Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I have played for 4 hours and the game is good, its deeper than I thought.

What I like:
Controls feel tight and responsive
Love the ease you can jump into friends games
The skill/talent/leveling system is great and based on how much you use your abilities, I love this (think Ratchet and Clank's guns)
Enemies re-spawn quickly so you don't have to wait for a long time for drops (yes there are drop quests)
Quests auto-complete no cashing in
PvP is fast, fun and fluid plus with the bounties you can pick up (max 5, think PvP quests) gives you nice PvP progression, I am not a PvP FPS player at all.

What I don't like:
It seems you can, at least as of now, only have 1 quest at a time.
Quests can lead you away from other quests so sometimes you are running back and forth, not huge but kinda tedious. Having the ability to pick up multiple quests would remedy this.

This game has taken me by surprise I was losing faith in it as Bungie seemed to confused on what their game was, I can tell you this it's good.

PSN: clean_mod

Created a Hunter and played for a bit before going to work. Still working with the moves and controls, but doing alright this far.

How does one get into the Gaf group? My PSN is MrDresden if that helps.

I didn't really bother playing Bungielands and instead opted to just try out the multiplayer. It's pretty fun. Someone linked an impression in another thread that said it felt more like CoD, but I don't see what they're talking about. Its essentially Halo with optional ADS, or maybe I just suck with ADS and do better just shooting from the hip

For awhile I actually forgot I was playing Destiny and thought "this could be Halo 5 if these were Spartans"

Just got to Level 6, some giant walker came down in a random event, only me and one other guy were in the area so we got it down to 25% health but couldn't finish it off in time.

Game is pretty fun, I got one mission where the waypoint system led me to some cave that seemed impossible to climb up in...had to abandon that and pick up another.

If there's a GAF group/clan, send me an invite - PSN ID is Admodieus

Well it's more Halo at this point than Halo since they're not making it anymore

Played a bit last night. Played the first mission and explored the tower. It plays well for the most part. I did not like how some rooms will respawn as soon as you turn the corner. I am looking forward to getting some more time with Destiny.
i agree with this

What's with the horrendous accuracy drop during movement? I feel like its a subtle hint that Bungie prefers us not to lone wolf much.

nothing stops this lone wolf!

JQ6rjJA.jpg

i actually found the enemy really easy, the only thing hard to "lone wolf" the hell out of it is the random events at least at my current level (5)

also i agree that the shotgun recoil is awful imo

Haha, level 1-4 is a breeze because they did the first 3 for you before you even started. =)

Ha! Didn't know that. Thanks! :D

I agree. I'm stuck on level 5 and I'm currently doing missions in Free Roam over and over again. It's definitely a boring point.

I also agree with the need for NPCs in Old Russia. The map doesn't feel very alive.

Also, is it just me or is the Revolver slightly OP?

I saw someone using the Revolver primarily. It doesn't have a lot of bullets though, right?

I so want to continue the story but also annoyed that I have to do these things over once the final (and even beta) hits.

There are plenty of rumors flying around, but we don't know for sure. I heard that the retail game will have 3 planets to explore at launch, so we will see. The alpha is only a teaser, so I'm optimistic that the beta will probably reveal another playable planet and enemy type. If Bungie is dedicating 500 people to work on the game, it's gotta be massive even for a shooter. Borderlands had more or less 30 hours of content (excluding the DLC) and Gearbox probably had 10% of the budget of Bungie. Borderlands 2 is even longer (how long to beat report 103 hours on average for the main story + extra for the GOTY version) and Gearbox had a higher budget to make it, but it's hard to compare to Destiny since we only see a glimpse of it. I'm thinking that it should have more content, but reaching level 20 isn't supposed to be a very long process.

Bungie is going from short and sweet campaigns to something that is meatier, so there's no way to tell how they executed on the transition (especially since it's not a pure campaign experience given that you can do strikes or exploration in between, just like FF XIV mix it up as you level toward 50 with dungeons where you need to group).

