Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I love watching reactions to this game change. Up until E3 there were a ton of people calling the game boring but this thread has been overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic, especially for an alpha test. The final game is going to be huge.

I was rough the same as Bruce, though Crucible wasn't the one that caught me ( mainly cause I suck at PvP ), but the game's 'boringness' really opens up the more you play through it. It really feels like there's an invisible hand ( of the king ) guiding your gameplay experience from moment-to-moment to make it better.

From the easy collection of items from Fallen/Hive enemies to suddenly going into an area with constant drop ships and wide area to basically fight around, to suddeny being guided into a tighter space with bullet sponge Hallowed Knights, to entering a horde mode public event... and then to another public event that pits you against a tough random boss...

Sure, it's all just combat, but the game really knows how to make the combat experience feel diverse. Triple that if you play with friends or even randoms.

And the irony is that I still feel like Destiny barely scratches the surface of what's possible for a game of this ambition. ( Even if the game wasn't this fun, I was willing to give it a pass because I think Destiny as a game has an insane amount of foundation to be leaps and bounds better by the 2nd title )

If future installments could make the exploration areas more immersive with NPCs in exploration spaces, bonfire-type areas where many players could sit down together in an open semi-combat area ( and allows every player to go voice-chat without needing to be in a fire-team ), increase diversity, more event types, more vehicles, and the ability to possibly just fly off in your spaceship seamlessly...

You're wrong. That's all I'll say.

There have been alphas that couldn't load textures correctly for comparison. I'm not saying the game won't improve, but with a few months left most devs would have had the game in closed beta about two months ago.

Just got myself a code. Downloading now, I can't wait.

Does anyone know how to get vanguard marks? I'm trying to complete bounties and all I see is rewards of increasing your vanguard reputation, not marks.

I'm not sure how the Vanguard stuff works yet, boy do you get awesome gear with it though in the full game. Teasing us with all the high level loot we can never have in Alpha.

Edit: Oh and hello there Yaser Tech! it's Assassio :D

Do you happen to know how old this Alpha build is? Or how recent the beta build is?

Take that into consideration..

Eh...It's not as if this alpha was only finished this week...

This alpha has been circulating behind closed doors between dev family and friends for a while now.

Just sank 3 hours into the alpha and I'm pleased that I had pre-order this game. Initially was a little boring but once I tried the strike mission woah, it's so much fun. A little odd that it's 3 player co-op instead of 4 player though.

The world in this game is amazing, was blown away at the environment and music. And the town reminds me of a MMORPG, where you can store your items, buy weapons/armors and even buy space ships too. I'm loving this game already.

I tried the online versus multiplayer too, and it's really really good. Reminds me of Halo 3's online multiplayer, had a hell lot of fun!

So which class are you guys rolling in the final game and why? Think Ill go warlock. Love how the ultimate looks.

I've yet to try the Titan but Hunter is my favorite thus far so I'll go with that in retail.

Now I'd like to ask which race do you prefer guys? I'm Exo.

You're just assuming. Stop it, please.

If you'd have bothered to explore enough you'd find where thing there are odd bugs and stuff. Also there is a reason they choose the areas they do. It's because they're more ready for public consumption. Even then if you notice raids are not in the alpha, other features aren't in the alpha. That's because those are still being worked on. Public releases tend to be more so that they can get feedback on features they display in them anyway. Also so that they can catch bugs they wouldn't find in a static test environment. They also make good stress tests for their servers and their server code. but to say oh this is what it's going to be when it releases is a very very stupid thing to say.

Also notice you said they'd have it in closed beta by now. Key point being closed. Closed means that you as a public member would never know about these. You'd be amazed at what they have going on behind the scenes that you never know about. They're usually a few builds ahead of anything they display publicly.

Out of curiosity, any Aussies in the Alpha? Hows the latency?

On a slightly different note, has there been any discussion about regional dedicated servers? I don't think I could play this on 230+ MS.
Victorian here, on iinet. Perfect latency for PVE and nearly flawless PVP. Shadow Fall is a disgrace in comparison to this. Amazing tech, regardless of anyone's opinions on the game. I expected it to be virtually unplayable down under, but it works basically flawlessly for me.

Just hit level 8 and got a pretty decent rifle. That instance with the spider tank is actually manageable now, but I think they need to tone down the HP of that tank by about ten minutes or so.

Kinda bummed that my armor, ship and weapons won't carry over, but man am I excited for the retail release.

I'll probably go with the setup I am running in past builds I played. Human Warlock, Exo Titan, and Awoken Hunter.

I just love playing all 3 so much that I have to have one of each. My warlock shall be my main though. I find it the funnest. Also what can I say I have a thing for Warlocks. Long standing Warlock in WOW. lol

Maybe I haven't gotten far into yet but I'm not feeling this game. Feels like someone made a borderlands mod out of a halo game. Graphics are eh and great at the same time. Great for art style, eh after playing other shooters and seeing that next gen push.

Gameplay is rather boring so far, borderlands felt much more exciting.

Most of my gripes (which I didnt list them all) will be fixed by launch I'm sure. Had more fun in battlefield hardline to be honest though...

Good Gosh the sniper rifle and charged shotgun special weapon combo is so satisfying. If there was a quickswap between the specials it would just be godlike.

That would make it an RPG.

MMO is Massively Multiplayer Online you arent exploring with hundreds of people around you at all.

Its CO-OP at best and they should feel bad for marketing it any other way.
Well, they are definetly not marketing it as an MMO. I fact, Bungie has been very clear about that ever since the reveal, as they have specifically said "Destiny is not an MMO" several times. If I'm not mistaken, Shared-World Shooter is the term they use to describe Destiny.

i'm pretty impressed by this, but it does still have that MMO feeling, its somehow lacking in the weight normal games have, and its hard to pinpoint how exactly. i think partly its the movement, which feels quite floaty and like you are more of a floating avatar than an actual character moving around, but also how enemies react (or don't react) to you shooting them.

its still fantastic but theres just this feeling to it that reminds me of warframe except it has a much bigger scope and its not terrible.

I must be doing something wrong, because the game is boring as crap. Crucible is fun (though it needs more players/smaller maps). The singleplayer has just been me running around after beacons and then running across the entire fucking map to do 1 small thing and rinse repeat.

It's even worse when you have to constantly run through those corridors that link the two/three areas of Old Russia together. Is there any story? :l

There's only one story mission. And btw, those beacon missions are just fetch quests and nothing more.

The mission you got dropped into when you started was the only story mission in the alpha. You're just doing free roam stuff. Once you hit level 6 grab a couple others and run the strike. It's awesome.
