Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Yeah this game is really great. I am already trying to get better loot out of that one Strike mission, so this totally got it's hooks into me.

It's not a "real" alpha. It's basically a vertical slice. They polished that part of the game (which is a very small part btw) to the point where it could be released to the public but I can garantee you that the rest of the game is nowhere near that level of polish.

It's actually better. :)

Sooooo I went from excited for this based on concept a while ago to not really sure about it only because I got confused about what this game was supposed to be. But now after playing the alpha for a bit I think I'm REALLY hyped.

It has this futuristic fallout vibe with mmo gameplay. Overall I'm just really impressed. And dem graphics. I wonder if the final version will look any different when I'm alrady really impressed.

Color me impressed. This game is amazing... I agree the voice over guy is terrible. I love it. Think I will pre-order. I am playing as a hunter but dying to try the other classes. I was worried it would be like Borderlands. This seems very fresh compared to alot of the stale FPS gameplay recently.

I feel like Mass Effect, Halo, and Borderlands all got together and had a kid and it turned out to be Destiny. I can tell though that it was the first Mass Effect in this threesome because of the loading times in Destiny.

In all honesty though, this game is awesome and I'm surprised because from what I read before the alpha people were bored with it.

Weird how there should be a lot more people now, but I'm not running into anyone now x.x Trying to do public events solo goes horribly wrong for me =p

I've never tried the PS4's Wi-Fi, as the PS3's was so problematic, and gave me 100-200kbps download speeds. It can't be that bad on the PS4 I presume?

the wifi on my ps4 is light speed compared to my ps3. i had to run my ps3 hardwired and it was still slow as shit. i downloaded the destiny alpha in about an hour and 20 minutes. it would have taken at least 6 hours on my PS3. try your ps4's wifi, it might surprise you.

Is there any way to turn off the numbers that fly off your target when you hit them?

That's like anti-feedback to me. It's just annoying.

I love the hell out of this game. I played through to level 7 tonight and had a blast. Tomorrow I'm looking forward to trying out the Crucible to see what that's all about. You win, Bungie.

Edit: What are the plants used for? I've gathered quite a bit of them and I can't seem to find out what they are for.

Man, I always love Bungie's stat pages and all the info at your disposal and it's even here for the Alpha including all your gear and equipment like the in-game inventory...only obviously some of it not working just now! lol

I take it Grimoire cards are just collectibles to find?

It feels like a PC game in my opinion.

Like it was built for the PC and then ported over to the PS4.

I say this just due to the MMO aspects and the way you move around on the vehicle, it just feels..... keyboardy.... (yeah I know that not a real word).

The game does feel very halo like (not that its a bad thing) especially considering this is from Bungie, its almost to be expected.

I just feel..... It would feel more at home on a PC rather than a console.
It doesn't feel like a console game like Halo or Killzone does.

I honestly may cancel my pre-order and wait/hope a PC version comes out.

Edit: What are the plants used for? I've gathered quite a bit of them and I can't seem to find out what they are for.

Right now, the only thing I've found is that some vendors will exchange 20 of them for certain forms of currency/respect.

These impressions are off the hook. To think how many more areas/planets/strikes/RAIDS that will be available for us at launch is absolutely mind blowing. I wonder how many Earth areas will be made available at launch in addition to Old Russia.

Had the exact same feeling. I was walking around the hub and I thought...this is Borderlands! Then I walked into one of the inner rooms, and I was like...wait...it's Mass Effect!

So I've found that in explore mode you can pretty easily get to areas we aren't really meant to go during the alpha. I found a little hidden path in one area, went down it and got knocked off my speeder by some level 22s. I NOPE'd the fuck out of there as fast as possible and somehow made it without dying. Good times.

haha and what's your source on this?

Haha, yeah. I went down a tunnel and ran into a pack of baddies that had red ??s instead of a level. Needless to say I ran away screaming.

Does the game play mostly like an MMO (but with FPS combat)? I'd have thought something like that may play better with the PC crowd than console.

I seem to be in the minority here, but I think it's important to note my opinion from 2+ hours on PS4. Bear in mind that it's still Alpha, and I'm being very harsh on it.

  • Graphics are not very impressive. Texture detail is good in some areas, but terrible in others.
  • Framerate doesn't go over 30FPS, sometimes it feels like it drops slightly below even. Graphical fidelity does not justify it at all on the most powerful next gen console.
  • Menus are made with PC in mind?? This boggles my mind, since no PC version is announced. But the menus are controlled using a cursor with the analog stick. It's not very intuitive for a controller, but would be perfect for a mouse.
  • Particle effects look like something out of previous gen, looks like big meshes with particle textures rather than single particles.
  • Mission structure is straight out of an MMORPG. Littered with repetitive fetch quests, respawning enemies, and bland environments to fight in.
  • The game is basically Borderlands meets Halo with the above MMORPG elements.
  • The FOV is really low. It wouldn't be such a problem if the gun models weren't giant as they are or if the framerate was 60FPS, because then you'd actually be able to see enemies clearly.
  • The vehicle you can access almost at all times is awesome, but it's also mostly due to the fact that it's taken from Halo.
  • The world doesn't appear seamless at all. Sure, you can stumble upon players during missions, but you start all main missions from a menu. This includes PVP as well - PVP being basic multiplayer as we've seen in Halo, CoD etc.
  • For the 2 hours I played I never found an interesting gun, unlike Borderlands 2 that throws interesting loot at you at all times.
  • Useless hub world, that could've worked just as well as a menu or be integrated in the actual levels themselves. It also changes your perspective to 3rd person for some reason, completely ruining immersion.
  • For a loot based game, I'd prefer a weapon wheel, because having only 2 guns and a heavy available without going to the inventory-menu is a pain.
  • Weapons have nice kick back for a console shooter. After a burst you often have to realign your sights, which I dig. It also makes it more skillbased that players have lots of health, letting the better shot win the fight.
  • Supercharge is OP in PVP. It's completely random when you'll encounter one with it, and I've often gotten instakilled or done it to someone else using it, and I don't think it has a place in PVP.
The game is far from innovative, but it is a decent amount of fun. If you like Borderlands and Halo, you'll like this.

My apologies if this has been addressed already, but is any part of this alpha playable offline? Will be at my parents' house this weekend with a weak ass connection.

This game is great.

Honestly, this is going to sound silly but after a couple hours of play a part of me wants to stop playing, as to not spoil the newness of the game when it releases. Problem is, that I can't, it's just too fun.

Edit:

My apologies if this has been addressed already, but is any part of this alpha playable offline? Will be at my parents' house this weekend with a weak ass connection.

No part of the game will ever be playable offline as far as I\m concerned, it's an online only game.

Is anyone else having trouble downloading the alpha? I downloaded Sly Cooper from ps plus on my PS3 in about an hour and a half last night and that's a 15 gb download. I've been trying to download this since about 4 pm today (almost 5 hours ago) and i'm only 2/3 of the way done. I've tried wifi and hardwired
