Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Just got a triple super kill as a Titan in my last crucible match, most satisfying button press ever. And of course the recording bugged -_-. I'm all over the place performance wise in PvP, my KDA so far went from 1.2 to 0.24 to 2.87

Random thought:

A shooting range in the lower decks of the Tower would be cool to test out your new weapons.

No I've seen it too, it's pretty bad. It's been pulling me left and right in crazy amounts. They'd better have an option to turn it off.

hmmm weird... maybe its because i just got done re-playing Red Faction Armageddon... and the aim assist in that game is crazy... R1 and it pulls super hard to the nearest enemy...

I honestly didnt notice it at all in Destiny.. i even thought it was kinda nice NOT having aim assist lol!

Weird, the spider tank boss in the strike is literally the only place I've ever run out of ammo.

Same, as far as running entirely out of ammo goes. Special ammo's another story, though x.x

Honestly, if they're going to keep flooding you with grunts in those boss fights, they should at least make them drop ammo. Nothing like having like, 4-8 sniper shots when you go into the final boss(if you're lucky, since you'll need to get ammo after the spider), that barely scratches it, and now you have to spam your primary the rest of the fight x.x

Unless, of course, you buy ammo consumables...

I absolutely love how even after you hit level 8 there is still tons of replay value due to your abilities continuing to get upgraded.

Even now I'm finding new and more powerful weapons to replace my old ones. Shame armor is a total bitch to find that is anything but equal or worse than your existing setup. Guess that's the price of the Alpha being locked to a level 8 max. Can't really get decent stuff armor-wise.

Whatever though, tons of fun still to be had for this nugget of accessibility Bungie gave us. Wonder what opens up for the beta.

Also tried the Strike mission for the first time. DAMN THAT IS FUN.

The game is awesome, no real big complaints so far. The strike mission and the bosses were especially fun (and challenging).

edit: and the aim assist is no more pronounced than any other console shooter out there, from what I've been able to tell.

what? youre kidding right? i didnt even NOTICE aim assist thats how light it is... i just assumed there was no aim assist... you cant spam r2 and have the reticle pull towards an enemy.. i didnt notice it pull towards anyone actually....

No I've seen it too, it's pretty bad. It's been pulling me left and right in crazy amounts. They'd better have an option to turn it off.

I also assumed for a moment that there was no aim assist, since it's been such a light touch for me overall. I've had the aim-assist pull my reticle dramatically one time, and it was jarring because it hadn't happened in the several hours of play time up to that point.

The enemy spawns so fast I didnt have the time to change my gear after I wipe up a small patrl group, they respawned in like 1 minute, I advanced a little more an saw a guy farming the dripship enemy spawns.

Also I dont like the option to Teleport back to the space in indoor buildings like if it was magic

You cant spawn the ground vehicle but you can spawn you space ship, what?

It should be locked too to use it in open space.

Eh. That would just make things annoying when you finish a mission that sends you through a building and you want to leave. And then you'd just have to either go to character select or close and restart the game to have the same end result. No point.

Quick impressions after first mission.

Game controls flawlessly on the DS4. I'm reminded how good this controller is every time I play a FPS. Which is just so nice because the DS3 was so difficult for me

Game is fun but damn do Bungie need to hire some programmers that can for once make a game engine that can do the art justice I know it's cross gen but I was pretty shocked how ugly it is.

some of my main concerns with the Alpha so far
first thing ahead i like the game so far, dont get me wrong on that one :)

- insane amount of aim assistant, never played a game with more
Feels like Halo's level of magnetism. I am okay with it insofar as it makes ADS less reliant (meaning people can opt to hipfire, which is what this game should be about, like Halo/Killzone)
- half turnspeed while running, what an odd idea
Sprint. You can't turn like this in real life, and this is absolutely a COD habit that needs to be kicked. I think if Sprint is going to be in this game, then half turnspeed absolutely is necessary. It makes it less twitchy, and makes sprinting a conscious effort as opposed to a mindless default action.
- slightly less turnspeed while jumping, what sense does that make...
Not sure I noticed this.
- cannot shoot while gliding (Warlock)
Can't you? Do you mean while you hold the glide button down? Is this different from the Titan's?
- general movement is extremly clunky, you just cannot develop a proper movement flow because each jump is taking away a noticeable amount of your running-pace
and jumping is required left and right, means you deaccelerate quite often
I use the "Jumper" button layout to put jump on the shoulder button, while maintaining my thumbs on the sticks. I find ADS to be too powerful in this game and feel that having to ADS while you're jumping/gliding becomes to cumbersome, but it seems the best idea in that case is to stay grounded. I wish the game would slightly boost the cross-hair visibility to be like Halo's, as opposed to CODs' crosshairs.
- gliding is a toggle feature by default on the controller instead of a hold feature, and since i cannot shoot while gliding i need to double click in order to shoot again after a double jump
- vehicles are too strong and too much on the map
I wish you could hijack vehicles. I think vehicles are going to be fine after people unlock more abilities, specifically heavy weapons like rockets
- Special Attacks except for the Golden Gun are a guaranteed "get me out of this situation" card even for the biggest noobs
but seeing how much aim assistant there is even the Golden Gun is an almost guarantee
I think I agree. It occurs too frequently with 6 players, which is my problem. I'd personally vote for like 25% more XP to get a special attack. Specials ARE the "get out of this situation" attack, but I can get 2-3 in a match, which IMO is way too much. Players literally use it instantly as they get it, when it should be one of those "I have one shot to turn the battle" sort of deals.