My main concern is, I hope there's a definite "ending," even Destiny is seen as an MMO. I want there to be a huge payoff when I kill the big SOB waiting for me at the end. :D

I like his role too. His voice is soothing.

Is Dinklage's voice supposed to be coming from a machine? If so, that kinda makes more sense. He delivers it a little flat and we all know Dinklage can act as well as anyone.

Only complaints from me so far are:

Long loading times (it gets annoying if you just want to hop on and shoot stuff).

Enemies respawning happens way too quickly and in the same area every time (hope it's just due to being in alpha).

Jumping high sometimes doesn't work as intended and I glide instead. I've died once or twice because of this but no biggie.

Better tutorial on abilities, supers, and whatnot. Might be a non-issue since we're in alpha.

Overall though, loving it so far. Visuals, music, gunplay and such are top-notch. You can tell Activision spent a lot of money on the game and it shows. I also like that the game reminds me of Mass Effect (in a good way).

Well, it's a fun game. 30 fps is an incredibly huge bummer for me and feels just wrong, but otherwise it works pretty nicely and should be entertaining with friends if there's enough content. The strike mission was pretty intense on public with two underleveled teammates. I played one crucible match and it was ok, but I'm not really interested in that. Random observations:

- Very important: The alpha doesn't show much in the way of builds and skills, so I hope that there's enough variety in the final game.

- Scout rifles seemed maybe kind of underpowered compared to auto rifles of the same level. Needs moar damage.
- Hits need... something. A bit more oomph. High-impact weapons do stagger, but if I'm peppering the shit out of a shieldless guy with an auto rifle or shotgunning him in the face, there should be some feedback besides the health bar dropping.
- The world feels kind of empty and flat. Obviously this being an alpha test has a lot to do with that, but there's not much character in the tower, NPCs or voiceovers. The overall vibe is nice and dreamy, though.
- Having enemies constantly respawn at a few fixed points in explore mode feels like a cheap MMO and breaks immersion.
- I felt the loot hooks starting to sink in around level 7-8. That's a good thing.

DestinyGAF guild invite? PSN is Catfax

Hey can someone please invite me on DestinyGAF guild?

I was playing with Sidious yesterday. So much fun.

PSN:ShadownetX

Thank you (:

How does one get into the Gaf group? My PSN is MrDresden if that helps.

I'm not sure how to invite, but I think none is needed (it wasn't for me).

I don't agree with peoples comments about Peter Dinklage's voice acting. He's voicing a machine. Technology sprung from The Traveller. I would find it REALLY weird if he sounded energetic and human like. I prefer the tone of voice he's using.

Yeah. I agree.

This isn't some cooky treasure finding cell shaded game. It's after humans have pretty much been wiped out. I think flat makes sense. I think it could be improved a bit by maybe dimming his voice, adding an echo, and decentralizing it a bit just so it doesn't sound like an inner monologue. But besides that, I'm okay with it.

Yeah, idk. I hate the competitive MP so far. The movement is so, so floaty, and the vehicles are beyond OP. I also constantly get one or two-shotted by people, so I bought a gun that is much better than my starting gun. Loved in in PvE. But, I couldn't equip it in the PvP. WTF?!

Gorgeous game, though. I've lone wolfed it so far, hoping this game is a lot more fun in a fireteam. Not canceling the pre-order just yet! Will be looking for GAF clan people... I'd like to experience one of these events / boss fights.

Just got done playing for about 3 hours.

I really think Bungie are onto a winner with this. It's ridiculously addictive. Shotgun in PVP needs to be nerfed hardcore though, because right now it is stupidly OP.

A more obvious on screen indicator for loot on the ground would also be appreciated.

30 fps is an incredibly huge bummer for me and feels just wrong, but otherwise it works pretty nicely and should be entertaining with friends if there's enough content. .

I would assume it's locked to 30 fps for the alpha/beta/demos.

