Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Been playing the alpha for a couple of hours (multiplayer). Feels decidedly last gen - the 30 fps and Reach style visuals make it feel old - in fact Halo 4 on 360 runs and looks as good. Hope there's a hook to the main game, as Destiny MP is not going to be taking up much of my time.

Not only that... Halo 4's world's were about 1/100th the size.

So anyone with Fios have a fast download? if not, then Sony is to blame. Even tho it gives them a better idea, they are still to "blame" regardless of alpha or not. If there is a problem, blame goes to who is responsible whether justified or not.

if it's all Fios customers though, then fuck verizon

So far I'm seeing a lot of Fios posts. I'm on fios as well, but I'm at work and started the DL from my phone about 2 hours ago. I'll look to see if I can get an update on my phone... last time I looked it just said downloading. As for Sony I guess I'm a little less hostile when it comes to downloading a free beta that many people are trying to download as well.

MOTHER FUCK VERIZON!

Just did my first two rounds of Crucible. I've found that I find myself killed by Titan smashes a lot x.x Among other things, because I suck, but those smashes @_@

Was fun, though.

Is it normal to only have one story open? I beat the
Wizard
and that's still the only orange mission to choose from.

Love it so far. This is going to itch my RPG and FPS scratch for a longggggggg time. I can only imagine how many options we'll have in the full game.

I did everything under the sun.

I reset my Reuter.
I reset my PS4.
I tried WiFi.
I tried LAN.
I set up a DMZ.
I called Verizon.
I disabled/changed 802.11 to everything and back.
I forwarded my ports.

My download went from 60 minutes to 70+ hours, and stayed there for hours.

I just used some different ports for PS4 and it seems to be working now. 24 minutes left, and it's been working for 10 minutes so far. Hopefully I didn't jinx myself, but I thought maybe these ports could help someone else.

I'm running in Compatibility mode for 802.11b/g/n.
With the above ports forwarded.

FiOS people: I sped my download up from 50 hours remaining to 45 minutes remaining by turning off my PS4 completely for 10 minutes before rebooting. Hopefully that helps.

Playing for few hrs now. Surprised and impressed how smooth and great looking this game is. This alpha just sealed the deal for me. Day 1 ps4 game for sure.

Level 6 now. Running around doing a bunch of small missions.

The public group events are pretty awesome - I almost wish I can trigger more of them.

When going to the tower, things get a bit confusing. Some guys just hook you up with some gear, where others are just so high level I'm not sure why it even shows me that stuff - seems like quite the jump.

I definitely can see why this is being hyped. I think the graphics look pretty great all around with some questionable areas that get dark and gritty in the caves.

Transitions from the bike to battle never gets old!

That's all that's available in the Alpha. Check the OP.

Yeah, that mission, the Strike mission, and exploration are all that the alpha has. Multiplayer PVP, too.

This is like my dream game, an FPS with MMO elements. The actual shooting mechanics can be bland sometimes but I can see it getting really good as you level up higher. Hopefully they have a lot of content and add more constantly like they promised to keep things fresh. The addictive nature of this game has the potential to be extremely sky high if they do this right.

Ok, I am still cant access the servers checked I have the "marionberry" error, went to bungie alpha and it says this

Sorry!
Your account is not authorized for this scouting mission.
You're still welcome in orbit around Bungie.net.

Bummer =/

I entered the alpha contest sign up with my account

From what little I played, which really is a little over ten minutes, I kinda like it so far. Since it took a long ass while to download and I'm quite beat, I'll post a better impression tomorrow. Gonna spend the day experimenting with the three classes and all. I started off with the third class which forthe life of me I can't recall what it's call.

I really wonder about some of you guys. Are you playing on a 2002 Visio set or something? It looks great on a 1080p set, especially if it's properly calibrated.

You're drunk or you need new eyes or a new tv or like all of the above.

Game is aliased like a motherfucker. Bad frame drops too.

Maybe I'm just spoiled from playing nothing but PC for the past couple of months, but damn. I remember inFamous looking a lot better than this crap.

Hopefully the launch game looks better...

Yeah, the game looked like shit when I first booted it up and I spent a good 10 minutes or so with the settings. Looked great afterwards. One thing in particular was I had my Sharpness up just a little bit too high, causing the plentiful amounts of foliage to look fucking terrible.

Quick question, I created a new alpha account because it didn't let me log in with my regular Bungie account. Is that normal?

On the vast majority of TV's, sharpness should always be set to 0 for gaming.

Got the demo downloaded in an hour or so. The game looks fine, plays fine and was decent fun... It's transitioned to a Day 1 buy for me.

I only wish I had more friends on PSN.

I just played the biggest grind I've ever experienced in a game. So I guess we were too low level to be playing this mission with the spider tank because it took me and two others just over 2 hours to finish. The amount of damage the tank and the sentinal took is ridiculous! You wouldn't normally have randoms stay that sort of duration but we pulled through together. I'm actually a bit dizzy right now. We danced at the end and god damn did we mean it.

I don't know man, you should go back and replay Halo 4.

I honestly think Destiny looks great and plays great. I would call it anything but "feeling decidedly last gen". The draw distance is awesome, the world feels huge, the music is great, the gameplay feels like a refinement of Halo, the customization options are promising, and the multiplayer aspect seems to genuinely add to it.

I'm much more optimistic about this game than I was before, this Alpha is selling me on it.

Looks fine at the default Sharpness setting on my Bravia. I had it like 4 clicks above default and that's all it took to ruin the image. My Gamma and Contrast were also a bit off.

Worth spending the time to get your shit looking right.

Played about thirty minutes. Fucking love it. This game is going to be a major time consumer for me. Only gripe thus far is that I can't fly the ship myself. No Man's Sky put that desire in me and it won't go away. Anyway, I started off and was amazed that the character creator is included, along with a choice of the three classes. I created my char and got into the first mission. Hit the trackpad to see my objective and saw a button command for a vehicle and return to orbit. I hit the corresponding button and nothing happened, so I figured it wasn't available in Alpha. As I played further I realized this is a game that wants you to hold down the button as opposed to press it for certain commands. So after I finished the first mission (and unsucessfully tried to catch up to two other players whose names I saw ahead of me), I held down the button for vehicle and was fucking stoked when the equivalent of a Star Wars speeder bike showed up. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. I get paid tomorrow and I'm going to gamestop and giving them 65 bucks. This is the first game in a long while that I'll pick up on midnight.

Anyway, it feels very Bungie. From the enemy voices when they see you to the way the enemies react to you. This is a game I'll def play on a higher difficulty level and love every minute of. What else what else...oh yeah, it's bleeping gorgeous. If they can polish this up before launch then we're in for a visual treat.

So anyway, I completed the first mission in about 20 minutes and was ready for a "thanks for playing" message, but it appears there's more to play. I haven't explored all the available areas yet, but after a quick glance it looks like I can squeeze at least another hour out of this.

This is going to be something we talk about for a long time, guys. I'm bummed that this will end on Sunday, but at least I'll get access to the beta. If you liked Halo, you should at least check this out. If you love Halo (like I do), I'd bet you'll love this.
