Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

too much bullet sponging on those strike bosses IMO :l

laggy hit detection in pvp

I noticed this as well, I think they amount of damage the big baddies take needs to be messed with a bit. First first boss for the level 6 strike I used every bit of my ammo on, as did my co-op partners, and then we were just throwing grenades...seems to be a tad too much health.

So I've learned more about how to play the game and am really enjoying the combat now. Got my warlock to level 8 and started working on a hunter that's now level 5. I just really hope they smooth out the performance. The gameplay has kind of a jerky feel to it which I think can be attributed to the framerate. Maybe needs some motion blur, too. But the mechanics and quest design are solid, and the RPG mechanics are very fun and engaging. Hopefully the beta performs better.

For bosses, you have to spam sniper rifle and LMG fire or they take forever. And make sure your weapons' levels matches the strike level.

MP has really grown on me, I have some questions. Can anyone help?

-It seems to me that players all have different levels of health, recovery speed (for health regen), and agility (jump height, sprint). This sounds like it will make the predictability of competitive multiplayer really difficult...

-But the info for Crucible says "Level advantage disabled", what does that mean? Does that mean that there is somehow balance or does it mean advantages are negated? What does it mean?

-I understand guns found throughout the game have varying stats as most games do. But in Destiny, it seems you as a player also vary in health, recovery, and speed. This sounds more akin to a class system that caters to a style of play

-How much more powerful can one player really be from another? Does my gear have such a strong effect on my stats? If so, if I somehow have a rare item that gives me much more defensive armor... how is that fair? How is it balanced against the rest of the players?

-I am really worried about the upgrades. Some seem to boost one of the three stats (health, recovery and agility) at the cost of decreasing another. That's fine... but there are class-specific upgrades that sound like they can get insanely unbalanced: Stuff like temporary shield after sprinting, chance of instantly recovering grenade cooldown, etc. Now, there are two upgrades per game: for Titans like me, I have a critical melee attack and a grenade. Can you only have two at a time?

-Furthermore, do upgrades stack or do you choose and commit to a branch/skill tree?

I don't think you understand the PVP very well. Higher levels have no advantages, gun damage doesn't matter, and classes don't take different amounts of damage, afaik. Surprisingly well balanced all things considered, IMO. I'd give it a few more tries if I were you.

Huh? For real? felt like the higher levels were killing me one shot, and it was taking me a whole lot of shooting to get a kill. I was playing the capture mode.

Edit: The warlock appears to have very little armor (in non-pvp) but has an excellent recovery. What this means is that I end up doing a lot of running away till my health regenerates (albeit quickly).

Has there been any word if your character will float over from Alpha to Beta to full release? Having a ton of fun so far. Beat the Devil's Lair with a couple of friends and it was a blast.

This alpha is so fun.

Any tips for pvp? I blow and have to rely on that electric charge gun to get kills. I feel everyone takes more bullets than I do. Maybe it's because I'm a warlock?

Love the game. Love it.

Here's my question:

Do you guys think there will be enough single player content in the full game? I was having a great time with the sections in which you do tiny random missions over and over, but I would love a great story campaign. Do you think there will be a great story?

Here are my thoughts after hitting the alpha level cap, doing the strike a few times, and a round of PvP.

It's much better than the trailers and videos they put out led me to believe it would be. It looks beautiful and sounds great. Getting new loot is fun, but I kind of wish there was more that just three stats. Maybe higher level items will have more stuff on them. The hub city seems kind of small with not much to do, but that could just be because its an alpha.

The strike is a lot of fun and pretty challenging, but the bosses drag on a bit too long. PvP reminds me a lot of Halo (not surprising I guess). The vehicle that shoots rockets is overpowered. My biggest gripe is the seeming lack of variety in the exploration mode. The zone looks great and diverse, but the mini-quests I picked up were all basically "kill enemies until this meter reaches 100%." I'd like to see more "dynamic" stuff, like maybe planting a bomb or capturing a control point.

I redeemed a US code on my USA plus account and I'm playing on my proper Aussie account (that isn't plus) without issue. Hope that helps.

That does help, thanks fellow Aussie GAFfer. :)

Will just buy a US Plus 1 month sub if I can't find a free trial period code anywhere. Currently don't have a sub on my main account so that helps.

Now the long download wait, Australian internet ftw.

Just finished playing after almost 2 hours and I gotta say, I have no idea what I was doing. Some people joined my game out of nowhere and then left 10 minutes later. I just kept walking with no destination.