- right analogstick movement speed is too low, even Halo 4 was faster i think (maximum turnspeed is too low)

generally the aim assistant and the low turnspeed are my main concerns, i dont see why Bungie always goes for so slow maximum turnspeeds in their games
any other modern AAA title uses at least twice the analogstick speed

Keep in mind my experience is mostly from PvP

So how does the game populate online players? I've only encountered other players in sprawls of open area, is that the only time I will see others? It's kind of cool to randomly show up and help out a guy who's struggling.

it could give you the option to return to the entrance or continue exploring for you own.

I'm not quite sure what to do anymore besides MP. The lvl cap is holding me back. And good item drops are a rarity.

Gah! It's like someone gave me a small piece of a cake and won't let me have anymore. Dammit Bungie. :P

Really enjoying what I've played so far. I have been in media blackout about this game, but it's obviously a Bungie game. It's more or less Halo, but somewhat bleaker. The graphics are good, but not great. I think the colors are a bit too washed out.

Just finished playing, i started with an extremely negative opinion but i have to say it is good. It's just a Borderlands clone but playing feels so much better

Are you putting words in my comments?

Come on, I said "it could" not "I like" or "I personally". Jesus Dax

I don't mean to put words in your mouth, but I am trying to understand what you're saying. Having the option to be put at the entrance of a building to have to go into orbit, when you could just cut the middleman and go directly to orbit, seems like a roundabout way to solve...the believability of going into orbit from anywhere on the map?

I played some pvp a little while ago and 3 other people were in the gaf clan. I wondered if they were really destinygaf or if people are just joining becuase it's a popular clan

Great demo. The boss fights in the dungeon took us a while because we had ammo issues but it was a lot of fun. Fantastic art direction, plays and feels like Halo. I was honestly surprised by how big the map was.

I wish there was more collectibles and the loot was physically in the game Borderlands style instead of just thumbnails.

I like Dinklage and for the most part his emotionless robot voice is fine but some of the lines and the delivery is cringe worthy. I don't know if this is because it is bad or if it is because I picture a bored Tyrion reading off a parchment.

MP has fantastic potential.

Yeah I'm pretty much the same. PvP is the only thing keeping me playing, I need that progression and there's not much in the Alpha, which is fine.

Just throwing this out there, Guardians are dead, chosen and revived with space magic by the Traveler.

The Ghosts are essentially what keep us alive etc. We exist through magic. There's little reason to explain anything beyond "Space Magic".

Whether it be reviving or the ability to instantly warp back to space, Space Magic.

Anyone know anything about the error code cattle? :( doesn't let me leg into the servers and bungie website doesn't help worth a shit.

Also getting error code cattle, and error code centipede. Can't play.

Bungie is actively tracking this general networking error. Your disconnect was reported the moment it occurred. Please try to join the game again. If you are unable to connect, it could be a result of tests that we are currently conducting. Watch help.bungie.net and @BungieHelp for updates about the Destiny Alpha.

Yeah, totally. Didn't previous demos show characters picking up gun drops after defeating a boss? That instant payoff is something they should keep, and shouldn't be sacrificed to help distance themselves from Borderlands comparisons.

I was not fond of it at first, but i really liked having no maps now.

Even though the maps and markers always lead you through the same pathways, it feels fresh each time because the encounters and things to see expand in scope because you would take a long time to figure out if you really explored everything.

I think it's good, too. It feels really good to play, and has addictive qualities, like some sort of Halo distilled with other games blend.

That said, it better be if they poured 500 million dollars into this game. If they end up messing everything up, this could be a catastrophe for the companies involved.
