Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

My thoughts after playing it:

The Bad

Acting: Some of the worst acting I have ever heard in any video-game. The actor for the character I played seemed to be reading his lines with no emotion or connection to the character. He sounded lifeless.

Isn't everyone's character a mute protagonist? I was under the impression that the person talking is your GHOST unit, not your character, and isnt it suppose to be Peter Dinklage?

Good: design, music, graphics, lore, AI, gunplay, seamless co-op

Bad:

PvP that rely on gear/levels, skill is much less of a factor when you outgear your opponents.

Matchmaking for legendary difficulty is really bad, we had really good group and plowed through everything up to sphere boss, everyone being level 8, then a level 5 guy joins on sphere boss... the fuck, his average life time was around 5 seconds I think and he did zero to none damage to the boss.

Loading times are not good IMO.

Overall I think bosses have too much HP, just takes way too much time to kill them, even with a good group.

Edit:
Awoken Female is my new favorite Sci-Fi Wifu, replacing Liara.

I played this for about an hour and a half and honestly got bored of running around the same map visiting the same few locations for missions and encountering the same enemies in the exact same location..just levelled up (why? Why level up the enemies too? It's unfun to spend the same amount of time as before on an enemy even after you've levelled up to be more powerful)

Please tell me the final game won't be this, it's like a poor version of borderlands with sandbox but not open world gameplay. And honestly quite generic.

Huh? The enemies don't level with you...

I'm pretty sure all the speech comes from your little drone buddy. It would explain the lifeless like voice over.

Wait, people thought the voice DIDN'T come from the drone? :o

Also, while I'm not a fan of Game of Thrones, I do watch it so it's nice to have a familiar voice (Peter Dinklage) guide you.

Do we know how much content and max level you can reach in the Alpha?

I want to make sure to do and visit everything I can.

So far Earth, The Tower, the Moon and the Crucible. I'm at level 9.

How much more is there?

Liking it so far, went into it pretty much blind, but damn, I sure hope that voice companion is just a place holder. The most lifeless, uninspired character I've ever heard. Now that that's out of the way-there is a real gem here. There's a sense of progression and discovery that I didn't expect the game to capture. Rolling out to an open clearing to see a bunch of randoms fighting and flying around caught me off guard...had forgotten about the mmo aspects. I would love to see this one succeed, as I was just on the fence before, but more I'm a fan :)

I wish this alpha lasted a little longer, with the beta out in a month I understand why. Hardline beta collecting major dust

EA Data center staff: "ok, yes data collection coming along nicely. Bug reporting is up and being assigned to the teams...WHERE THE FUCK DID EBERYONE GO?!?"

Derpcrawler, PVP is not based on levels or gear. It's all normalized and it's skill.

The Devil Stander and Purple Ball fights in the strike were such miserable, tedious experiences, I find it baffling that Bungie dudes are bragging about their raids taking 4-16+ hours to beat. Who could possibly want to do that?
Hopefully the beta will feature some mobile bosses, because these guys were about as fun as shooting nerf guns at a wall. Even recycling Halo 2 bosses would be an improvement over these, which is a really scary thought.

Wait. What? They said that? 4-16 hours? For what? It's not like you have to master some difficult boss mechanics. I hope their idea of making bosses more difficult doesn't equate to just making them near impossible to damage while throwing constantly respawning trash at you because that would be awful.

The complaints against this game are astounding.

The amount of polish and depth in graphics, gameplay and overall packaging live up to Bungie's lofty reputation.

The Borderlands comparison is tired and frankly, a bit ridiculous. The gunplay is more weighty and meaningful in Destiny, as well as the loot game being much more streamlined. I feel like I'm playing a shooter with the amount of "oomph" as Halo, while having a more open structure as Borderlands.

The music, sound and general audio design compliments the slick UI and pristine presentation fed throughout every menu in the game.

I don't know what Borderlands others were playing, but this is a game in a league of it's own. I'm glad someone learned to balance the RPG elements of loot games with hefty shooter gameplay.

Was going to post my impressions but this pretty much encapsulates exactly how I feel - particularly about some of the rubbish criticism in this thread. This is probably the most polished game I've played in several years. Fantastic stuff and hats off to Bungie!

So how long do I have to keep shooting this Devil Walker? I'm doing it solo which probably doesn't help, but I've been shooting at it for 20 minutes and I have done ten percent damage.

Man, it would be so good if we could fly our main ship between words, even if we have to hit a loading screen along the way. To fly from the tower down to the earth or to mars would make put this game among my top 10 ever, the way it's looking right now.

Maybe in Destiny 2...

Can someone explain what ADS means? I hadn't heard the expression before this thread.

Aim Down Scope I assume.

EDIT: Heavily Beaten.

I like the ADS personally, but I do wish the weapons were just a little bit more accurate when run and gunning.

This game is great. It's actually better than I expected. I like the setting quite a bit more than borderlands, which I love. The PVP is nice too, Borderlands could have definitely used PVP.

I actually woke up an hour early today just to play it some before work.