They said at their conference that they will do 60fps on ps4 when it's released.

Unless I'm missing something

"I've got a baaaad feeling about this"

"It's the hive!"

Come on those lines were just badly executed. Took me out of the moment. Cortana always felt pretty natural and expressive as well, and didn't feel out of place IMO

The first of those two lines was fine imo. The second one though, yeah...

I really think bungie should edit Dinklage's voice to make it sound more articifial and AI like, I think that would help some.

Also to Dinklage's defense, I think much of my issue so far with his role is that a lot of his dialogue seems to transition really strangely. After you kill the Hive wizard in the story mission for instance, he says "the hive haven't been on earth in centuries, that wizard came from the moon", The way the second part of the sentence get's added into the statement just feels so weird and out of place to me. It feels like there should be something else in between to make what is being said seem more coherent.

I rolled a Warlock, and I'm curious: is there a way to have your secondary weapon not be a shotgun? I thought it was Borderlands style weapon equipping where you can equip whatever you want, and bought a pistol, but found that it's classified as a primary weapon.

I think its more of an issue with Bungie not being the marketing type. I trust them though and knew I wouldn't be disappointed.

They didn't say such thing.

The final game will be 30fps.

Did anyone have any trouble with their in-game friend list or with Fire Team invites? It was a big problem for me last night. I couldn't find GAFfers in my friend list, even though they are in my PSN friend list nor could I join their party when trying to accept their invitation. I posted about it on the Alpha Feedback forums.

I tried to invite some of my PSN friends into my Fire Team through the Roster, but their names did not show up on the friend list even though they were already in-game. And when they sent me an invite to join their Fire Team, accepting the invite did not place me into their Fire Team. Instead, I got a message saying that the Fire Team was full; this was not true, as the Fire Team I tried to join had only 2 members in it.

A workaround I found was to quit out of Destiny, then accept the party invitation through a PSN message, which would automatically launch the game and let me join the Fire Team. Also, I think an invite could be sent in-game, as opposed to using a PSN party invite, would be a much smoother process.

And at one point in my play session the Friend List showed up as being completely blank, and exiting and re-entering the Roster did not fix it. The problem resolved itself after a few minutes.

I hope you guys can address this problem soon. Thanks for all the hard work!

I managed to get a Pulse Rifle (Fusion Rifle) (with extra fire damage) at a shop (NPC) in the Tower that I could replace the Shotgun with.

I managed to join a gaf based fireteam last night fairly easily, though even though I had 10 people on my FL playing the game, only 5 showed up. Maybe they were in groups that were already full?

I really don't know.

Are there heavy weapons in the alpha?

so far the only special weapons I've found are shotguns and fusion rifles

So I am along in liking Dinklage? His voice is so soothing. I really enjoy it.

Remote play works surprisingly well. Have yet to try it with a DS4, but I am ridonkulously excited. Is there any way to remove your helmet in game? My exo has such a pretty face. I wanna show the world. :)

I don't know if there is some sort of networking issue going on, but I very rarely come across other players in Explore. Is anyone elses Old Russia's barren of other players, or is it just me?

I never have other people in my Tower either.

For me it's less the bullet sponge aspect and more the very boring design of the boss encounters. I was really hoping they would take a cue from MMO and RPG encounter design. Fights with multiple phases, mini-objectives, strengths and weaknesses vs certain weapons/abilities etc. Mobs should never respawn during a boss fight unless there's some way to stop them to and you were unable to do it for instance.

Right now the two fights in the available strike are just battles of attrition with the only discernible progression being a yellow bar. It's an early fight designed for players that aren't going to have many weapons or abilities open to them so hopefully these encounters get more complex in later levels and this isn't indicative of their design philosophy.
Regular enemies have to respawn during Destiny's (early?) boss battles, otherwise you'd never get to use your super more than once per fight (and even that might be a luxury).
Hopefully endgame cooldown reduction will be significant, because right now supers feel more like a rare power weapon than a Guardian's innate ability.

