Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I only had about 10 minutes to play and visually it's pretty good but i wish the IQ was a little better, it's not crisp enough, is it suppose to get better in that department in the shipped game or this is the final graphics?

Did Bungie mentioned anything about the alpha's visuals not being final?

Don't think i have played an alpha yet where graphics are final. I wouldn't expect it to get MUCH better but i do think between now and release we will see a small increase in IQ among other things.

Normally i would be agreeing with you but the strikes difficulty, especially if 1 or more people are either undergeared, underlevelled or have no sense to stay behind cover (or all of the above) at least require to you listening to someone, if not communicating. Raids i imagine for at least the first year would almost require a mic and i can very easily see after a few months people being booted if they don't, especially if it is a difficult as bungie is claiming.

I can imagine it could come in handy when you need to communicate about the objectives, like in ME3, but I kinda prefer to play the game without the constant chatter. It's been particularly annoying in ME3, when there are two friends in the team, who joke with each other. It just ruins the mood.

Same here, and I'm not the best FPS player by quite some distance. I just kept my distance and plugged away, mopped up the enemies in front and then finished off with the shotgun. Didn't seem tough in the slightest as long as you have a bit of patience.

Yeah, I'm not that experienced either. Had to tone down the difficulty level in both Wolfenstein and Killzone. The über high level enemies in Destiny are hard, but I gather you aren't even supposed to win them in the alpha.

One thing I´m gonna say tho - graphics took a huge hit when compared to the initial revel.

Yea i agree. Can't it be because this is Alpha?

Pretty disappointing.

Year let's hope so, I think that other than IQ it looks great.

the robot is (tyrion) does some horrendously bad voice acting nay nay big time to that

"It can't be... It's the Hive...!" literally sounds like he doesn't give a shit.

Tis a shame that the VOs that you hear most often sound so... off. The PvP announcer sounds bored, and so does Peter Dinklage.

Again not disagreeing at all - i generally mute anyone who is talking in lobby. However if the raids require the same kind of co-ordination as raids in MMO's then i can see mic's almost being a requirement for completion on the first difficulty for the first 6-12 months and permanently on legendary difficulty (until level cap increase).

Only played for less than a hour and enjoying what I'm seeing. The initial start level wasn't a problem (using the super charged pistol came in handy against the Space Wizard). I'll have to try dying in the hub area sometime. Got to play two Control matches (one of them being the big snow area with the vehicles). Took me some time to find my groove in the first match (my team lost). The main gun I was using in the first match didn't sit right with me so I switched weapons in the second game. Things went much better in the second match (my team won pretty easily, so it could be a case of my team was just that good or the opposing team was just that bad). Currently a Level 5 Hunter, so I'll have to do some more matches before taking on the Level 6 quest

Don't blame the Dink when its the voice directors job to tell him if its bad or not.

Yeah, I've noticed most of the VOs sound very tired or like they just don't care lol

Yup the IQ is the only fault I have with the game. Other than that it's fucking perfect.

I'm sure it will improve too before it's release.

I want to run Devil's Lair with some Gaffers! Shoot me a friend request @ magicgatechaos.

Looting is so addictive. I want all the top armor. Shame you can't customize your colors though. I don't want to look like every adam and eve out there but of course it's an Alpha and there will no doubt be a far more extensive (I hope) customization system in the final product.

Randomly explored some underground area on a whim, got to the end and boom I arrived at that highway littered with rusted cars. That's when I said to myself "awww yisss I will love this game".
I'm pretty sure there are armor dyes later in the game ("shaders").

Played for 4 hours last night and so far I'm absolutely loving it. My expectations were pretty high and it has just about reached them.

Control multiplayer is a complete blast. Amazingly intuitive and I love how it balances everyone out in the Alpha to make it competitive. The 2 available maps are varied; one being more vertical and better suited for hunters, the other a more open terrain. Played 6 matches so far and enjoyed every one.

Single player is also very impressive. The graphics, while not jaw dropping are very competent. The skyboxes are amazing and environments are fantastic for exploration. There's just so many different ways to reach your goal.

Bizarrely my favorite part was the tower. The music and stunning vistas, combined with the social element of meeting up with people is just a fantastic addition. I probably spent the best part of 2 hours dancing, pointing and playing football with people.

I'm yet to play the strike mission as I'm waiting on a few friends to get online for my fire team but the initial mission and "free roam" are great and shows off the various aspects of Destiny's gameplay very well.