The random mission thing with the beacons is awful. Perhaps the most bored I've ever been playing a shooter. "Go there, stand there, done. Go there, shoot that, done. Go there, hit the scan button, done." This can't really be a mode in the game, can it? While I find the game to be pretty, New Russia's depths remind me of Dragon Age 2 where every place I enter looks and feels exactly the same. Everything except the voice acting and framerate feels solid, but the game's missions better be a lot more diverse and fun in the final game. This is just an alpha so I hate being this critical, but as it stands now Borderlands is way more fun than this. Especially the non-shooting powers, grenades, dialogue, guns etc.

They have some interesting voice actors. The guy from Fringe obviously. Claudia Black voices one of the vendors. And while doing the beacon missions I heard Gina Torres.

My thoughts:

Level 7 right now

1. I love how hard it was to kill the boss.... it took us 30 minutes (me and two other random players). Those captains are a pain in the ass though.

2. Graphics took a dive from the player creation to the actual game. I was stunned how good the player creation was, then the game popped up and i was like Meh...

3. This game is Knights of the Old Republic meets Halo meets Mass Effect which is good.

4. The Game of Thrones Dinklage dude needs to be fired. His voice does not fit this game and its lifeless.

5. I dig how the enemies have levels above them. I was on that level 4 mission and decided to go deep into a random cave/basement and their were some level 12 dudes way down who would of killed me in 3 seconds, so I bolted. Very nice to see this.

Overall, I will buy. If your not a fan of the three games I mentioned above, then I would skip it.

Does all the Alpha consist of this Old Russia level?
I'm playing the level 4 explore (second option) where there are endless mini objectives, with all those beacons, it feels like grinding, does it ever end? How many missions do i have to do there in order to complete it?

It's really tiring.

Can you sell items you don't want ?

Also in game because i've joined the gaf clan can I access it and see whose online and whats going on etc?

Up early playing this for a bit. A couple things I hope they improve are:

1) Field of View (make it adjustable). After playing FFXIV for so long I found myself constantly trying to pull back the camera to see more.

2) Make loot/ammo drops more colorful or add more of a visual effect to them. Many times I overlooked ammo for my weapon (usually primary weapon) so I hope that is tweaked.

Overall, I am going to pre-order this game later today, I think the final product will be great.

Forgive me if this has been answered (it most likely has been):

The ratings for the guns: is the number just the rarity of it or the actual effectiveness? I have a gun that it's in the upper 90's from the raid I completed, but the individual characteristics of it seem lower than some guns I have that are in the 30's. Am I reading the stats wrong?

Either way, I'm having a ton of fun with the alpha so far. Found it nice and challenging in parts. The PvP was "OK" but the main draw for me were the missions. Can't wait to play more.

I only got an hour or so in last night, but I'm loving it so far. Looks great and plays just like the combo of Halo and Borderlands I'm was hoping for.

I'm playing as a Hunter currently. Hope to try all the classes this weekend and find the one I like best. I should be able to play all afternoon/evening today.

Lol. This game may not be for you...

Played some more last night before going to sleep and I have to say that this game is glorious, it has pretty much everything a gamer like me could want (well not everything, it lacks GORE, seriously Bungie where is my gore?) You can see your character in third person whenever you like, you can sit down chilling admiring the vista if you like, you can dance, bow, etc.

Gunplay is exquisite in how Enemy Reacts to being shoot at, that is one of the things most shooters fail at, animations for when you kill something, I know the game lacks gore and it makes me sad but the sounds of the weapons and the enemies animations and reactions makes up for it, I simply love it and is very addicting.

The Tower for when you want to chill out with some friends if you like or to make some friends is a brilliant idea that could be not original I dont know but ismy first time experiencing this kind of social integration, there you can buy stuff and all, brilliant.

Atmosphere, graphics, framerate, all are great/incredible, gun models are great, your character model is very good detailed, love it all.

The game is not boring, on the contrary is addicting in a RPG kinda way, you always want to continue exploring maybe finding a super leveled enemy that will kill you in one hit (Fuck you underground cave monster).

I only found one loot chest, maybe I didn't looked hard enough or somethig.

I played a match of The Crucible and I got destroyed, I made like 8 kills and got killed like 20, I don't care because is really fun and your deaths are not there to see so you don't get depressed, I loved that to be honest, but I have to level up in order to be competitive there.

All in all I really loved the Alpha of this game and I will buy the game full price, you can almost imediatly feel teh love the devs put in this game, a labor of love indeed.

Thanks Bungie for let me play this Alpha!!

Took a few screenshots, game vistas are incredible.

Never having played MMOs, Halo, or much of Borderlands I can't really comment on how the game is like any of those, but I just can't get over how polished something, which is apparently classified as an alpha, is. I've been looking for a sci-fi shooter for a while that I could enjoy. I had high hopes for Dust 514, but the controls and feel of it just ruined it for me. Played the first mission and poked around the Tower for a bit yesterday evening and I feel like this is a game I could really spend some time with.