The PvP was meh. I don't typically enjoy FPS multiplayer, I'm more interested in the single player co-op. Although I do have to give it more time and play the other MP game modes.

Overall I had fun although I had no clue what I was doing. Looking forward to playing with friends.

Day 1 for me!

As a HUGE Halo fan. I am really enjoying Destiny. Its Halo at its core with a mix of borderlands. Even though Reach wasnt my favorite i still enjoyed it. The pvp is intense and reminds me of the old days and i can even use old tactics from previous halos to bait people. I HAD to use Bumper Jumper as my control scheme. No way i was gonna be able do the crazy shit i wanted to do by having default.

Album I'll be updating. http://imgur.com/a/Ae31w#0

Also if you wanna see the intense PVP im talking about. Check out my match

wow thanks for posting this, that double kill around 2:40 was very intense i bet.

I dont think there will be a campaign. It's not even like you have enemies/NPCs with personality like in Borderlands.

However, I did not care for BL.

What I love about Destiny is what is not told: there is such a mystery to the gorgeous lands. And I'd love to think the MMO-esque features will allow all kinds of thriving/historical background information about the world.

I've already noticed some NPCs who deal with relics/things of the past...exploring the world just feels great. I also will expect some live community events that should further make you feel apart of the world.

On that end, I dont care for a "great" story told to me. I want to find it for myself and piece things together and have some room for mystery. I'd hope for some more variety in the enemies though, and I hope they have some cause/interesting boss fights with character. This could be the game's initial weakness.

I would however, really appreciate better VOs, especially that damn announced in multiplayer.

pretty dope game. hard as hell, too.

For real. It would be impossible to balance an MP mode without standardization of things like that.

This alpha is so fun.

Aiming for the head? Try the Pulse Rifle or Auto Rifle, and have your shotgun/melee ready for close range. When I started using the Pulse Rifle I started slowly getting better and understood TTK better.

My friends and I just tried doingthe level 6 strike mission on legend ( I believe that's the name) and failed. Granted, we were levels 6 and 7s while the AI was 8 or 9. We ended up getting to the final boss but we couldn't defeat it so we gave up. The game is really fun.

Honestly, the announcer needs to be yelling "Double kill! Triple Kill! Killtacular!" and "Running Riot! Unstoppable!" or whatever equivalent to Destiny Bungie wants to do.

He sounds so uninterested and he could at least sound involved on that end.

This has become a day 1 based on both E3 and actually playing the alpha. I can already tell I'm going to spend a lot of time with this. Although I will say the voice acting leaves a lot to be desired.

The guns feel like normal shooter guns but in an RPG game with RPG health. It's pretty underwhelming

What do the rarer guns look like? What can they do?

Managed to catch an hour of this last night, and I really enjoyed what I played. I thought I'd miss the map, but with the motion/objective tracker and the areas being fairly compact it didn't cause any problems.

My hunter (awoken/male) is around half way through level 5. Looking forward to doing some of the tougher missions over the weekend. ^_^

I've played for a few hours now and I'm already bored to be honest. I'm only playing by myself and maybe you have to play with friends for it to be fun but it just feels like I'm doing exactly the same thing over and over again with no real story or purpose behind anything.

This game is fantastic. I loooove the challenge in Strike mission. Hope they never nerf it.

You are playing an alpha.

after awhile I just started running for my life as if it were the old Resident Evil games... it gets pretty creepy in those dark areas.

I'm stuck right now though trying to defeat
Gotra and the Hive thingy. (floating enemy)...there's too many enemies, I'm doing something wrong.

I feel the say way. Peter Dinklage as Cortana isn't doing anything for me.

Having a good time with it. The Tower reminds me of the Citadel in the Mass Effect series. That spider in Strike mode was pretty tough i have to say.

So I just got this on PS4 last night (gaffers on IRC were green with envy, apparently Bungie or whatever were sending out codes to Yurop first).

First impressions: I like the character customisation, it has a decent selection of features without becoming too mired in massive numbers of sliders and tickboxes. It has a hairstyle I like! Also I can be a space wizard!

Then onto the game, as mentioned I chose warlock (aka space wizard) and it turns out that in the world of Destiny a space wizard is actually still just a person with guns, just the magic fills the "grenade" function. That's a bit disappointing, but OK.

The game starts outside, and your first objective is to reach a building with a radar in it or something. You can summon a vehicle to do this, it's pretty much like a Star Wars speeder bike. Handles fairly decently, didn't have any trouble driving it.

