Yeah, but I'm boring! I want to play as a character with personality and an interesting back story. :P

To be fair, I'm sure your character will have some sort of back story that will be revealed later. Maybe. But seriously, I do prefer "real" characters over silent protagonists. That was one of the reasons I liked Bioshock Infinite more than the original. I never connected with Jack (I know he was meant to be your avatar basically, but still).

I'm not saying it won't work, but... I'd prefer a character like Shulk or hell, even Shion (as annoying as she could be) over some player generated guy/girl who is mute.
Yeah, I'm in this camp as well. Hope Takahashi is able to make it work but the early intro with Elma narrating everything like some tour guide isn't evoking a strong first impression. You need a really dynamic character with a winning personality to carry a role like that and, even with the Treehouse guys compensating for the language barrier, she seems to have the personality of KOS-MOS.

That's NOT a good thing.

So um... this may be a silly question but is there actually a Xenoblade in this game?

I mean the first XB game revolved around the Monado so...

As bad as the Xenoblade Chronicles X title is, it'll be even worse if there's no blade.

Would make NO sense if there is no sort of foreign blade of ANY kind in the story.

Maybe this time around it wont be the main characters weapon, but a sought after weapon, or militaristic weapon.

Too early to tell.

I'm not too thrilled about playing as a silent protagonist/creating your own character, but I guess we'll see how that's going to work out. Other than that, I am EXCITED.

I think the faces look fine. They look pretty close to Kunihiko Tanaka's artwork to me, especially that girl with the black hair. I'm probably one the crazy few who actually kind of liked Xenoblades character face/hair models. I thought they looked kind of nice, like they were painted.

What about the the BLADE mentioned in the beginning of the trailer?

Beyond the
Logos
Artificial
Destiny
Emancipator

Maybe it's related to that thing and not an actual blade.

BLADE is an acronym in this game. Dunno if it's a concept or an organization or a device or whatever, but it's apparently no longer a physical blade.

After watching the Treehouse presentation, I think I'm actually OK with the character design. It's still strange, but Elma is cute I guess. In a slightly disturbing doll kinda way.

Just in case somebody doesn't realize: I'm pretty sure "logos" isn't the plural of "logo", but the ancient greek word for "word", "teaching".

The story will be told through the supporting characters. Quite a few RPGs use this method.
It works really well.

It works in a very specific type of games, like Persona.

I highly doubt it's going to work that well in a very cinematic JRPG like XBX, but we'll see. This is the only thing I'm not excited about at all.

e: well there's always something positive, at least it means we won't get a horribly shitty player character like Shion or any annoyingly forced love triangles like Xenoblade's Shulk/
Fiora/Melia
(
team Melia for life, fuck Fiora
)

One of the thing I dislike in Xenoblade is the combat system of other un-man character. Hopefully, they will implement some sort of gambit like FF12, that would be insane.

The Treehouse dudes said your partners actions are highly customizable this time around, so I'm hoping for something like the gambit system too

I'm coming around to the customizable main character aspect, because thinking back on previous Xeno-games you can still attach a lot of back-story and plot to a character who's essentially a blank slate. Like, to be honest Shulk really wasn't amazingly fleshed-out as a personality (though I thought his VA did a pretty good job). Shion WAS more fleshed out over three games, but that also meant she got annoying, and sometimes her US VA kind of grated on me. Fei had no VA so it wasn't an issue, and again besides some rough details he wasn't fleshed out (in fact, wasn't his lack of a personality a plot point? Even though he probably received the most epic back story of all).

With the exception of Shion I think they were going for the general RPG convention of a main character who's sort of generic but that you can still identify with. I guess in an ideal world they'd go the Mass Effect route and still use a male / female VA so there'd be more of a sense of narrative and immersion, but I think it'll be fine even without spoken dialogue.

Now I'm a bit confused.

During the Treehouse segment, the main character is a mute, but on their e3 website Nintendo notes you can customize your character's voice.

Is it just for like battle cries?

Players can customize everything about the main character's appearance, including gender, shapes, height, skin color, voice and tattoos.

Here's an interesting tip bit: the actual BLADE acronym explanation is only given in the English subtitles. The actual Japanese dialogue is instead a much more literal explanation of what it actually is, which the subtitles didn't translate.

In the Japanese dialogue it is very clear that BLADE is a module installed inside someone's head, which allows for an artificial man-made overwrite of a person's destiny by "transcending the word of God".

