Who are your favorite black Nintendo characters?

Hmm? Perhaps just fanart I've seen? Because I was pretty sure I smiled extra much when I saw some art for it featuring a kid that could be taken as my little brothers daughter.

Have not seen any Splatoon characters that are of color, though I haven't been paying the most attention to the game.

But their games, first and foremost, are DESIGNED for a Japanese audience. One that has almost no minority population.

Those types of edits take time and money. And I would hope that most here are against outright censorship.

But if the game has a character creation screen, I agree, there is no reason not to add people of color.

Yepp against Censorship but Nintendo loves it. BTW still a shitty excuse.

May I ask why it was really funny?

cause it's funny when everyone is avoiding the obvious poor-taste joke but one guy goes for it. it's like when a terrible event happens and some guy puts benny hill music over news footage of said event.

If I really have to explain it to you, you are missing the point. But here goes.

Nintendo has real problems having black characters in their games. As many people have pointed out the majority of the ones they do have play off racist stereotypes "mammy", big lips, etc. I posted Yoshi and Game and Watch because they were honestly the only physically black characters I could think of, in a way to illustrate the lack of playable black characters in Nintendo games, not to insight trolls to make racist jokes or to post characters who are just the color black.

And if anyone honestly thinks I'm "concern trolling" feel free to discuss it with me. I'm not a troll, and my topics are typically locked because of other posters causing problems. Do I bring up controversial topics about representation in games? You betcha. Am I an openly bisexual poly practicing guy with a beard who licks controllers? You betcha. Do I own 3DS, Wii U and every Nintendo console released (other than virtual boy)? You betcha. I love Nintendo, I love video games, which is why I have to point out problematic trends and things in them, because it can only make them better.

It is refreshing to admit that something you like is in no way shape or form perfect while being able to still enjoy it, something it seems a lot of people online have a problem doing, they would rather cover their eyes and stick their fingers in their ears and pretend they don't hear any of the criticisms or believe the truths in them.

Their problem is their lack of western studios, blacks are nonexistant in japan, where the games are made .

so are italian plumbers...

the mascot of this company is a white dude (as are soooo many other nintendo characters) so i dont get the argument that it has something to do with japan being overwhelmingly japanese/ not ethnically diverse

there's actually a ton of black characters in Nintendo games is what I've learned in here. Not saying there isn't room for improvement but hey.

If I remember correctly, supposedly Mario was inspired by the landlord of Nintendo's American Warehouse, Mario Segale.

But Donkey Kong and crew have Caucasian skin, so it doesn't succeed honestly or as a joke.

What the fuck is caucasian skin?

caucasian =/= white

Funny? Seriously, what was remotely "funny" about it? That's like me saying "haha Jews like money!" with absolutely no creative or subversive spin on the stereotype. Regurgitating an old an extremely offensive stereotype is not humor. If that's humorous, you'd probably get a real kick out of clan meetings.

This argument might hold weight if the majority of Nintendo's character's were Japanese, but the only Japanese characters are Ash/Satoshi, a driver or two in F-Zero and Piston Honda from Punchout. All of the other main franchise characters are white or are animals.

Well they're also squid people, plus we haven't actually seen that much of the game yet. At least the other new IP had black characters

This is the second worst excuse.

nah, doesn't matter. They're not human just humanoid so let's keep them Caucasian.

And yes, S.T.E.A.M. SRpg with a fps view? I'm sceptic but interested. Very interested.

Holy fucking exaggeration, Batman!! I honestly love threads like these, brings out the crazy in some people.

This bullshit again, seriously?

They can use their imagination to create a myriad of fantasy worlds and creatures but it's hard to create black characters because they don't see many of them on the street on the way to work? :lol

I get it. So this is the negative image of that other thread on too many white males in games.

Let me ask you: How many black game developers are there in Japan? In the world?

In answer to your question, I think Wario is pretty dark.

I don't really get this. Other Japanese developers seem to include black characters in their games quite often. This is a Nintendo specific issue. Not a Japanese developer issue.

I don't think I've ever played a game produced by Nintendo that had a legitimate black character. So...I find it pretty hard to answer.

Really? I thought the Jynx post were worse. This whole thread has some disappointing joke post in it.

The OP itself is a joke. This is the same OP that made a bunch of hooplah over FarCry 4 where it later was revealed to not be a big deal.

It's almost like some of these posts are going out of the way to exclude characters *because* of the fact they're male and white.

Speaking of racism and Kirby games (I actually LOVE Kirby, makes me sad) Here is a screenshot from Kirby's Triple Deluxe on 3DS of a character with a rather risque name.
