I'm not feeling it at all. I think the car selection is something that made Bizarre racers and especially PGR2-4 stand out considerably from other city racers and I see none of the same inspired choices here.

Isn't the DC gif replay footage?

Both look incredible to be honest, I'm shocked Horizon 2 looks as good as it does with it being open world with very few barriers on where you can go.

For me PGR was 100 percent about the locations the sense of speed and handling. Being that a lot of the previews are saying "This handles a lot like PGR" and the locales and speed is a huge checkmark I feel more than warranted being excited about it as a successor.

For real? I haven't read any of the E3 previews yet, but this is fantastic news.

I can see that. For me it was a two part thing, not just the locales but Bizarre went out to include Morgans, the Ford Indigo, the Typhoon, etc. Give you something different ON TOP of the current selection of hot wheels. You could walk through the show room and see a car and be like "what the fuck is this.. I need to drive it."

Maybe I'm apprehensive about thinking of anything as a spiritual successor to my favourite gaming series and still a bit sad about it's silent death.

Forza Horizon looks incredible, but it looks like a video game. DC is on some next level shit we've never seen before. Anyone trying to say they look similar or diminish the gap between the two games needs to get their eyes checked. It is night and day, and DRIVECLUB does both better.

Not to say FH won't be a great game, I'm sure it'll be fantastic.

I agree man. And this was after playing an arcade game like Need for Speed on PC. That image quality was just poop. It really made the experience lesser than what it could be. It genuinely looked like an upscale of a last gen game.

The game looks so good but Rushy needs to give us an update on the track creator's development, how's it coming along, and how long will we have to wait after launch until it's added to the game?

Ill dig around for them it was from the pre-E3 event I think the big one was a eurogamer or videogamer.com video. He said he played the game at last E3 and it was shite and then played it again now and absolutely loved it. A big reason for the change he said was it handles very closely to a game like PGR. He says something like that I got to find it.

Did they say were working on one?

Know they confirmed weather and Photomode for this year.

It's not really a 1:1 comparison as I'm pretty sure the DC gif is from replay mode.

Anyway, enough with the comparisons. Let's talk about when we're getting that sexy weather footage. I've been thinking about it all day. I can't wait to see the fog, the rain, the snow.

I need to see it now.

This preview from Destructoid sounds really good!

http://www.destructoid.com/driveclub-has-the-best-dynamic-weather-engine-i-ve-ever-seen-276367.phtml

At E3 yesterday, Evolution Studios showed off a brand new build of Driveclub that highlights their impressive weather simulation system. This build was so new that it needed to be streamed over from the art director's computer to a PS4 development kit. They showed some stunning, absolutely photorealistic visuals running in real time in both Scotland and Norway.

Seeing how the rain naturally progressed from a slight drizzling to a heavy downpour really showed the power of their weather system; it looked as real as any rainstorm starting that I've ever seen. As the moisture picked up, the lighting began to change through the clouds. Realistic drops started to spatter on the car's hood and run up toward the windshield as the car continued down the track.

As the rain became heavier, tire marks cut into the fresh road wetness. Rain drops flew directly toward the windshield in a believable way.

A paused flyaround made the race scene look like a frozen scene from a movie. Surfaces and grass on the mountains were wet, puddles showed ripples, and water sat around rocks naturally. I couldn't believe how real the mountains in the distance looked, cutting through the haze and backlit by the sun.

Evolution switched the scene to nighttime and we got to see how the rain picked up the headlights and taillights. Drops flying at the windshield heightened the sense of speed. Each drop took light and reflected it a bit. Even roadsigns reflected light convincingly.

We also saw snow in both daylight and at night in Norway. Ominous dark skies changed to a soft blue-purple as snow began to fall. Piles built up on the sides of the road, and the melting snow made the street shine with a reflective gloss.

DriveClub's visuals are just peerless in the racing genre. I dock it for not being 60fps, but it's impossible to deny its overall impact. It's accomplishing effects never even attempted in a racing game before, on PC or console. I am extremely excited for Forza Horizon 2, but visually DriveClub is in a class of its own. It's literally not even remotely close.

Yea, I agree, technically it's on another level.

I wonder if they can squeeze in some devastating weather events like
hurricanes, typhoons, blizzards and tornadoes.

I just watch the IGN E3 footage of this game on my TV using the PlayStation 4 IGN app.

Amazing. I know I keep popping into threads about this game and praising the hell out of it but it honestly keeps surprising even me. Even on the crappy IGN player this game looks amazing on my television. I can't wait to see you in 1080p.

60fps means crap all to me when the game looks this good, runs this smoothly, and has that sense of speed/motion blur.

Not sure if I posted a mother of god already in this thread, but seeing the screenshots again there's no harm even if it's a repeat

MOTHER OF GOD

The word "actual" in the thread title made me crack up a little bit.

Is it supposed to a really amazing feature? I thought other games already had it (stuff like rain and snow and stuff).

Sounds incredible. I hope there's background music to match the mood of falling snow. Also, Rushy really needs to confirm if weather will be there day1 or patched in later. I seem to remember the latter being the case a while ago.

Already confirmed to be patched in later for free along with photo mode. "Sometime in 2014".

I knew Evolution was comprised of technically inclined guys, and I have always been impressed by their games look and feel. But never did I expect Driveclub to look this good, especially after the initial poor E3 showing (Where everybody and their friends, gamers and journalists alike shat on the title 24h over 24)...
DC looks absolutely phenomenal...
