Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Alpha sold me this game. I think not making Beta public free for all (not just preorders) will be a huge mistake. Let everyone and their granny play this game, that way people who are still sitting on the fence about this game will open their wallets to Bungie. Just my 1.99 cents.

The alpha is limited to test their servers. The 'beta' as you mentioned will do just that, if you pre-order. I think a lot will pre order after word gets around ;)

I think it's 25 or 30, but regardless, Bungie has made it clear they don't want reaching cap to take anywhere near as much time as an MMO.

Yeah I remember the stuff saying the level cap means nothing as it's the loot that levels your character.

few things here: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-04-30-how-destiny-turns-into-diablo-when-you-hit-the-level-cap

Bungie said:
"We wanted levelling up and reaching a cap something you don't look at and say, 'well, that will take me weeks so therefore I can't play with my friends who are already at the level cap.'

- My main niggle is how fast it took me to level from 3-8. If level cap is 20 in main game and leveling is this fast i am going to be very disappointed.

Keep in mind they're probably just checking to make sure the leveling system works. I wouldn't expect this to be final progress pace.

Also.. remember that your character is going to carry over into future Destiny titles.

Honestly you can only do so much when you're capped at lvl 8

Really? Well thats disappointing considering I'm already lvl 6 after an hour or so gameplay. There's an area right before your first mission where the grunts keep spawning indefinitely, spent some time there and I was lvl 4 already before even starting the first mission lol.

I'm pretty sure that it'll be either 20-30 as the level cap.

But as DLC comes out they'll raise it just like it was raised with WoW expansions.

Remember guys this is just the start of the next 10 years!

I for one am very much looking forward to it!

I found it boring. It's meant to be kinda Borderlands except with only three different enemies and none of the charm or inspiring visuals?

Telling me this wizard is from the moon isn't enough for me. And what about the monster closet complete with invisible wall? I thought it was 2014.

A poor showing.

- The website support is already phenomenal. The stat tracking, each individual session (including exploration sessions) are tracked and can be accessed individually. The cards you collect in game with additional lore, your characters gear/abilities progression, a world map showing what missions and areas you have access to and more. Bungie still go above and beyond in this area which is fantastic.

Do you have a link to the site? I can't remember what it was and haven't had much luck hunting it down.

You haven't seen all the enemies in the game.

Also, I think the invisible wall is a bug.

The lines for Dinklage also really stand out to me. I think the lines where he talk about the hive wizard would have sounded a lot less silly if, instead of saying "that wizard came from the moon", he should have said "that hive wizard came from the moon". Because when I just hear "wizard" my mind naturally thinks of an old bearded dude in a pointy hat and robe.

The lines are really odd to begin with. It's like the writers and voice director are trying too hard to make ghost seem like an AI who is learning to be human, but its completely unnatural, even for a robot.

Ghost doesn't have the dry monotone of a regular robot, nor does he have cheeky humor. He just sounds like a robot who is depressed.

I agree. If they removed the pre-order requirements and let people who are on the fence, or don't know what the game is, have a chance to play it, sales would probably go through the roof.

Invisible wall? You're playing an Alpha build of one small area, and you think that's gonna be in the final game?

And if all you've done is the Wizard mission, then you have by no means seen ALL the enemies.

This was strange to me, coupled with the fast respawn times of the groups. It's at the point where I will move away from a dead group of enemies because I'm anticipating their buddies to come take their places soon.

I highly doubt that. Enemies come from entrances you can't enter, the walls and floor of which fade to darkness within a metre. The other invisible walls I've encountered are usually height limiting ones to stop you getting on top of buildings.

In a previous test version, it wasn't just an empty door. Hence why I think it's a bug. They aren't afraid to call them monster closets, and monster closets aren't inherently bad, just that the fact that there's nothing to indicate "you can't go here" not being rendered is a bug.

Just did Story mission and some exploration, game seems nice but i admit it's pretty chaotic: by not having a map i went straight to the marker while skipping most of things in the middle. Same goes for loot and skills. But i guess it's normal since it's in beta. Also, you're always heavily outnumbered. And i suck big time at FPS. Well, time to get level cap and then onto pvp!

This. For some reason this game hasn't been properly promoted, for all the money Activision says they're spending on that side of things. But once you actually play it, you will be sold on it.

So I got a Titan and a Warlock to level 8 and a Hunter to level 6 (haven't tried PVP yet).

I don't know if it's just the luck I had but it seemed like the Warlock got better drops lol. I had all my gear uncommon by level 7 on Warlock but on Hunter and Titan struggled to get any uncommons. Hrm...

Summary of the questions asked and answered on that stream Dan Miller did. answers are paraphrased by me:

Will characters carry forward to future Destiny titles?
"yes. we're building a world and it's about you"

Engine descended from Halo?
"No. All new, part of the reason why it's taken 4 years. There might be a few bits of old code in there somewhere"

Kill times going to be changed?
"Probably not"

How many Raids are there?
"Just one" (he went on to explain that it's a pretty involved thing to do The Raid though, so don't look at the number)

Level cap?
"yes, there is one"

Flying vehicles in PvP?
"No"

More hair styles and beards?
"We're going to be adding to Destiny as it goes along"

Male and females have the same hitbox?
He's not exactly sure as he doesn't do the technical stuff, but women and men are the same height. He also mentioned that men and women do in fact wear the same armor in multiple cases.

Any differences between versions functionality wise (ie, enemy count, etc)
"Same build on all platforms"

How are the PS3 and 360 versions?
"PS3 runs great". Mentioned he hasn't played the 360 version in a while - he can't plug in all 4 devkits at his desk because the power will go out from all the power they draw, so he doesn't look at all the versions all the time.

Clans platform agnostic?
"Don't know". Explained he didn't even know Destiny had clans until he saw someone in the alpha with a clan. Bungie is so big now that he actually doesn't know every little feature the game has that isn't pertinent to his job as a designer.

Easiest way to join guild is to simply login into alpha.bungie.net and search for DestinyGAF on the clan tab and you can just join automatically instead of relying on an invite.

Would love an invite as well when you wake up. Thanks bro.
I'm about to crash but send me your PSN via PM or add me: notacosbeykidd

Also, apologies to earvcunanan, that was probably the most glitched out game I've played yet which is odd considering the game was running almost perfect earlier.

I'll try to hop on with all of you guys tomorrow. If you see I'm online just send an invite to your firesquad, and bring your mics!

With legendary gear seeming to all be level 20 i am making the assumption that it is - although it is entirely possible that these are alpha values.
Or they don't want you hitting level 50 for the first stage of end game. Maybe they want to increase level caps/more endgame over time?

Thanks for this.

That one about Raids is really interesting. Sounds like there is one Epic quest.

I'm guessing that is the "Vault of glass" they are talking about here:

I am new to MMO-style games and all they entail so my impressions are coming from someone fresh to this kind of experience but I can definitely see myself playing this game for a long time. I love how expansive it is and how it makes you feel like you are but a small part in a much grander story. I love the interconnectedness of it all. I even found myself enjoying the Crucible which looked dull in previews. This has monster hit all over it

Anyone know how to sprint with Remote Play control scheme?

In bed, shooting things on my Vita! It's so smooooth! But I'd like to know how to run/do gestures !

The level cap is that low, huh? Well I hope there's a lot of content available, because if this thing is on a 10 year plan... I can't entirely see investing too much time into it. I love what I've seen so far, but I really don't want to feel like there's a major lack in content. I don't want to grind out match after match or raid after raid because there's literally nothing to do after the first week.

Anyway, it seems great, but content, content, content. Please.
