Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

Dat (probably) Up-Tilt tho.

So Sakurai saw Meta Knight and decided he needed to make another pet character even more bullshit.

Smash has some weird "fans", from remarks I've seen on these boards in the last few months I've noticed a handful of people who only like smash because they think a character they personally love might make it in.

There's Smash fans & people who want to play [character x] in smash.

I think a number of us are spoiled because we're fans of Nintendo's more prominent franchises and characters. I've always liked DK, Bowser and Kirby so my personal wants are settled and everything else is a cherry on top, but if you're only a Nintendo fan because of say, Starfy you'd probably feel left out if you don't particularly love how the game plays.

Well then they should feel right at home in Nintendo's stable of avatar characters with little to no personality.

I wouldn't say they're devoid of personality. You can see it in THEIR FACES - I would say "mischievous" is the first thing that comes to mind. It's not on the level of TF2, but there's no real reason to give them that much depth - it's not a class shooter where each player has a specific role. They should all be mostly identical, because the playing field should be equal.

It's certainly no less personality than Link, who's pretty much just "heroic," or Kirby, who's pretty much just "cute."

Obviously "personality" is the wrong word, but there's a clear difference from characters who have unique looks vs. all we've seen of the inklings so far which seems to be is a basic body type with a couple of customization options on top (though I'd personally disagree with most incarnations of Link and Kirby in general).

I'm looking forward to Splatoon and I'm hoping there's going to be a fleshed out solo mode that addresses that in particular, but they don't seem like mascot status characters just yet, though they could probably reach that point like Villager eventually did.

Is this real?

Squid boy and Squid girl hypothetically get in smash.

What is their move set like?

Neutral B - Sniper paint rifle. Stands in place, chargeable, freely aimable

Side B - Standard paint rifle. Can move freely while using it.

Up B - Paint Cannon Rocket Jump.

Down B - Something involving the squid form, although I'm not sure how best to utilize it.

Dash attack is the paint roller, and the Final Smash is that paint nuke.

Is it bad that the most exciting part for me, every time Nintendo reveals a new IP or character, is the possibility of them making it into Smash Bros. someday?

Smash is my ulterior motive for everything I want Nintendo to do, especially creating core IP.

Cross posting from the Palutena reveal thread:

I'm not really feeling Palutena as a character yet--out of all the newcomers shown so far we have the smallest idea of how she actually plays. Her trailer wasn't very good in this regard, just a mishmash of quick cuts of all of her customizable special moves, very little of her just fighting. Kind of wish she wasn't fully customizable like the Miis either, she seems pretty unfocused. Too bad she's not playable at E3 and didn't get a proper video demonstration like the Mii's. Pac-Man's trailer was also a lot better showing him off. Hrm. She's just kind of "there" for me right now, which is odd considering how much I've been looking forward to her.

I think I might have posted this sentiment earlier, but whatever.

Wait, do we have confirmation that her moves are all customizable?

I kinda just figured she had an extra special button or two for all those moves.

Dat (probably) Up-Tilt tho.

Really, that's not one of her special move options? Crazy!

Anyway, we got the Jpn version of Pac-Land released on the eShop for Pacman's reveal... any chance we'd see a translated Rhythm Heaven GBA release for Chorus Men? Cause that'd be great.

I feel bad knowing I'm exactly like this sometimes. :lol

This looks much faster than Thunder.

hmm true i gotta see the trailer again to see things i might have missed her down smash looks like it has a lot of range as well

o man the first 2 seconds into game play when she dodges and attacks with her wings? holy crap that has a lot of range

I just really hope Palutena is properly balanced around her default moveset, whatever it is. Miis can be an unfocused mess, they're intended to be player created characters anyway, but I really hope Palutena feels like a regular character in that regard.

Palutena doesn't seem to have any underlying theme as a character in favour of just using a load of stuff from KI:U.

Really poor implementation if you ask me.

If the first moves shown in the trailer are the standard ones, expect Palutena to have:

neutral: heavenly light
side: Explosive Flame
Up: Warp
Down: Reflect/Barrier

So if you had to guess, do you think tournaments will use custom moves? If not, will Mii be allowed?

Assuming if the new game even has tournaments lol Brawl 2.0

Heavenly Light and Reflect Barrier are among the most “Palutena-esque” of her special move options, and she uses them in her anime opening, so I’m assuming they’re default.

I feel like Explosive Flame might be her default side special. Super Speed and Angelic Missile don’t suit her as well in my opinion.

The up special is tricky. Warp was shown first, but a teleport recovery by default makes her overlap a little too much with Zelda. Jump Glide suits her the most, so I’m going to go with that — but again, this one is tough.

I disagree. Her standard attacks involve light, her staff, and her shield, which makes a lot of sense and is what most of us expected. Even though she has a lot of special move options, they mostly fit her.

Not every character needs to appeal to every person. I think Little Mac is the most boring addition in this game, but folks seem to love him. Palutena was designed for someone like me. Someone who likes to plan carefully.

I want to main her for this move alone. Captain Corridor!

Play her on a team with Pikachu for maximum fuckery.

I've made a large post about this before but I think custom movesets could add a lot to the competitive game, but this was when I was under the impression that all of the custom ones would be side grades like we'd seen before palutena.

If they're properly balanced then I don't see why they shouldn't be used, but if there's a couple that are broken then they should all just be disabled by default at a tournament, it's way too much hassle for TO's and players to go through.

If you can't customise moves on the character select screen I'd also be against custom moves, would make matches move much slower in a tournament.

It's kinda like Zelda where we have a character who's never been playable before so we're really just giving her a bunch of aspects of another playable character that suit her in some way. I don't particularly love it, but Palutena doesn't really *do* a whole lot so she's gotta fill in the blanks somewhere.

Actually agree. Should have given all her current Special Moves to Pit and made her an OP beam spam character

o god that would have sucked

Palutena's trailer is more messy compared to the other characters (gameplay portion). I guess they just wanted to show her uniqueness to the rest of the cast (excluding Miis).

Isn't that just the match from the roundtable though?

thats honestly the feeling i get too shes seems to be the most rough around the edges for sure and seems like they just wanted to show her off because of the miis

Everything I said is based on speculation and assumption.

List of Special Moves for Customizations

Dash: Lightweight

Neutral B - Heavenly Light, Autoreticle, and Charged Staff Shot.

Side B - Angelic Missile, Explosive Flame, and Super Speed

Up B - Warp, Rocket Jump and Jump Glide

Down B - Counter, Reflect Barrier, and Celestial Firework

Final Smash - Merged Attack of Black Hole and Mega Laser

I believed that screenshots that were shown on Palutena's Bio are more likely to be default moveset.

First image: You could see Explosion Flame.
Second image: since you could noticed that Kirby with Palutena Hat was at end of animation of Staff's Charged Shot or Heavenly Light. It's more likely to be Heavenly Light.

Default Move Set (based on my assumption)

B: Heavenly Light
Side B: Explosion Flame
Down B: Reflect Barrier
Up B: Warp or Jump Guide
