Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

Splatoon character might be cool if the game ends up having a story and recognizable characters, instead of just being an arena shooter.

Even without all that it still might be a cool addition to the roster, but I'd rather see other mascots with projectiles first.

team fortress has proved you don't even need a story to have recognizable characters.

Man if they get the shooting right and have other mods, man that stuff might catch like wild fire.

While it's good the NOA reps were interested in getting feedback about the game, I don't know how much NCL/Sakurai will listen to them. I know NOA gets a lot of shit, but I think it's not an issue of them not caring/trying and more NCL neglecting to listen to a lot of their suggestions or giving them the freedom to do all that they want.

TF2 does have story and character development, though. It's very unconventional and none of it happens in the game, but each character in TF2 is a distinct character.

What we've seen of the inklings so far just makes them look like avatars devoid of any personality, but all we've seen is a very early build.

TF characters are very distinctive, though. From what I saw of Splatoon in the Direct and Treehouse, the characters looked pretty generic - it looked like six identical characters running around at once. Granted, it's still early on, and we haven't seen too much of the game, but I can't see them making any really memorable "Meet the Splatoon Guy!" videos.

Never seen the beef against sword users. I mean Soul Calibur shows you can have a complete roster with weapon users.
Saying there's too many sword users is such a odd complaint to me.

Are people complaining there are too many fighters who punch and kick?

Miis, I guess their perceived limitations.

Palutena, not a clue.

I'm not a big fan of Miis either - I think they're kinda creepy, though it looks like Sakurai's implemented them well - but I cannot imagine refusing to buy a game because it includes characters you don't like. Hell, even if Smash 4 cut my favorite character, Luigi, I'd still be hyped for it.

Probably because there arent many weapons users that arent swordsmen in Smash. And it also ties into the dislike of FE getting repped by three conceptually samey characters (they dont even have the toolbox of weapons the Links have).

It's because in games with many different characters, sword characters tend to have a better advantage because of range, ease of use, and strength. Marth and Vergil are two (extreme) examples.

Guys my hopes already came crashing down with the "new IP" argument when it came to TW101

Don't let me do the same mistake twice with Splatoon

Smash has some weird "fans", from remarks I've seen on these boards in the last few months I've noticed a handful of people who only like smash because they think a character they personally love might make it in.

There's Smash fans & people who want to play [character x] in smash.

Well then they should feel right at home in Nintendo's stable of avatar characters with little to no personality.

Cross posting from the Palutena reveal thread:

I'm not really feeling Palutena as a character yet--out of all the newcomers shown so far we have the smallest idea of how she actually plays. Her trailer wasn't very good in this regard, just a mishmash of quick cuts of all of her customizable special moves, very little of her just fighting. Kind of wish she wasn't fully customizable like the Miis either, she seems pretty unfocused. Too bad she's not playable at E3 and didn't get a proper video demonstration like the Mii's. Pac-Man's trailer was also a lot better showing him off. Hrm. She's just kind of "there" for me right now, which is odd considering how much I've been looking forward to her.

I think I might have posted this sentiment earlier, but whatever.

I was wondering why people were saying they could not play Project Melee.
Perhaps Nintendo is issuing a cease & desist for the project?
If so, then that makes some reactions make total sense.

That isn't the implication I got. From what I heard from others who asked her, Pechyhime's comment was just her being well... worried. It wasn't anything she officially was told by Nintendo at all. Just a feeling or suspicion she had.

Good point and while that is true it really depends on how the character plays. There are very stark differences between how Marth, Ike and Link play.

Is this real?

Squid boy and Squid girl hypothetically get in smash.

What is their move set like?

If Nintendo wanted to C&D PM, they would have done so already and they wouldn't have invited someone to the Invitational who is literally only known for playing PM. Not to mention it would be a terribad PR move to kill PM right after spending a significant portion of E3 trying to convince players that they care about competitive players.

He is out of Smash Bros Business since Mii and Palutena got confirmed. He got upset that both of them got confirmed.