Yeah, that is definitely the greek word "logos" which usually means the "spoken word", "reason", and "truth". Interestingly enough though, in certain contexts such as religious philosophy, it basically is used for divine principle or God. If that is what they are going for (which is likely considering who the creators are), then "Beyond the Logos Artificial Destiny Emancipator", when translated into more plain english, might mean: "an instrument for surpassing God and escaping His control".

It's exactly what they're going for because that's what it says in Japanese. :)

Really? >.<

I thought it was because Monado is a blade.

Holy fuck is that cool. More direct, literal translations of Japanese insanity, please. Transcending the word of God... damn, Monolith. How is that NOT the coolest schtick of all?

It doesn't look like the customizable main character will have any spoken lines in plot cutscenes, since the main character didn't say a word in cutscenes during the demo yesterday. However, he was clearly speaking during battle, so we at least know that battle cries are in.

What I don't know for certain is if the main character will be chiming in during the party banter. Xenoblade 1 had a ton of banter between the active party members in and out of battle. It is possible that the main character in XB X will still participate in that, if it has returned.

I can point to a possible similar situation in God Eater Burst, where you have a main character with a customizable voice who was silent in story scenes but very chatty during regular gameplay.

oh man, that's really cool. People can break the mold with this. The word of god thing kind of reminds me of the score in Tales of the Abyss. so much hype.

I would guess May 2015 the earliest for NA.
I would be ok with this. I would get to dedicate the summer to this game.

I don't think you have to worry. I just hope it isn't done by the usual dubbed anime cast, hopefully.
I actually liked the JP voices, but maybe I watch too much anime. Xenoblade Chronicles had a dual track so this one probably will too.

Takahashi said he didn't even try with the story for Xenoblade.
Holy shit, what. Xenoblade had one of my favorite stories in any game I've played, probably matched by the Persona series. I'm expecting great things from this game.

I should probably play the earlier Xeno games too, since I've never done that

On a similar note to a Monado showing up, this will be my second Takahashi game and I'm new to this cameo/spiritual successor stuff, so if indeed it's sort of a spiritual sequel rather than a direct sequel, I'm going to be utterly confused when I run into that Nopon. Would they really just force me to go along with whatever new background story they have for that race and pretend like I don't know the Makna forest stuff :-p I know about cameos and such, but my mind will be screwed up if they just straight up call them Nopon and then nothing in this game's universe is directly connected to the other one :-p

Yeah...fully expecting a super-pretentious story like Gears. Ultimately Nintendo's decision, though.

That actually sounds very similar to what the Monado was, considering the entire theme of the game was using it to change your destiny.

Final Fantasy? Chocobos? Moogles? The various summons in every FF have different backstories and relevance to the plot depending on each game too. In each game some specific job classes are directed linked to certain factions in the story and represent some story element, and that changes from game to game too, but the designs remain largely the same. Famous weapons appear across the series too, and sometimes they're part of the plot, sometimes they're not.

This isn't something new...

Usually these kind of games have absolutely strange acronyms that I guess are endearing to the Japanese (because of the foreign factor of English), but are totally jarring when localized. I'm not a fan of the BLADE acronym for one.

It's also gonna be interesting to see what kind of soundtrack Sawano offers in this game. I'm not too big of a fan; his stuff is really hit and miss. I'm already hearing similarities to Attack on Titan and I don't like it.

Did anyone else notice on the e3 games website - http://e3.nintendo.com/games/ - release date for some of the games like Splatoon and Mario Maker are 'first half of 2015', whereas Xeno-X is just '2015'?

I guess it's a good and bad thing. Bad that it will require more patience, good as they can perfect the experience better.

Perhaps they should have tried to keep it foreign and translate it into equally strained German, Greek or Latin?

I'm on board with all the classic Xeno stuff but like a lot of people I'm worried about the custom/silent main character.

I hate silent protags (I don't feel like they're "me" in any way), and I suck ass at Mass Effect... but I think they did it best with both genders speaking the same lines and getting the same actions.

I think they can avoid a boring character by making the plot that much more interesting (see: Chrono Trigger)

I really like the UI and menus hope it does not change much

I wonder if they will add amiibo support since you have a customizable character and all

Finally got to watch this tonight. Glorious.

We really need non-youtube direct feed footage of this game. I can imagine how much better the game is going to look running on the Wii U my own TV.

they are uploading them to the eShop not sure of the quality differences but only the Hyrule Warriors one so far so give it a day

The only times it even remotely feels that way, are the times when your decisions severely affect the way the story plays out. Those are rare.

Sounds more like his work on Guilty Crown to me (especially when comparing βios to the song from E3 2013's trailer).

I hope they do not try and change anything in English to fit western release.

thanks for providing this bit of info
