Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Quick question guys: I see that there are these crates with different types of ammo; like "special" ammo, and "heavy" ammo. How does that work exactly? Do I have to somehow toggle on these unique ammo types, or are they automatically added to your weapon when you open one of those crates? What do these unique ammo types do anyway?

There is, but there's only one of those missions included in the alpha.

And there's not really any story behind it either. Pretty much just given an objective with minimal explanation or context. Which is fine for an Alpha mission, but I hope there's some solid depth to the story/missions in the full game.

Have they said much on what to expect in the game's story mode? In terms of length, depth, variety. etc.

The ammo types are for the three weapons you carry. Your primary weapon (Revolver, rifles, etc) use normal ammo (grey), your special weapon (Shotgun, etc) uses special ammo (green), and your heavy weapon (LMG, Rocket Launcher) uses heavy ammo (purple).

Lol of course there'll be a lot more plot than they showed. You only witness a short lvl 4 story mission. The story will unfold throughout the journey to max level and the story will continue throughout DLC and Destiny 2 etc.

been wondering about this: how will this thing evolve?
Will there be a new Destiny game every (other) year or will this be continued by add-ons and DLC like WoW? did they already announce a Season pass or something like that?

Does anyone else think that Peter Dinklage could've used alternate direction for his lines in the game? He's an amazing talent but his lines come across as very flat (and not in a that's-what-I-expect-from-an-AI way).

well they do have at least 10 years of Destiny games/dlc/etc planned

Yes, you should read the last couple pages of this thread. We've literally just been discussing that.

Yeah, but it's hard to know how he was directed. It's possible that since he's an AI of sorts, he was told to speak in a fairly stuff/monotone way.

Maybe if it had a robot filter sound on its voice it would sound less "weird".

Anyways, after 6 hours playing the alpha I really like the game, I m just worried about the supposed level cap, 20 levels feel a bit short.

I wish they could improve a bit the framerate and the FOV though.

Agree about having a robot filter. I've also noticed some of the framerate issues you referenced.

I've seen a number of people complain about the FOV. Would you mind explaining what is meant by issues with field of view? It doesn't look any different than other games to me.

Random exploration in co-op is actually pretty fun. The art is fantastic so everywhere you turn it feels really hand designed, running across other players and/or fireteams is amusing, and Public Events where everyone in that session rushes to the scene is a great visual. I hope the rate of Public Events and player encounters are pushed a bit higher for the Beta and final game though.

The Strike mission is fun. If you're underleveled even a little or are unsure of the strategy it gets to feel a bit spongey, but it's not cheap. The Raids being bigger versions of this will be a huge mess.....in a good way.

Haven't tried PvP yet, but from the footage it seems a bit basic, and lacking in the dynamic highlight reel potential of Halo. Kill times are quick, and the heavy emphasis on ADS in the midst of a bunch of supers and extended jump abilities seems counterintuitive which puts me off (as it does in PvE). Like I said though, I haven't tried it myself and I might turn around on it like I have with the PvE stuff, but even if i don't, the exploration + co-op + loot can more than make up for it.

I'm not gonna say it's won me over all the way, I'd still like to see some large scale Scarab-esque encounters before I scream praise from the rooftops, but I get this game now, which is more than I could've said a few weeks ago. Bring on the beetah.

okay this is driving me crazy. At the town, it has that blue question mark on the left side of the screen saying things like "The tower gunsmith can equip you with better weapons."

Ok cool where is he!? I can't find anything here. And the map doesn't help at all.
If you stand in the balcony facing the traveler, turn 180 and he is in the far right of that plaza.

Just got am email from amazon with the alpha code, downloading now. I don't remember signing up for the alpha through bungie, anyway... Just happy I got it.

I still can't log into alpha.bungie.net, perhaps I have to install the game first?

Just spent a good amount of time killing anything I could see around me on the enemy's Pike speeder, I'm pretty sure my character was laughing maniacally to himself while he was doing it.

Maybe this isn't the place to raise this, but I feel this is one thing I feel they haven't really explained to us very well. How's this whole "10 year" thing going to work?

Are they going with a Guild Wars 2 model? Are they selling DLC often? How do microtransactions fit in? Are there going to be games every year, every few years? Will every game be connected so characters are ported? I feel like I've got a lot of questions on that front after playing the Alpha.

There will be roughly three games. Each with a large expansion released about year after each games launch.

I'm not sure anyone mentioned this but from my personal experience, there is a major visual latency, very evident in PvP. Everyone is cherry.

If you watch one of the E3 trailers they put out, not the 7 minute one with Jason Jones, you'll hear that they do put some kind of filter on his voice. It really does make it sound somewhat decent, although I dunno if any filter can make his "oh no, it's the hive" line sound any better, especially since I've heard it already.

Just to be clear, there are only 3 available level types available in the alpha? After the spider tank mission that's it? :( how are people getting up to level 8? Replays?

Derp. Never watched the Wire. Now I need to.

You should! Awesome show. I loved Fringe too, though. Stopped mid-season 3 so I need to finish.

Replay the missions.

I don't know how I feel about Destiny. I was having a ton of fun and then we ran into few boss encounters that just ruined my enjoyment. Ammo was impossible to find in some instances. During the spider tank (devil something) boss fight we had to rotate deaths so we could all get ammo. And the fight went on FOREVER. 20 deaths per person later we had finished it... Some other encounters were also aggravating due to enemies spawning right on top of you all of the time. The ai spawning is just horribly done. Really killed the game for me tonight.

Also tried a few mp matches. Unbalanced as shit because everyone is using their acquired gear. Half the gun types aren't even competitive either. Everyone just ran around with shotguns. It was a complete total mess... Expected way way way more from Bungie... These guys made Halo?

I'm really confused if I want to purchase it at release now. After tonight the only positive is how well the UI has been done. Probably won't unless friends guilt me into it. All I have to say is thank god for Halo2 Anniversary.

And thanks to Ploxy for hooking my friend up with a code. Appreciate it!

Go to the bounty guy(The one near the mail guy), grab the PVE badge things from him, complete them. It's how I did it relatively quick.

Am I the only one who feels drop rates of new weapons is bad? I'm almost lvl 7 and still running around with my weapons u get from those tutorials.

I think Titanfall has ruined PVP in other shooters for me. Every time my character double jumps but doesnt clear the ledge I get pissed off that he doesnt reach out and pull himself up. What kind of person jumps towards a ledge and doesnt grab on?

I had almost all uncommon gear before I hit level 8. Unlucky I guess. I killed a lot of stuff by the plane junkyard though, waiting on the public events.