He's serious.. I asked him in chatroom, and he said Yes, he's very serious. Then he left the chatroom, and we haven't heard from him ever since.

I don't feel bad about giving him that avatar anymore.

I wouldn't say they're devoid of personality. You can see it in THEIR FACES - I would say "mischievous" is the first thing that comes to mind. It's not on the level of TF2, but there's no real reason to give them that much depth - it's not a class shooter where each player has a specific role. They should all be mostly identical, because the playing field should be equal.

It's certainly no less personality than Link, who's pretty much just "heroic," or Kirby, who's pretty much just "cute."

The characters have large a variety of weapons judging from the trailer. Could be used as specials. Squid form could be used as the super jump recovery, as well as a dodge animation.

Hard to say this early.

Man, those characters' designs are awesome. I wish they got in Smash, too bad there's no time for that :(

Anything is possible to be honest. Roy got into Melee before his game was even out and Splatoon would have had to be in development since around 2012-2013 since it's from the Animal Crossing/Nintendo Land team.

If not now, then maybe DLC.

I can't see Nintendo issuing a C&D for P:M now. I mean, they've certainly been aware of it before now, and there's no way they would do something like that right after building so much momentum during E3.

I do not get buying a game because you hate a character. You cannot even battle randomly online with Miis. I hate Pichu, but Melee was a blast.

I could see it. In a story based game where the character is one of the main ones. Not in a fighter with 40 characters.

Definitely gotta disagree with that last part. Toon Link has always been oozing with personality, as has Kirby. There's also an obvious difference because those are character-based games. Plus, they're from The Legend of Zelda and Kirby, two major Nintendo series.

Man, those characters' designs are awesome. I wish they got in Smash, too bad there's no time for that :(
DLC!

Catching up.

Prog is seriously one of the best community representatives any fanbase could have. That quote about whispers and screams is so apt.

Pop-O-Matic seriously rage quit because of Miis and Palutena? Incredible.

I'd totally love it if there were some developed class characters a la TF2 for Splatoon. The main Squid chick is easily the best design of the regular opponents though.

she to me personally seems to be one of those characters where the moves you pick will fully determine the kind of character youll play.

Some of her moves seem good for 1 vs 1 and others look good for ffas.

but that could apply to all the characters (but from just seeing mario's options it seems it might not be the case)

it seems palutena is like the miis but in character form

I am just gauging by reactions. Someone said "after the release", so maybe they are going to do it in December? Either way, it is either A) they are going to do it B) mod people think they are going to do it.

Shulk is actually pretty different from other sword guys. In terms of gameplay, he is actually more rogue-like: he uses stealth and likes attacking enemies from the side or back. His large blade actually is more of a spell-casting tool than anything; it is all about special abilities, such as creating defensive barriers or granting speed/evasion boosts. It would be cool if they could reflect his teamwork focused fighting style in Smash Bros.

That's good to hear about Shulk, it makes me less apprehensive about both Chrom and Shulk being in.

In fact, just from your short summary on Shulk, I'm really looking foward to him being in (I love me some stealthy magic fighters!)

The main Squid chick is easily the best design of the regular opponents though.

I don't think its a main squid boy or girl, it seems like there is customization. So they are just bases, maybe it gets crazy. What if they get a to wear a tentacruel on their head?

If Zelda can summon a steel guardian, I assume Chrom can summon MU which is a magic user. Chrom has the advantage of not just using swords due to how him and MU work.

Is it bad that the most exciting part for me, every time Nintendo reveals a new IP or character, is the possibility of them making it into Smash Bros. someday?

From what I saw, the game looked like a lot of fun, and I like their abilities. But I wish the designs were better. They both look like something from a generic cartoon. I think they'll grow on me though.

Eh, it could be something that comes into play if PM grows, or they feel it would hurt their ability to sell Smash 4. I don't think it will though, just for the public image problems it would cause them.

Yeah, he is. Guys like him are what drive the development of a community forward. I hope people start listening to him more!
