Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I wonder what is in the section of the tower (upper left part of the map) we can't access.

There is also an area above the Hall of Guardians walled off by tapestries. Looking through you can see there is more room, which probably leads to the Traveler's Walk on the map.

I know this is just an alpha, but I can't help but feel disappointed. All the enemies basically feel the same. I was expecting a Borderlands with better graphics, but really it's painfully average. The capture the flag map I played on was kinda bad too.
The worst thing is Ghosts voice. They should either go for emotionless AI or buddy guy, not both.
"Well, I'm up for it if you are."

This is pretty fun. I have never been much a fan of Halo's visual design, but this looks pretty nice, albeit somewhat unoriginal.
Quick question:
Will the characters from the alpha be usable in the beta?
And characters from alpha/beta in the main game?

The characters you make and the items/gear you collect in the alpha do not carry over to the beta/retail release.

When Bungie first mentioned "the last safe city on earth", was anyone else expecting more of a.... you know, a city?

Obviously I know it's an alpha and there are places blocked off. I just hope they managed to put the actual city part in the game, which I'm assuming is "Chicago". Bungie always ends up cutting their best ideas, but I suppose this is a priority since it's the hook.

I doubt we'll see the city, just the tower. Chicago is not the city they are referring to when they say "the last city". Chicago is a swamp afaik.

Will there be an ingame map for all of the other areas besides the tower? Sometimes navigating feels kind of difficult without it.

Will space tears of sadness if that's true. More than anything, I was looking forward to a exploring a giant city on the scale of Old Russia, with "The Tower" being a place within it.

Things I started knowing after a couple play throughs

In the story missions or strike missions you can wander off in an explore like fashion and I think it's interesting how many nooks there are in the explore map. I keep finding areas that im sure are other story or strike missions that are closed off. It's more a one large map with no loading which is really impressive. And it's just the story or strike components loads instead of the beacon missions.

Movement feels more like a Halo game, not as much loot drops, but the wandering around a large map and engaging mobs feels like Borderlands to me.

Damn. I really like loot and it every time they showed or talked about the game, it seemed like there wasn't much loot. Hopefully it's just the part of the alpha that doesn't have a lot.

Hows PvP play?

I think the area below the tower when you look down is that city. Doubt we'll get to go there though.

Hows PvP play?

To me, PvP is godlike. I'm in love. It does have some balancing issues, but I think Bungie can work them out by launch.

Tight shooting, great netcode, and nice hit detection. Wish you could turn aim assist off though, and the tight FoV has led to some close ranged confusion.

I came for the PvE, but stayed for the PvP.

Jumped into pvp for the first time today.
After sucking hard for the first couple of games, I'm starting to get into the flow a little.
Holy crap is this frantic once it gets really going.
Feels a little like Q3A to me, which certainly is always a good thing.

There seems to be quite a bit of technique to it as well when it comes to how to counter certain powerful things with something else.
Pleasantly surprised here. :)

I really don't get why people are saying he's bad, I love love love that it's his voice and think he does a great job. Are people expecting a claptrap with jokes and what not? I dunno.

I'd say it's the dialog more than it is the voice. He sounds better in-game than he did in any of the videos, but some of those earlier lines...

Each time I play the Alpha and roam around I get to places I never went before. I was thinking of making another character but now I might just hold off and wait until the beta to make a hunter. I was already going to get this when it came out and was hyped up for it but the alpha has basically made me impatient until the full game is released.

Ok finally got some 30 min in...so far so good....enemies coming out of nowhere...missions plentiful...also characters have cool gestures/dances...also im loving the powers...Im having fun overall...

cons?? I guess the lighting and weird framerate...

Is it competitive and is there any sort of ranking in it?

I concur.

I don't know who Peter Dinklage is, but I feel he does a good job as a narrator/sidekick type character. I am not interested in having him crack jokes or play some chair capture.

I agree with Gaz for the most part, though I enjoy the PVE more. I think vehicles need tweaking. They are very powerful with few counters. And shotguns feel overpowered to the point where I feel I need to have one equipped so I have a chance to counter enemies with shotguns. Also, the MP announcer is nowhere as good as the Halo one. Hopefully Bungie addresses these issues.

I think his voice is fine but they have his voice booming at you instead of it sounding like it's coming from your little drone box thingy.

It's ironic. People say it sounds like Dinklage "phoned it in", but if he actually did literally phone it in and they recorded it from the phone call, it would sound like it fits better.

OK, first 'welcome to next gen' moment for me right here. I wandered right over through the wall at the very east of the rocketyards. I wasn't expecting what I found - it bought back full on Fallout 3 flashbacks on steroids and I found the area with the cars Dax01 mentioned way back in the thread. Thanks to video capture I can put it up on youtube, but I don't want to spoil this area if you've not found it yet.

Is there a specific place to go on Bungie's site to leave feedback? There not being an in game option to mute the camera mic in chat feels like a big oversight, but an easy mistake to make since it's so platform specific.

Is it possible to replay the first mission?
I loved the darkness and the music in a very specific part... If you played you know the one.

Yes, you can select it while you are in orbit. If you replay it on Legendary difficulty you will encounter one new monster type [exploding zombies].

Can i ask you guys who tried it already something. I have my doubt about that game for one single reason. This game look like a clone of Borderlands 2, but without the humor and cel-shading environment, but with better last gen visual. Am i right?

So I've put in roughly 12 hours since the alpha started, so addictive. I've done everything the game has to offer, so tomorrow I'll just stick with doing the strike again and some PVP.

Well there certainly seems to be a sprawling city below the Tower but who knows if you'll ever get a chance to explore it

Its too late for PS4 Alpha. Signups are closed and servers are shutting down tomorrow. You can start playing larger Beta on 17th July [few week long test] on PS3/PS4 if you preorder the game.

FUCK! Are you kidding me?!

I JUST got a code. And now Sony's Network is undergoing maintenance. Shit, man...

have bungie said anything about large scale raids ? can you imagine 5-8 man teams taking on some massive boss. :D

One shard can host 16 players, that's also the max ammount of people that can join public event.

Alpha testing was announced as 4 day test. Maybe they will extend it by little, but I doubt it.

Bah, servers undergoing maintenance. Ah well.

Sooooo... since the game ends tomorrow, we should totally try to break the hell out of it in every way that it can be broken. That would be best.

You are not.

The game takes some cues from Borderlands in it's loot and FPS/RPG hybridization, but it'd be pretty shallow to call it a clone of anything. It's no doubt influenced by many other games, but Destiny is it's own game.

If not this game then one of the sequels, probably.

Yeah, when it isn't held back by last gen consoles.

You play the game like an E3 reveal
