Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

Twitter decided to resize it, but here's my progress on mapping alternative colors revealed at E3 so far. Still missing a lot, so many people decided to play with just traditional colors in demos.

I cropped out Orange Mac for an avatar, hope you don't mind :)

Fantastic work.

The reduced leg after throwing an opponent is likely to avoid situations where the thrown player has no control and can just be further attacked without chances of defense. That lack of control is something desired by the competitive communities in general (which was what led to combos being popular in fighting games in general in the first place, after being basically just accidental in SF2), but it's not something desirable by casual players, who quickly get frustrated in situations like that. That's one thing I really don't think they'll touch.

Aerial landing lag though seems more like something Sakurai implemented to make the game be played "correctly" from his point of view. Land attacks for land battle, discouraging short hops + attacks. I think there's a chance he could fix that, considering how it's not really something that bothers most players, competitive or not, but it depends on how much he values his game design plan compared to the impressions that he's receiving, and if the negative reactions to it really go beyond the tournament base.

It could actually have a strong effect though thanks to online play. People won't be playing just within their groups any longer, and, if there are many advanced techniques that lead to an obviously superior playstyle, that could be easily visible online, leading to a frustrating experience, even if the players using those techniques aren't actually that great. That happens in online fighting games all the time.

Sry but competitive players who practice are always going to dump on casual players (even with items, all stages, timed, etc). And they will always find the superior playstyle. Its likely to be a camping style similar to Brawl because of the lag and how punishing going on the offensive is. You will literally never solve that problem (without matchmaking rankings). Also how often do you think a person is gonna encounter someone really good? Probably not often enough to ruin the experience. There are far bigger things to worry about when it comes to online.

Anyone else see the Maximillian Dood channel vid where Matt showed up and tried to act like he knew what the hell he was talking about in Smash? Facepalmed so hard it left a mark listening to him there...wish the channel would stop letting him speak.

Do you guys think characters will only have 4 colors/costumes to choose from, or do you think there will be more? I'm hoping for 6 because Wii Fit Trainer only has 2 colors as it is. I want the My Routine orange color.

Also, do you think characters will only have one victory animation? I kinda hope not because I'll miss Donkey Kong's chest pound and Fox's "mission complete" animation.

Link please. I'm curious to see what Max had to say about Smash Bros.

Good work so far.
The lack of colour picking is so weird to the point of abnormal. Every time I play I flick through the colours. I mean why wouldn't you?

I'd be really surprised if there were only two. I'm thinking both of these were just due to it being a demo.

There will definitely be more colors. They didn't want to spoil everything for the demo. As for victory animations, I'm only expecting one each, unfortunately. The new freeze frame/zoom aesthetic wouldn't work with a lot of the old ones.

Didn't like how it felt. Due to the short amount of time I had to tap up for because X and Y felt weird..

Glad the GC controller is returning as an option. I'm sure I could get better with the Pro but it's not something I'll try to do till later. Till then it's GC all the way.

To be clear you're talking about the WiiU Pro controller or the Pro controller for the original Wii?

The Smash fanbase is the only place I see "competitive" and "casual" play being treated as mutually exclusive, as if any move to cater to one instantly means depriving the other of something. It's really weird.

Link please. I'm curious to see what Max had to say about Smash Bros.

He didn't...Matt from Yo Videogames talked the whole time and it sounds to me like he got bodied in a time match and now thinks its the game's fault. Folks are putting him on blast hard...given his Project M play he really shouldn't be trying to act like an expert on this shit. He starts talking about the size of the balancing team working on Smash and acting like he knows whats best. Guy is clueless IMO.

Here's the link.

Its pretty messed up.

Honestly, this guy just brings Maximillian's channel down IMO. He is constantly complaining and Max has to awkwardly sort of give "look on the brighter side" to all his ramblings when he starts up. He pretty much acted like a douchey 14 year old sleaze the whole time they played CVS2 goin' on about boobs anytime a girl was selectable. Hell acts like that all the time and thinks its funny. Thing is he really comes across as a know it all desktop developer 14 year old mindset kind of guy so its not really funny when he does it...just irritating.