I'm guessing it's not a cover shooter as I couldn't find a button that would let me use the cover (though I suppose that makes some kind of sense as it is all in first person except when emoting or riding vehicles anyway). Killed some grunts, went into the building, around some corridors, more grunts to kill.

Then you get to a locked door, which you have to summon your "ghost", which is actually Peter Dinklage in the form of a floating glowing diamond thing (he also does the narration/objective instructions). Once the door is open there is a dark staircase to go up (your gun has a flashlight on it which seems to auto activate in the dark, but it doesn't reach very far) and you go up it and what do you know, there's a bunch of more grunts there, considerably more aggressive ones this time. The music makes it super obvious that something like this is gonna happen but it did scare me a bit the first time.

Anyway you kill those guys, go through another bit of corridor and up some more stairs, and then you have a boss fight with an enemy space wizard and his legion of grunts. I did not manage to succeed at this bit as I ran out of bullets and the magic "grenade" takes way too long to recharge.

And that's as far as I got.

That shit is hard when you're undergeared and don't know what to do.

Wow, so 3 of us just randomly decided to go in that Strike mission. We didn't bother to upgrade our gear and only 1 of us was level 6.

That shit is hard when you're undergeared and don't know what to do. We ended up being in there for a long damn time just plinking away at the walker and the sphere and trying not to get all 3 of us killed. That's one serious dungeon.

Holy bullet sponge bosses batman!

But seriously bosses wittle down so slow and the stream of feeder enemies to keep your ammo stocked is so tedious.

Looking forward to dedicate more time on this this weekend. I tried yesterday and did the first mission and played a couple of MP rounds. I had fun with it.

Vehicles are OP though. Especially the fast moving ones with the auto cannons on the front (only got to play one round tonight, so I don't know the name of it D:).

EDIT: PSN is mrchowderclam if anyone wants to partay :D

Started the game late last night and found myself playing till 3:00.

Playing this on the Sony pulse headset is Awesome, the soundtrack is great.
I did not tried competitive PvP yet, will do so later today.
Will try to see how this plays threw remote play.

Game is awesome but the lack of enemy types and it got kinda repetitive is a down but i am guessing & hoping its because its the Alpha version.

Most likely will be day 1 for me.

I feel the say way. Peter Dinklage as Cortana isn't doing anything for me.

I think he sounds great. He's not supposed to be a AI like cortana. Cortana Is one of a kind. She has personality. The ghosts are not one of a kind. There's many of them. They weren't created from human brains like the halo AIs. Peter dinklage is a fantastic actor. I'm sure bungie wanted him to sound like he does here. Not highly talkative and enthusiastic like cortana. More robotic and only exists to help you defeat the darkness.

Literally the same situation just happened to me, lvl 4, lvl 5 (me), and lvl 6. Phew, that took a while...

Felt good once we cleared it though :D

Vehicles aren't really OP at all. Couple sniper shots, group shots, using the SP, close use of shotgun, heavy weapon, and turrets all bring them down.

I do think the Intercepter needs to be a tad slower.

I received my code via PlayStation Notifications too... it is the same code that I received hours ago in my mail but it was the first time to see this notification working.

I almost wish I had given my Alpha code to someone that was more interested in the game. This just isn't hitting the right notes for me.

Holy bullet sponge bosses batman!

Is that really how the game is supposed to play? I got to the Wizard in the first mission and was pretty astounded at what an incredible bullet sponge he was. I assumed I was doing something wrong, and that there's no way Bungie would expect me to empty a dozen clips into him.

I never figured it out though, since I got disconnected from the server and when I came back there was no way to restart or resume my previous mission.

Holy crap, this game is going to kill me. I just sunk 4 hours into it after meaning to sit down for like 45 minutes.

Going to slow it down a bit now, but I'm so glad we got this alpha. Thanks Bungie. I adore this game even more than I thought I would.

Yeah the loot isn't as plentiful as in Borderlands or Diablo. It's something I think they should work on. If they can get a loot system akin to Diablo, they'll have quite the addicting game on their hands.

When I kill a named boss or a tough enemy, I want to see some loot. If I spot a hidden cave, I want to see some loot. If I do really well in multplayer, I want to see some loot. In my dream world there would be different things like gun parts and scopes that you could pick up and mix and match with other guns you pick up. There's just a lot of stuff I'd like to see loot-wise that I'm not seeing.

I disagree, when loot is that plentiful it becomes a chore the handle. If they give you items every cave and every named mob you will delete 90% of it. Having it rare w/non crap stats is the better way to go imo.