I can't wait now for the beta to hopefully try out a few more PVP modes. Sparrow racing will be awesome.

If only the level cap was higher than 8. Just found a level 10 piece of armour that is muuuch better than what I'm using.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but loot is obtained upon kill rather than a drop on the ground?

sorry if this has been asked and answered, but what are the white orbs for?
Orbs of Light? They add charge to your Super bar. They're generated when another player kills enemies with their own Super, and they themselves cannot pick up their own orbs.

It's meant to encourage coordination and chaining of Supers within a team.

Loot is picked up. They're the polyhedral things that drop, and they're colored to reflect the quality of the gear. (green drop -> green loot, etc)

Didn't expect much out of this game, but after playing the alpha I'll probably end up buying it. Enjoyed the progression, and had some fun moments with strangers. Almost took down the Walker with some guys which was very intense. I managed to hulk smash on the top of it and saw a few thousands pop off various parts.

Also, not to jump on the bandwagon, but I was also put off a bit by some Dinklage's deliveries. I think the one that stands out is, "It can't be... It's the hive!" or something to that effect.

The white orbs are item drops.

For some reason this game makes me nautious. On PC I always have to change the FOV in games to 90 or 100 if possible however on consoles it's always been fine. For some reason this isnt the case with Destiny though and it is really ruining my experience with the game.

Beta will have more content, so maybe a higher level cap too?

can anyone give me a brief over view of how awesome it is.

My PS4 decided to die yesterday, so haven't had a chance to play it.

(kind of annoyed considering the amount of codes I gave)

SO PLEASE share with a humble skele7on your story!

Is the game challenging?

I made a free roam gameplay video if you wanna check it out. Destiny Alpha Gameplay
I'll say this, the 'speederbikers' are fun as heck!

Don't blame the Dink when its the voice directors job to tell him if its bad or not.

Fair enough. I just hope it gets re-recorded at some point so it sounds like he has a little bit more enthusiasm.

Then again... from a story point of view, maybe the Ghosts are supposed to sound emotionless? idk

???

Check again. 4:24 for example.

I actually went to the exact spot from that demo and went through the sequence. It looks fucking gorgeous, seriously. Now, those dynamic lights and shadows are, to the best of my knowledge, still present in the game.

The lines for Dinklage also really stand out to me. I think the lines where he talk about the hive wizard would have sounded a lot less silly if, instead of saying "that wizard came from the moon", he should have said "that hive wizard came from the moon". Because when I just hear "wizard" my mind naturally thinks of an old bearded dude in a pointy hat and robe.

Thought i had posted my impressions earlier but looks like i didn't:

- The website support is already phenomenal. The stat tracking, each individual session (including exploration sessions) are tracked and can be accessed individually. The cards you collect in game with additional lore, your characters gear/abilities progression, a world map showing what missions and areas you have access to and more. Bungie still go above and beyond in this area which is fantastic.

- The ability to summon your sparrow anytime, anywhere is fantastic.

- The difficulty is almost spot on - strikes are hard and should be hard if you are going in at appropriate levels. Yes the devil walkers are a bullet sponge and some other enemies are too much of bullet sponges as well but i am hoping that is addressed.

- My main niggle is how fast it took me to level from 3-8. If level cap is 20 in main game and leveling is this fast i am going to be very disappointed.

got my first play in tonight, 3 hours disappeared like nothing. this limited alpha is blowing my mind, i already can't wait to play the beta after this ends and the full game after that. this might be the game i sink many hours into, i haven't gotten that so far this gen. lots of good games but nothing to really keep me invested after i've ran through it.

As another person already said. That specific part you're refeering to isn't in the alpha. The only thing I can really see as being different visually, is that the lighting in the alpha might have had the HDR levels lowered slighty. But that's just from memory, I'm about to head to school, so can't really check right now. Will check later though.

Is that confirmed? Bummer.

I read that Bungie wants players to focus on collecting better gear rather than levelling, which makes sense as it's a loot-driven game like Diablo. Farming loot at level cap is what endgame is all about.

Alpha sold me this game. I think not making Beta public free for all (not just preorders) will be a huge mistake. Let everyone and their granny play this game, that way people who are still sitting on the fence about this game will open their wallets to Bungie. Just my 1.99 cents.

Is that confirmed? Bummer.

Haven't seen anything over level 20 in anything ever. Not in the Alpha, not in past videos.

I'm okay with it though, because the game feels like it's gonna be more gear based than 'skill' based. (skill referring to abilities in game, not individual playing ability)