Yep. Once you pick up a special weapon that fits, you can equip it. Rolling my Warlock now with a sniper rifle and it's awesome. :D

Also, I joined DestinyGAF! Woohoo!

Just joined DestinyGAF, can't wait to get back and play more later. Looking for ppl to play with, add me on PSN = Lkpr

I really don't know.

Read my post again. I tried to join a group that was not full, but couldn't. Instead I got a message saying the group was full (not true).

Rolling my second character and got the Titan up to level 6. There's way more depth in re areas then I realized. The explore in the first time I was running back and forth between the level 2 and 4 areas. But there's whole sections I missed that time. Even the starter mission had level 9 and 11 guys on this side route. Titan is fun. Very spartan like. But I miss the charged shot and knofe throw on my hunter.

Psn DarkKnight77

I kind of wish the game was third person only after seeing how great the armor can look.

I'm happy it's fps and not tps given how stiff teh tps animations in the Tower are :P.

I would love for some better ways to admire how my character look in that game than what are currently in place for that. Viewing individiual pieces up close in the inventory by going into detail makes it clear how gorgeous the armor piece are, especially the those epic lvl 20 ones that the vendor sell. But you can view your character up close atm, seems like a shame

I actually think a lot of the voice acting is good, his various lines when right after you spawn in Old Russia are very well delivered. But almost all of his lines in the story mission are terribly written imo, making the his lines come of as sounding really stupid.

I don't like the chromatic aberration effect. I hope they remove it in the final game, or at least significantly reduce it.

Apart from that, I'm quite pleased with the graphics. I just hope they can achieve a truly locked 30fps when the game releases in September.

Now that I know the level cap will be 20, I am afraid that there will not be enough content. I had hoped there will be 10-20 maps as big as Old Russia to explore in the final game, but I fear there will be only one map per planet (Earth, Moon, Mars, Venus), which would be massively disappointing.

Chicago is going to be in the game at some point, so at least Earth should end up with multiple areas to explore. I'm not sure if we know of any other planets with multiple co firmed maps though.

That's what the Alpha is for. There is an Alpha feedback forum where I would post your concerns.

Gonna be playing this a lot more today. I think I already posted it, but anyone that wants to squad up feel free to add me on PSN! My username is monsterfracas_

REMINDER

This game is set to play with friends only as default. Go into your roster via the options button and click the arrow to change to anyone. Before I did this I didn't see anyone else. After people were entering my games, the tower was full of people.

Not sure if this is true. Only one of my PSN friends has a PS4/the alpha (And I never ran into him), I didn't change any settings, and I saw tons of random people on the Tower and ran into people running around in Old Russia several times.

I'm not a big FPS fan, I don't really like Halo or Borderlands (which seem to be the two biggest "inspirations"), and I've never played an MMO. But... I really really like this game, based on the Alpha. The bosses seem a bit too bullet spongy, and I got kicked from the server (and thus to the main menu) trying to upload a video to Facebook because it suspends the software. Hopefully that's fixed somehow. Overall I think Dinklage is ok. He does sound a bit bored I guess, but he's robo-AI companion, they just went a more stoic route. There are certain lines that are delivered terribly though ("I have a bad feeling about this... It's the hive!")

But yeah I really dug the alpha overall. I went from only being marginally interested in the game to probably going to preorder.

Hopefully they figure out/allow cross-platform play with PS3, because I have several friends with PS3s who are probably getting the game.

Your super just recharges on it's own as far as I could tell, no? I seem to recall a bunch of times where I got the prompt that it filled while I was just wandering around doing nothing. Not to mention you'd still be attacking the boss to fill it.

My main concern is, I hope there's a definite "ending," even Destiny is seen as an MMO. I want there to be a huge payoff when I kill the big SOB waiting for me at the end. :D

Hmm, maybe in 10 years since the main antagonist of Destiny seems to be an entity known as the darkness (the destructive equivalent of the Watcher). :P