But hey, he can keep playing up that "please understand" Iwata impression awhile longer and get by I guess. Better than when he acts like himself.

The main thing I disagree with is what he was saying about Sakurai. It's pretty clear Sakurai is designing this game with competitive players at least partly in mind. I mean he separated all of the transforming characters and got rid of such a unique/brilliant concept as Pokemon Trainer purely for the competitive community. He got rid of some random elements that PM didn't even get rid of like Dedede's side special. And he overall added a lot of small touches.

Smash is the only game of its kind
if you ignore that PSAS exists
There are a lot of ways to play and people are really serious about their way.

What do you mean?

That I found it weird that these people finally had access to the game and so many didn't take the chance to flick through all the possible colours. I know that would be the first thing I'd do. Or did I come across as saying that about you? If so I apologise, I was trying to respond to the second part of your post.

I've been looking for all the alt costumes for a while, it's a shame more haven't been posted.

the fact yellow/blue luigi is being repped from that old Japanese cartoon is wonderful

Played some Smash at Best Buy. Simply put, I could do a lot of classic Melee Kirby air to ground combos. Which is to say Kirby's back and d-air cancel Melee l-cancel fast in Smash 4. Strangely the fence of pain looked like it was just slow enough where I couldn't combo.

So d-air into the ground up-tilt worked.
Bdair into grab/tilt/smash worked.

I'm hoping for Orange too. Like I said that, I have a feeling that we might get 8 colors but I could be wrong.

he posted a little bit ago his opinions have been mixed and pretty negative of the 3ds version or at least that's what I get for

I was hoping that he would elaborate more.

I agreed. I have that feeling that we are getting one victory pose per character this time due to freeze frame-zoom.

So, how do you think they'll handle special move customization for some characters, i.e. Megaman and Samus? They both have different weapon types, so I'd imagine the "variations" Sakurai mentioned could take the form of different weapons subbing in for Megaman (i.e. maybe Screw Crusher or another multi-directional weapon subbing in for Metal Blade, or another shield-type power subbing in for Leaf-Shield) and different Beam Types and Missiles and Bombs subbing in for Samus (i.e. maybe a Power Bomb with a bigger radius and knockback than the regular type, but it takes longer to go off and longer to lay another one, and slower but more powerful Ice Missiles subbing for regular and Super Missiles, maybe something similar to Diffusion Missiles from Metroid Fusion).

I think it'd be pretty academic to switch out Mega Man's moves with similar items. There are at least five or six different "shields" like the Leaf Shield. Skull Barrier, Star Shield, Jewel Shield... I figure they'll probably swap out two of them and give them slightly different properties. Same with Crash Bomb - no shortage of "bombs." Probably some that don't stick but are more powerful? Metal Blade is a bit trickier but it's all usable.

Rush Coil is the only one that I'm not sure can really be replaced... maybe use the other Rush stuff? But I think that'd be significantly more work to create assets for compared to the other attacks.

Has DaBoss posted a GIF analysis of Mii Fighters, Palutena and/or Pac-Man yet?

Always love his work on those following each new reveal. :-)

He got rid of PT for the comp community? Or was it cause he needed to cut people and they eliminated transformation characters? I dunno.

Both. He separated transformation characters for the competitive players and as a result of that he had to drop PT, Squirtle and Ivysaur to make room for other characters.

Eh. I don't think that explains the outright venomous attitudes on both sides. People should be mature enough to realize the way someone else chooses to play the game has little to no effect on you, and stop taking people criticizing the game as a person insult of some kind.

I guess that's pretty bad for his channel since I can see it being a huge turn off for many people.

Oh no I'm just really tired and shouldn't be up x_x I just realised there was nothing confusing about your post at all..

Yeah...honestly he just needs a competent co-star. His stuff with Mike Ross is golden. MVC2 Cheddah-gief was a riot to watch.

BTW anything new on Rhythm Heaven rumor? I know that some of its cast was supposedly spotted in the Smash Run vids so its looking pretty likely to get Rhythm Heaven stuff. Hope the flexin wrestlers are an attack.
