DRIVECLUB gets actual weather effects, screenshots inside

Ha! I was trying to keep it mobile friendly, although your gif was a shitload better.

Sad to read a few PGR fans aren't feeling a PGR vibe from DriveClub. Ged Talbot is working for Evolution Studios - for those who don't know Ged was the lead designer on PGR 3 & 4, the criminally under rated Blur and 'played a key role in the development of PGR 1 and 2 plus Metropolis Street Racer' - so expect to feel some PGR/Bizarre Creations DNA in DC.

Spot on. It has the potential to be the true son of PGR... heres hoping for a similar experience. PGR4 was my favourite racer of the last 10 years.
Nothing recent matchs the sheer FUN of racing through streets with a Wheel. NOTHING.

They need to nail down the aliasing present in current videos.

If they do that, then it's golden.

Is there a way they could do that? The aliasing has been mostly on power lines. Those (in my experience of playing video games) are the hardest to model convincingly.

Wow, keep going Driveclub! Bring us to the next gen promised land!

You're right, got mixed up with the snow track towards the end of the GameSpot interview. What you're looking for may be in one of the vids at the top of this page.

Yep, it's in the IGN video posted at the top of the last page. Thanks. Around the 14:55 mark on the video. Astounding. I initially thought those 2 GIFs were from the reveal trailer. The game has come a long way.

The visuals in DriveClub are just out of control. I seriously cannot believe some of this shit. I have a top end PC that can play the best looking racing games on the market, and putting aside the really insane stuff like downsampling the games and including 60fps, this game is smashing all other racing games in every other category. It's insane. I've heard people say Project Cars looked as good before, but they must be tripping.

blasphemy. pc gaf will tear you to pieces.

So wait a second....

Weather is coming out AFTER Driveclub actually releases? As a free patched-in feature?

What? This totally caught me off guard.

Why not just wait until it's 100% complete to ship it?

Keep in mind, I am more than certain weather was never intended in the original release. When asked, they said they'd add it if they had time (and the delay has allowed that).

I am glad we can know for sure that they will indeed add it in, and that it will affect the gameplay.

We can only hope. I want the IQ to be perfect!!!!!

They have till October, lets see what happens.

I'm slightly wary about the difficulty. The videos always seem to show tight pack racing, which looks great, but the guy demoing doesn't progress forwards very much, and often gets overtaken by cars suddenly going really fast. Hope it's not too rubber-bandy.

We've not seen any actual footage of it snowing or raining right? Checked that IGN vid and it's just them driving in a snowy landscape, not actual snow falling.

Rounding up some of the various videos in case someone missed them.

O shit just saw some...the IGN 1080p video is amazing even though its compressed. Can't believe it looks this good. Those who were saying I was comparing replay to in-game FH2 gif, just go watch this video. Its same quality in-game.

How come in both pCars and DC do we not see puddle splashing on the roads? Is this just incredibly resource-consuming?

Well, Rushy said that the weather tech is still early and in a few months you can expect it to look much better than it does now. So that might be a reason why you don't see splashing.

I'm cherry picking here, but after hearing all the effort gone into small details, I'm a bit disappointed that the puddles of water don't react to the cars going over them. Unless I just can't notice it in these gifs.

They do, look at the end of the second gif on the left. I can't see any water in the first gif :p

I think those are patches of ice?

According to the weather previews, cars actually spray a lot of water around in wet conditions.

They really should make hitting walls/barriers a lot less forgiving.
My biggest hate with gran tourismo is that you could take a corner at full speed simply by riding the wall, this isnt supposed to be wipeout.

I agree with Gran Turismo, but Evolution's philosophy with this game is they don't want you to feel punished for making a mistake. Their goal is to keep the races fun and provide more goals than just taking every corner perfectly. It's definitely intended to be more on the arcadey side than sim.

Well you do get docked points when you hit a car/barrier or drive off the track leading to a lower score. I hope that will deter people since I assume most would want to drive clean and get a bigger score for their club to unlock stuff.

That's black ice, I believe. In any case, I remember seeing reflections in one of the videos. Here are some reflections on "puddles". We are yet to see gameplay of this. Can't wait!

I believed in EVO from the get go i knew they will deliver, this game set the bar high for what can be achieved in term of visuals (for racing games) on these consoles, well done EVO

Game is certainly beautiful. Hopefully it plays well also. I'm interested to see how it reviews due to Forza Horizon 2 releasing a week earlier with a lot more content. No doubt reviewers will review DC in relation to Forza (even though they say they aren't). Standards will be higher.

Driveclub has an amazingly dynamic weather system that almost has no right being in a video game. The bright blue sky slowly darkens as clouds form in the sky. The lighting changes drastically as the sunlight refracts through the clouds, and then a gentle rain starts. Before too long the clouds have darkened and rain is pouring down upon the racers. Puddles start forming on the sides of the roads, the road get appropriately wet and reflects everything exactly how it should be reflected while wheels kick up spray in a realistic manner.

The weather and lighting system they have is just ridiculous. Wind varies in strength, and when it does clouds and the ocean are affected, if clouds are affected so is the light passing around and through them, the sun is positioned correctly for wherever in the world the course you’re racing is in, and snow and rain can be gentle or a true challenge. It’s VERY hard to criticise the graphics of Driveclub when you see what it can do, and they seem to be aware of anything that needs to be changed.

Ridiculous. Motorstorm was arcadey as an arcade game could get and hitting/scraping a wall would totally slow you down or wreck your car. If you were playing online you would clench your buttocks taking a corner especially in a close race as two of you approach the finishing line. Winning would be a matter of who took the best race line without over doing it on the speed, you would get people choking in the last few corners, in mspr if they saw /heard you behind, as they went into corners too hot or they'd slow down too much because the consequences of crashing were too great.
With this game you'd just need to ride the wall and zoom past anyone trying to race cleanly.

There is only one thing that matters to me iun racing games:

It ain't graphics (we are at the point now where most racing games look phenomenal anyway)
It aint amount of cars
It aint treacks

It is SENSE OF SPEED. They got it right!

Gran Turismo was always guilty of this. I never felt ike I was going 100mph+ even when the speedometer sad I was. I think the last game to attempt to this properly was SHiFT series. Which means well for Project Cars.

This is very important to me.

I honestly feel like word of mouth and the social features in the end, along with the visuals, are going to make this game sell gangbusters over its lifetime.

I have to disagree just on the graphics part. No game is doing what this game does. Most of these features are a first in racing games. I have no idea how one could overlook them.
