Volgarr the Viking coming to Xbox One - Releasing "Soon"

I didn't see a thread on this but Volgarr the Viking was mentioned on the list of ID@Xbox games published on Xbox Wire a couple days ago.

Looking at their Twitter account it sounds like the game should be releasing pretty soon too.

This game has been on my list for a while now, I've only ever seen people talking up how great it is.

Nice catch for Microsoft. This game is friggin' great. Everyone with a Xbox One needs to grab this.

Good. This game needs more love. Hey devs that are making this game reading this, is this a Xbox console exclusive?

We are not planning on XBox One being the only console we port to, however it is the first console that will feature Volgarr the Viking for one simple reason - Microsoft gave us free dev kits. Sony and Nintendo told us they have no more "loaner" dev kits available, so we have to save up money to buy them (they aren't cheap, at least for us - it would be the equivalent of giving up 1-2 months of our salaries for each platform we get dev kits for). We're hoping the XB1 sales can get us to the point where we can afford to buy dev kits for the other consoles.

Also work on Mac and Linux version has continued to progress!

Glad to see the enthusiasm here for this port! :)

For those Xbox gamers not in the know, you're about to receive one of the best titles of 2013. I hope they add extra content (which makes it back to PC).

Yeah, getting free dev kits is a fantastic reason to develop for a platform honestly. We often hear people talk about "moneyhats" as if it is incredibly common for first parties to go up to developers and publishers and just hand out cash, when the reality is often that it simply makes business sense to work with a first party for the perks.

For a small indie start up, it's way more important to simply be able to get stuff out so you have something to sell, and it would be silly to turn down any sort of assistance to expand that outreach. I really hope more people will pick up Volgarr and play it, and fund more great stuff from your studio. It's a fantastic game.

Looks like an indie game I might actually play (if priced reasonably) rather then just watch videos of, looking forward to the release.

Love this game, will double dip on XB1. My friends and I were "pissed" when it came out since we were working on our own "Rastan" inspired indie game for XBLIG, and this game was so much better than we could do over the weekends.

You guys made my day.

Duckroll, you pretty much nailed it. MS was super helpful and it is very important for us to keep getting a revenue stream while our studio is still this small. Simply so we can continue to make the next thing.

On that note, we never really got a huge mainstream press push. Everything about Volgarr has been pretty grass roots and we are really thankful for the support and spreading the word we received from a lot of regulars here, but mostly that anyone played the game to begin with and that more people like it than don't! That's really cool to me.

It still blows my mind when I find fan art in places that speak foreign languages. That some person on the other side of the planet might be stabbing a lizardman in the face right now.

Taron and I made a ton of games before, but Volgarr is special in the fact that it's the first time we were 100% responsible for everything that happened with the development of the game.

So is this in the same vein as something like the classic Castlevania games? Those games are my favorite of all time. I think this is up my ally.

I've got your game on Steam, an amazing and fun game. :) And I'm happy that it's headed to the xb1.

Det är ett väldigt kul spel som sagt!

Will buy on X1, hope it helps a little extra for you guys to meet your goals!

Super Ghouls and Ghosts is the best comparison. You can only take two hits (though there are power ups throughout the level that can give you a third). Tons of hidden shit everywhere, and not always in the more modern obvious ways. More like you'll accidentally hit the ground in spots and stumble on a power up. Awesome boss fights.

It feels like a game out of the 16-bit era, not just a game pretending to be one.

I don't think it feels like either, personally.

I know it's a tired, trite thing to say, but... it really feels like 2D Dark Souls. I know - I know... but, to me, they're the two games that have the most in common. With Volgarr, I struggled with the first level alone for ages but now it's something I can pretty much stroll through. Just like Dark Souls! Volgarr is a great "trainer"; your skill as a player noticeably improves. You don't get better loot or level up, you just... improve.

Great game. I'm yet to finish it, though. Got to the flying airship level.

.

It's one of the most well designed retro challenge games I've ever played.

Man, this, Cuphead and Ori. MS is finally hitting the right notes for indie games again.

You can thank Joel and Adam of Rooster Teeth for bringing this game to my attention. They recently did a play through of it which was hilarious to watch. I got really excited when I found out that it was coming to XB1. Can't wait to play it!

Great stuff! I've been watching some videos on Youtube and now I'm even more excited.

Hope X1 owners purchase the game and help our fellow PS4/Wii U gamers get the game soon!
